I have had epilepsy since I was 11 and was switched from my old medication to Topamax when I was 17, within about 4 months I lost 60 lbs, I went from being an unconfindent overweight (190lb) highschool graduate to this new college student weighing 125 lbs by taking my medicine. It was like night to day. I felt AMAZING i cant even explain how good i felt, sitting here typing this makes me want to cry. I starting working out, eating more healthy (keeping in mind that I was a very active healthy person before, running track all 4 year of high school, and playing water polo, and a competetive hore back rider, I'd been over weight my whole life with no explanation as to why) and all of a sudden I was skinny and felt like I had the body I'd always desereved. I got attention from everybody everwhere i went. people i graduated with i ran into a few years later didnt believe me it was from my topamax. "she must be doing drugs, or she must be throwing it up" but I didn't care, i felt great and that's all i cared about. my back pain went away that i'd had from being over weight and I had that go getter attitude. I ended up meeting my boyfriend whom i've been with for almost 5 years now amd I've never been happier. I within the last year or so went back to the doctor and was tested for epilepsy and have since grown out of it, i had what was called "childhood epilespy" so my neurologist took me off Topamax, i was worried that i would gain all my weight back so of course i asked him, his response was, you might gain about 5 lbs back but i wouldn't be worried. Within 6 months to a year I've gained all 60 if not more of that weight back putting me right back where i used to be, miserable, overweight and in pain. I went to visit my regular doctor to ask her if this was normal and she almost exact word for word response was "i can't do anything about you being over weight and if that makes you depressed then you should see a phsychiatrist"
i went back immediatly to working out, dieting, meal portioning, nothing helps. I mean NOTHING. I've done the V shakes, diet pills, gym routines, not eating at all. and every doctor i talk to cant seem to give me any explanation.
I've recently started taking my topamax again to see if that helps, but i desperatly want to have kids soon, and doctors reccomend not taking topamax while preganant.
This is a great medicine but does have some tricky side effects, short term memory loss: i noticed myself repeating myself several times throughout the day. Tingling in my hands and feet, and obviously side effects in your babies.
But it did cure all head aches, and weight loss.
You gotta pick your battles.
I would highly reccomend topamax, coming from a depressed, once skinny, ugly duckling.

I have just recently started taking Topomax and was put on it as a mood stabalizer. I also would love to lose weight by taking it. Im starting off on a very low dose...25mg n a.m and 25 mg at bed time. I have found that the 25 mg in the a.m makes me sleepy...even being a baby dose. But my question is, can, or is it possible for me to lose weight being on this low dose or do I need to be on a much higher dose before that will happen???
Kelly, It depends on everyone's body type, but you probably will not notice weight loss until you are at a higher dosage. They start you off at the small dosage because if you start off at a high dosage, too much too fast can cause memory loss. I also started off at 25 then went to 50 and 75, then 100 which I'm on now and noticed weight loss after about 3 months.

Haven't asked the dr to reduce the dose because I'm fearful my migraines will return. Not willing to risk it. They were so bad that I was hugging my toilet every morning and I couldn't function. I had to rearrange my work schedule to only work night shifts because I was useless during the day. I've lost 20 lbs since October but my quality of life is more important to me than my weight. I'm 5'2" and 113 right now. I think I'm alright for now.
there's a topamax.com it has info there. it all depends on the person really. i've been on topamax since May and have had the tingling the entire time. My dosage has gone from 50mg to 100mg, and the tingling has gotten worse, but everyone is different. My doctor warned me of it when i started the medicine so i wasn't worried when i started tingling. it's normal. Just like everyone's aversion to soda, carbonation is horrible. i've found that if you make the soda flat so it's not bubbly anymore it usually helps me. i dunno if it'd help anyone else.

howlong did it take for anyone of you to see any weight loss after starting to take topamax i have been on it for migrains for 2 weeks and have not noticed anything i have actually started eating more it's like i cant stop.
I was on Topamax a couple of years ago. I think the wieght loss was slowly but maybe after a month I did notice a change. I was able to eat what I wanted but at the same time was careful not to indulge. I was close to 150 lbs when I started and maintained my wieght at 120 after being on it for awhile although I did go down as low as 116. I was too thin at that point people would comment, I think because I'm only 5'4 and it did not fit my height.

Started Topamax a week ago on 25mg, after crying non stop ... I am on 25mg twice a day now, and I have the prescription for 2 months after which I'm seeing my psych again. Have Bipolar 2 and I'm on 3 other meds - all weight neutral. I am overweight and really struggling to lose weight, so I was THRILLED to see that a side effect of this is to lose weight. Right now my head feels fuzzy and I'm a little nauseous, but I read that this will blow over? Has anyone else lost weight on a dose this low or does it need to be increased?
For those who have fatigue...I drink Wellbutrin 300mg that's for depression, not a SSRI, which is good and it helps for energy and that, so its a good energy booster!

I started taking 25mg Topamax 2x a day. My doctor put me on it for metabolism. I'm also taking Phentermine with it as well.(doctor prescribed). I have had some problems losing weight and so far it seems to be doing good. I'm not losing fast which I'm not complaining. I would rather lose it slowly and healthy, but has anyone had problems with dry mouth? I drink a lot of water never really was a big soda drinker to begin with.

I've only been on topamax 200mg x1daily for about a week.for weight loss. I was recently diagnosed as bipolar and PTSD. So far this is miserable , I'm not sure if I got the flu or if its the meds. If I force myself out of bed and go to the gym I feel good but them I come home and take a 3 hour nap , my bones aches , I have the shakes and the fatigue is ridiculous. I don't know what to do ! UGH any suggestions ?
Hi Chrissy,
How's it going? Are you still on the Topamax? Are you drinking anything else with it? I started off on 25mgs a day and then 25mgs twice a day and took the second dose at 3pm and that made me tired, so taking it at 8 now... Why are you on such a high dose immediately? I'm also on it for bipolar. Are you 1 or 2?
I take Wellbutrin - which also helps for fatigue... It's for depression, and it's an energy booster.

On day 3 of Topamax for migraines. I get nauseated when I take them. On top of that, the bridge of my nose tingles really badly. I also have a difficult time stringing words together. Any idea how long these symptoms take to resolve?? I also haven't seen relief from the migraines yet so I'm not convinced these are for me...

Hi CeeCee,
My nausea went away after a week... I don't really have the tingles. What dose are you on? My word stringing is also a lil messed up LOL. Try sticking it out a little longer to see if the migraines go away - you wont necessarily see after only 3 days. I've read up A LOT and 99% of people have success on it for migraines! All the best!

I started 25mg per day 1 week ago and I've lost 8 lbs already. I agree with the post above that this may not be "healthy" weight loss, but bieng overweight isn't healthy either. If this gets me to a healthy weight, then so be it. So far so good!!

How much water are you drinking? I've been on 25mg twice daily for about 2 - 3 weeks now and I've lost 2kgs already. I drink 3liters of water and eat healthy. Everything is starting to taste like fricking soap though.... lol.

Started taking 25 Mgs of Topamax at night 3 days ago. Phentermine in the morning for weight loss. Laying in bed last night felt like my face was tingling. Accidentally took 50 mgs of Topamax this morning instead of the Phentermine. Noontime here at work my whole head tingles in rushes...like the ocean...comes and goes in waves. Will get the the doses corrected. If all fails, read the directions. It is better to look good...than to feel good! Seriously...if it keeps it up. I will quit the stuff and tell the doctor and the pharmacist.( I told the Pharmacist had concerns about the side effects, but she pooh poohed them...)

I have taken this drug before and due too high of a dosage, I experienced cognitive issues. I was taking 150mg for several months with no problems. Then I started to notice drastic effect on my memory, concentration, even the way I walked and talked. At first I thought Traumatic encephalopathy. I have had a skull fracture and many concussions. I even had an MRI of my skull. Evidently the drug builds up in your system because as I said...several months no problem.

I should also mention that when I stopped all returned to normal. I am starting a much lower dose hoping to get weight loss benefit without the cognitive impairment. I am bipolar and allergic to lithium. So I am on a constantly changing drug regimen. I feel like a lab rat

Both my daughter and I were on Topamax for eight years for migraines. Never lost a lb with it but it did stop our migraines. Then I started developing very large and painful kidney stones. Six bought a of kidneys stones so large they had to be surgically removed. One time I became septic and almost died. Read about Topamax and kidney stones. Went off the Topamax and no more kidney stones. So I took my daughter off of it also. Now her migraines are back but at least I know we won't be plagued by horribly painful kidney stones.

Did you drink a lot of water when you were on Topamax? Because one of the things you should do to prevent kidney stones ive read ... is drink heaps of water.
