My doctor has just prescribed topamax to me to help assist my mood stabilizer, assist with alcohol avoidance, and help stop my binge eating. I guess you can say that I am taking it for the trifecta of problems. I am really hoping that it can help with all of those things, but especially help with the weight I had gained while binge eating (70lbs). The one area of concern is the hair loss and the scatter brain feeling. How severe do those symptoms occur?

It's crazy how bad it is! And the worst is... I go and read the side effects of my mood stabilizer and that too has confusion on as a side effect!!!! So I'm stuffed basically.
Topamax helps soooo much for the binge eating and its like you can just control yourself you know. I really dig that big! But is it worth it?:-/ the weightloss loving bit in me says hell yes, but I hate this stupid confused feeling especially after knowing that its not me. But now, stop this, then I'll need something else for crying. 😳 What to doooo!!

I am going to start Topamax 25 tonight i am taking it for weight loss, i am having a tummy tuck in June and have 30 lbs to lose before the Dr will do it, i am very excited to lose the weight, does any one know how fast the weight will come off
I was put on 50mg of topamax per night for extreme migraines after my neurologist took pity on me (god bless him)and saw that I desperately wanted to lose my baby weight that I had been carrying around for 2 1/2 years! Anyway, I noticed a change within 3 weeks or so my face and neck was much thinner and I had lost about 14 pounds in a month and within 7 months I lost 55 pounds!!! Food just didn't taste as GREAT as I remembered it to be and nothing tasted as good as being thin. I did have major tingle sensation in my feet and dry mouth all the time. Make sure u commit to taking your prescription exactly as prescribed if u keep missing doses the weight loss is only going to be delayed. Ps- my migraines came back and I'm currently on 100mgs that occurred about 60% thru my weight loss goal. I think the increase in dose really helped me lose such high numbers because I just lost complete interest in all junk food, I only ate when my body was suppose to. Hope my story helps! Good luck on your weight loss journey!!!! <3

hmmm. I just started taking topamax (25) and now I can't sleep. Is it possible that it is giving me a shot of energy versus drowsiness? seems to be going against the grain. It is the only thing that has changed in my regime.

I would have it checked out. One of the side effects does have to do with the eyes. The following is from their website:

http://www.topamax.com/how-topamax-may-help--...

TOPAMAX® may cause eye problems. Serious eye problems include: sudden decrease in vision with or without eye pain and redness; blockage of fluid in the eye causing increased pressure in the eye (secondary angle closure glaucoma). These eye problems can lead to permanent loss of vision if not treated. You should call your healthcare professional right away if you have any new eye symptoms.

I was supposed to start on Topamax today for the treatment of migrains. After further research and seeing all the nasty side effects, I opted out. Lucky for me, my migrains are mild to moderate with a frequency of about three to four a month and usually resolved with Excedrin.

I've been on and off topamax for about five years, for mood and to counteract weight gain from other meds. The first time I took it I lost about thirty lbs. Since then in only two years I've gained sixty from seroquil. The next two times the dr. Put me back on topamax I lost nothing? Does the weight loss stop after the first time?? As for memory, yes you lose it. My doctor said it makes you act "dumb" it also kills your night vision, and soda tastes horrible! But, it's worth it if I'd lose this seroquil weight!
I read the book "My Way Out" for alcohol abuse. It talked about the side effects of Topamax. She said for the cognitive symptoms, as your doctor if it's okay to take Adrafinil or Modafinil. You can get it in drug and health food stores, supposedly. I haven't tried Topamax yet, but I'm going to go ahead and get some Adrafinil or Modafinil just in case I have those memory problems.

Hey there, I'm fourteen and I was started on topamax two days ago for eating disordered thinking. This stuff is actually working already! I'm feeling better and I'm comfortable eating food which I haven't been comfortable doing since I was about eight. This is the best thing that's ever happened to me!:o)

I take topamax for PTSD and bipolar and migraines. I have had great success with being able to fall asleep and pretty much stay asleep. I have lost weight on it which is also a plus. Just don't loose sight of the real reasons we are asking this medicine. Because the side effects are very real. I hope this helps someone out there.

I just saw your post as I was wondering around here today. First timer. Is there really help for the memory issues. I supposed to take 300 Mg a day of Topamax but my memory is all over the place. I forget what I do all the time. I have post it notes every where. My legs tingle all the time. My face is okay. But I have a limp now too. When I go to my Neuro he tells me it is normal??

I am taking topamax for headaches and have been on it for 6 weeks. I do not work out and I am overweight for my height. I started off at 209 and went for my follow up appointment and now weight 200lbs 6 weeks later. I force myself to eat something because if I wanted to I could go without eating whereas before I was on topamax I could eat snack all day as much as I wanted. So now since I don't really crave anything I force myself to eat healthy things and it seems to be working! Don't go without eating or you will gain the weight all back. I have not worked out once!
