Fred,
In Novemeber of last year (2011)I started taking topamax to replace phenobarbital. I had a grand mal seizure in January, and May. In September of this year, I was taken to the hospital for a panic attack. In November, I had 2 grand mals and several absence seizures. Needless to say, I am in the process of switching back to the phenobarbital. After the topamax, I was in the process of trying Lamictal XR, and found that I was allergic to it.(Rash and bruising side effects.) My neuro wanted me to try Depakote next, but I had to be realistic. I wanted my QUALITY of life back. Keep notes, topamax robbed me of many memories. I found myself repeating things to people, forgetting what I had done the previous day, if I had taken my medication or not, etc. If it's important: WRITE IT DOWN. Talk to your neuro about ANY side effects. Not sure which type of Epilepsy you have, I take the generic form of Keppra along with the phenobarbital to control my seizures. I wish you the best of luck, but urge you to use caution
and keep track of any new symptoms.

I am currently taking buspr for anxiety mornin and night. Also I was just diagnosed with hashimotos disease. I was put on 50mcg of synthroid in the morning. I then take xanex and sometimes ambien at night. I feel a little less panic felin but still depressed and anxious. Worse part is I'm always hungry and my husband keeps telling me I'm gonna get fat !!! I'm 5'6 and 178 lbs. iWork out 3-5 days a week. I feel so lost at what else I can do. Is there anyway to curb my hunger? Don't need to be a supermodel but I would like to look pretty.

Hi, I have been on Topamax for 3 yrs. I am 26 yrs old college student. It has been the roughest drug I have ever been on. However at the same time I have lost over 100lbs. on this med. I used to be 220 standing @ 5'0. I now weigh 95; my ideal weight for my hieht. that is what keeps me taking the medication that and I need it for a mood stabilizer as well. Now the bad side of Topamax actually get pretty intense. I developed a skin condition I think that is referred to as Rehniods. Where in mild wheather your hands and feet lose blood circulation, turn white and go numb...then get very painfull.and I now may have permenant nerve damage. Other side effects include severe hairloss, memory loss and brain fog, cognitive incapalitites as well. My over all oppinion of this drug is that it's not worth the easy weightloss, while sacrificing your mind, pain, and hair. It's a horrible comprimise. sweet.run@hotmail.com
hi how much hair did u lose? Do you think if I continue taking topamax I can go bold?? I lost A LOT already thanks

I see everyone pretty much has posted for migraines, I understand completely. I used to get them real bad. But a very low hormone birth control helped with those. But now I've been prescribed them for severe pain, I dnt c many postings for this. I dnt understand why. Makes me nervous.

And I am already losing hair due to stress(dads extremely sick, back pain and hair loss) so I'm also really worried about the hair loss. I'm already about half as thick as my hair used to be. So it seems like an option A or option B situation. Not as much back pain or major hair loss. But the weight loss seems like not that bad of a trade. But I'm already very self conscious about my hair, as I have told my doctor this. He knew not to put me on anything that hair loss was a factor. Now on top of this, I'm not sure I can trust him completely after reading the side effects and all these posts.

I've been on Topamax for 4 weeks now and I have had severe tingling in my fingers and toes. Comparable to pins and needles. I've had difficulty concentrating as well as memory loss-I've been forgetting small things (such as to put my shoes away at work, to write things on the prep list and I forgot to lock the door) These are very unusual things for me.

I've lost my appetite completely. I had a very strong appetite to begin with and now I am eating only when I am told by my concerned boyfriend. I am drinking plenty of fluids to decrease the risk of a kidney stone. So far I have lost 8lbs.

This drug seems to have a considerable number of side effects, I hope that it will decrease the severity of the migraines..

Topomax is my miracle drug. It has kept me migraine free for 2 1/2 years from migraines that would literally debilitate me for 3 days at a time. At first I was on 50 mg twice a day and had weird side effects like my hands felt like they had touched a hot stove and carbonated drinks tasted tinny. Plus, my thought processes were delayed. My neurologist brought the dosage down to 25 mg twice a day and the side effects disappeared. I love the drug, plus I lost 40 lbs!! It curbs your appetite.

I started taking Topamx for cluster migraines and early stage MS about three months ago and it has been a miracle drug for me. If had given me my quality of life back. I was hugging my toilet every morning and didn't know if I was going to make it to work. It was a miserable existence. I, too, dealt with all the nasty side effects. The first month was pretty bad. I understand why they call it Dopamax. I felt stupid. I couldn't hold a conversation to save my life. I almost wrecked my car a few times. I got lost driving down the highway in my own town. I felt like I was drunk. I was lucky to have a friend that was a pharmacist to help me through me it. If it weren't for her I'm not sure I would have stayed on it. It was worth it though. What I wasn't prepared for was the weight loss. I'm 5'2 and was 130. Since October I've dropped down to 113. It's left me with virtually no appetite. I have to force myself to eat, which sucks because I really love food and find no enjoyment in it now.

I'm sure I'm going to lose more weight although I don't want to, but I don't want to cut my dosage in fear of my headaches coming back. I'm just thankful the tingling and confusion went away. That was something I couldn't deal with long term!

You're on a really high dosage. I take 100mg day. Rarely getting the numbness and tingling anymore. Have you asked your dr about decreasing your dosage?
