I have been taking 100mg topiramate for migraines (not weight loss)since July 2012, and am just strating to wean off it under doctor's orders. In mid Nov 2012, I had pain between shoulders, felt like lead in my shoes, and burning in my arms whenever was just a little active. Doctors thought I was having heart trouble - blood work and heart tests all negative. Now in January I am short of breath and even weaker. Just stumbled on info that Topiramate can cause muscle weakness. Question - what is the prognosis for recovery? If good, how long will it take?

You are on a really high doses. I take 50 mg per day. Rarely receive more numbness and tingling. Have you asked your Dr. to reduce the dose

Since: Jan 13

Haven't asked the dr to reduce the dose because I'm fearful my migraines will return. Not willing to risk it. They were so bad that I was hugging my toilet every morning and I couldn't function. I had to rearrange my work schedule to only work night shifts because I was useless during the day. I've lost 20 lbs since October but my quality of life is more important to me than my weight. I'm 5'2" and 113 right now. I think I'm alright for now.

I have been taking 300mg of topamax for over 6 years the thing about the weight loss is you never feel hungry and that is NOT GOOD. I have to remember to eat or I get very sick. I take to topamax for servere migraines, I have them do bad that I end up spending weeks at a time in the hospital. I know this med very well and I would not never use it for weight loss.
I agree. I have to remember to eat as well. I keep reading entries on here and most of them seem to be geared towards the weight loss side effects of this drug. People don't understand the other side effects that come with taking Topamax. It's not meant to be taken as a diet pill!!

That's not true for me... I am on 25mg twice a day and I've been on that for 4 months and have lost 33 lbs without diet or exercise... I just have no appetite and after a few bites I feel stuffed!
Rich's statement is absolutely NOT true. Dosages and results are different for everyone. Putting this on here Rich is irresponsible and could cause someone to go against their doctor's order's and adjust their dosage just to lose weight. In my case, on 100 mg/ day and have lost 20 lbs since October.

I've only been on topamax 200mg x1daily for about a week.for weight loss. I was recently diagnosed as bipolar and PTSD. So far this is miserable , I'm not sure if I got the flu or if its the meds. If I force myself out of bed and go to the gym I feel good but them I come home and take a 3 hour nap , my bones aches , I have the shakes and the fatigue is ridiculous. I don't know what to do ! UGH any suggestions ?

I have been searching on the internet about topamax. I have been going through a lot of pain in my legs and back, and my arms and wrist. I have been taken Mobic medicine for a while but it does not seem to be helping anymore. So I have been doing some research about the medicine and it stated that it helps with the pain, and migrains that I have been have quite often. So if you have any iformation that would help. Please do send it to me.

Chrissy, keep a close eye on your fatigue. In my case it turned into actual muscle wasting, so bad that I have trouble breathing (I am weaning off it now). If you think your muscles are getting weak talk to your doctor right away about stopping.

I have just recently started taking Topomax and was put on it as a mood stabalizer. I also would love to lose weight by taking it. Im starting off on a very low dose...25mg n a.m and 25 mg at bed time. I have found that the 25 mg in the a.m makes me sleepy...even being a baby dose. But my question is, can, or is it possible for me to lose weight being on this low dose or do I need to be on a much higher dose before that will happen???

Has anyone heard of taking Topamax for weight loss? I completed my treatments in May and am having trouble shedding a few "unwanted" pounds due to the chemo "throwing" me into menopause. My Oncologist suggested this med at 25mg at bedtime. Just wondering if anyone has had any results? Thanks.
I had the most severe side affects and tingling confusion like dementia and would never take it agai ! Plus for some reason was even hungrier than usual. Good luck

I took topamax for two months. I lost the equivalent of four pant sizes. It shut down all urges to eat. I was taking it for bipolar 1. I ended up having an extreme manic episode which ended me up in the hospital-or rather a mental health emergency room. I had never had a manic episode but experienced this after solely being on topamax, which happened suddenly and uncontrollably

Hate It - your side effects aren't uncommon. I had the tingling and confusion. They went away within a month. You're either able to wait it out or can't. How long were you on it?

Took Topomax 25mg couple of years ago for migraine. Didn't help the headaches, but lost weight. Food tasted terrible, didn't want to eat it, didn't want morning coffee (too bitter) didn't want glass of wine (too sour). This med is great if you want to lose weight, stop drinking, but if you need your wits about you, you better skip it.

I have taken Topamax for several years, i did not have any side effects except for weight loss. I took 100 mg in a.m.and 100mg at night. I could not drink soda pop, but drank alot of water. Lost a bunch of weight. That was nice. If you don't watch it. You can loose too much like me. I went off it and am about to go on it again. I have gained alot of weight, but my migraines are back and i have alot more bilatral nerve pain from the neck to my fingertips.

I just finished weaning off Topamax under Doctor's advice. I am still 10 lbs down (from 180 so that's a lot) and I am convinced its all muscle that I lost, since I am still as weak as a kitten.

But the tingling in my hands, feet and mouth is gone. And the constant nausea. Maybe the blood pressure issues will go away too.
