Topamax does have some very serious side effects... weight loss is definately one of them yet a person should not look at this medication for weight purposes.. It is intended for migraine prevention and seizures

I am losing all my hair!!!!!
I have been taking topamax for around 6 months and I lost around 20 pounds or more. all is great but I am losing my hair, and i mean really LOSING IT ALL!!
please somebody help me what shpuld I do?? I am desperate I don't want to lose my hair but I don't want to stop taking topamax, please help
Unfortunately hair loss is a common side effect of taking Topamax. I've been taking 50mg twice daily for migraine prevention for the last 2 years and estimate I have now lost half my hair. I had very thick and curly hair, so for a while could get away with losing a few strands but now I'm really struggling with it. My other concern is that at 46 I need to get it back before menopause as I don't want to be left with thinning hair for the rest of my life. I believe it will take about a year to recover after stopping the medication so I'm ready to give it up even though it offers great migraine control.
I have been on the generic and have read several times that the name brand has less side effects, even though my Dr didn't concur. I take Biotin and a multi vit daily which is supposed to help but I'm still losing hair :(

I have been on topamax for about 3 weeks now for severe migraines. I have only lost about 4 pounds.....
Why would a doctor prescribe this medication just for weight loss in the first place.....that is not is purpose. If that is your reason for taking it, there are many other things, safer things to do to lose weight.
I needed this to try amd stop having a disableing migraine once to twice a week.

I have been taking 300mg of topamax for over 6 years the thing about the weight loss is you never feel hungry and that is NOT GOOD. I have to remember to eat or I get very sick. I take to topamax for servere migraines, I have them do bad that I end up spending weeks at a time in the hospital. I know this med very well and I would not never use it for weight loss.

thank you for answering. Do you have holes (areas with no hair) on your head? People can notice that you don't have hair? I stopped taking topamax last week and this week I lost A LOT of hair. I don't understand why since I am not on it anymore. I just want to know if I am going to lose all the hair on the top of my head cause I almost have none

Hi, I have been on Topamax for 3 yrs. I am 26 yrs old college student. It has been the roughest drug I have ever been on. However at the same time I have lost over 100lbs. on this med. I used to be 220 standing @ 5'0. I now weigh 95; my ideal weight for my hieht. that is what keeps me taking the medication that and I need it for a mood stabilizer as well. Now the bad side of Topamax actually get pretty intense. I developed a skin condition I think that is referred to as Rehniods. Where in mild wheather your hands and feet lose blood circulation, turn white and go numb...then get very painfull.and I now may have permenant nerve damage. Other side effects include severe hairloss, memory loss and brain fog, cognitive incapalitites as well. My over all oppinion of this drug is that it's not worth the easy weightloss, while sacrificing your mind, pain, and hair. It's a horrible comprimise. sweet.run@hotmail.com
Hi thank you so much for your comment. I stopped taking topamax since last week causs I lost almost 60% of hair and this week i lost A LOT of hair i dont understand why cause i am not in it anymorejust want to know if am going to lose all the hair on the top of my head cause I almost have none

I've been on Topamax since 2005. The first few weeks were tough. Tingle in the fingers, dry mouth ...all the side effects were very apparent but the entire exercise is worth it if you want to lose the weight. I lost almost 50 pounds and I now take 50 mgs (100mg pill cut in half) with dinner along with metformin (an anti diabetic medication). I eat everything and maintain my weight but eat small portions before I am full. This works but go to a good doctor as I am for supervision.
did you lose any hair ?

Hi Dania...I don't have any holes, it's thinner at the front around my temples and if I run my fingers through my hair over the top of my skull it feels noticeably thinner. I seem to have generalised thinning rather than patches. It is growing back very slowly around my temples but not quickly enough to replace the amount I'm losing. My family have noticed that it's not what it used to be but because it's curly I'm still able to make it look thicker than it is but I no longer straighten it(ugh). I've read more than once that the hair will keep falling out even after stopping the medication as it takes time for its effects to leave your system and that it will take a year for your hair to get back to normal. Try not to despair too much more, you're on the right track...you've stopped Topamax! If you're not already taking Biotin, start now and a multivit vit, I don't know if that has helped me at all as I've been taking them right from the start but I'll do anything to try and minimise the damage from this medication. There are also some shampoos that are supposed to be beneficial...can't hurt anyway.

I took my first Topamax half an hour ago. The doctor prescribed it to me for weight loss. So long I'm waiting for some of the symptoms to appear. Nothing has happened till now. Talking about hair loss, when does it start to appear? Does everyone suffer from hair loss or only a part of the population?

And I also want to know whether you regain your cognitive abilities.Because I'm an A grade student and I take pride in my intelligence. It horrifies me to think that this drug would make me stupid,

Apparently you regain your normal cognition after stopping the medication but I have read a few scary posts on different forums where people say they haven't returned to normal! It is called Dopamax for a reason. Problems with cognition and hair loss are two of the main complaints you seem to hear about on forums and both are extremely frustrating to say the least. In my experience short term memory, spelling, grammar, basic problem solving and finding words all became really problematic. I'm a registered nurse but fortunately not working whilst I've been on Topamax because I couldn't do it on this drug, it has effected me that much. My attention to detail, which used to be spot on, has really waned and along with that my accuracy is really off...can never seem to park well anymore, always off to one side!
The weight loss seemed to be the only silver lining in the otherwise dark cloud of side effects of this drug but lately (may have even been this forum) I've been reading that once people stopped it, they put all the weight they lost and more back on straight away, which is pretty scary. I've only lost 10lb, which at first I was a little miffed about as I could have lost another 20lb but after reading that I don't mind at all as I do want to get off it and don't want to find myself putting on weight uncontrollably.

I personally feel that if a person needs topamax for the sile purpose of weight loss amd that alone
.. he or she needs help and rhe Dr needs to have his or her licence evoked. Topamax is not for weight loss. That is a side effect. I take it because i have severe migraines sometimes 2 to 3 times a week. I have tried many other medications, and nothing has helped. I have only been on topamax for a month
So far it has limited the number of migraines...but not completly taken them away.

Dania, were you taken off topamax slowly? It should never be stopped cold turkey. Even people who have never had seizures can have them if they stop it suddenly. Reducing the dose slowly also helps minimise any withdrawal issues. The dose should be reduced as slowly as it was introduced, ie the same regime in reverse. Hopefully you weren't started on your full dose initially.

Thanks for replying. I stopped taking it because my mother threw them away since topamax was making me drowsy and I can't afford being drowsy all the time. I didn't tell her about the side effects but my mother didn't want me to take it from the beginning itself because she didn't feel safe about an ' anti-epileptic drug'. I guess that is a good thing to happen with me.

Completely understand that! I've just changed shampoo to "Clear" the one that Heidi Klum advertises and it definitely makes it look thicker and healthier and so far I'm not losing as much when I wash it. I'm still on Topamax though as I have to decide what I'm going to replace it with to control my migraines. Ugh, the side effects of everything. Good luck!
