Hair loss whilst on Topamax is not just as a result of rapid weight loss. Unfortunately it is a direct side effect of taking this drug. I understand hair loss can be associated with rapid weight loss but I have only lost 10lbs and have been on Topamax for nearly 2 years. I lost the weight in the first couple of months of taking it but my hair continues to fall out despite daily vitamins and biotin. I have lost half of my very thick hair, so thick and curly I used to complain about how difficult it was to manage. Now I am so thankful it is curly so that I at least look like I still have reasonable hair even though it is in terrible condition and is half what it used to be. I don't know how much longer I can tolerate the horrible side effects of this medication even though it works so well to control my migraines. Apart from the hair loss I'm fed up with being so stupid! The cognitive side effects wear you down over time.
So does the hair loss ever stop? I haven't noticed much if any weight loss from this medication ~ still get occasional migraines & need to take Imitrex for those ~ but the hair loss lately is awful. It didn't start right away but I've noticed it a lot lately. I've been on the med for about 9 mos. I also recently had surgery & was wondering if the hair loss was from that since its really just started since surgery.

Hi Tracey...I can't comment as to whether your hair loss has anything to do with your surgery but in my experience the hair loss is not stopping. I'm not even sure how much I'm controlling it with the vitamins and biotin as I started taking them as soon as I started the Topamax to try an minimize the damage. There are many forums like this one that discuss hair loss and Topamax where you will find other people's experiences. Most say there hair didn't start to grow back until after they stopped taking it and it took about a year to fully recover. My hairdresser also told me it would take a year to get back to normal. Many also reported that it didn't stop falling out immediately after stopping the medication either. The medication had to be completely gone from your system before they noticed a change.

Thanks for responding! Did yours start to fall out right away? I'm puzzled because mine did not ~ maybe about 6-9 months after starting meds. Weight loss has not been a big side effect for me ~ maybe 10 lbs total but I attribute that to diet & exercise. I had a hair appt last night and my hair dresser actually commented about my hair loss & asked if I was taking any new meds. It didn't even dawn on me until this morning & thought I'd google Topamax. I too take Biotin ~ thank goodness ~ who knows I'd probably be bald by now if not. Seriously considering getting off this & finding another solution for migraines.

I am 5'9" and started topamax a week and a half ago for migraines and also needed to lose a little weight at 156 and I am already at 147 today. I don't really have an appetite and I've exercised a few times this week (about an hr on the elliptical 3-4x). I've been eating oatmeal in am, sandwich for lunch with piece of fruit and carrots or green beans with 3-4oz of chicken for dinner. I'm not really hungry.

I noticed single strands of hair on my pillow straight away and that had never happened before and then it started coming out when I was washing it, pretty much as soon as I reached my maintenance dose. I was horrified when it first started as I felt this thing sliding down my leg as I was washing the out the conditioner and it was a blob of hair! Prior to this I had never had a problem with losing any hair in the shower. I don't know how much the biotin and and multi vits are helping but I'm not stopping them for fear of losing more hair than I already do. I also find a lot of strands on my clothes which I hate. Prior to Topamax I was on Inderal for 7 or 8 years which also controlled my migraines very well but I put on 15kgs in that time as it effects your heart rate so has side effects related to that. I wanted to get off it for those reasons and now I'm losing my mind and my hair instead!

I'm just wondering how long i have to be off topimax before getting the weightloss side-effect back? I'm taking a 1 month break from the medicine (adviced by my doctor) and I really hope to lose some of the weight i have regained since taking the break.

I was in a motorcycle accident July 2010 and was pretty bad off. 30+ surgeries and more metal in my body than bones. I was in and out of the hospital for the last 2 years and still have more surgeries to go thru. But anyway i have gained 80 depressing pounds and i am deeply sadened by how much life has changed and how much the accident took from me.
But anyway my Psychiatrist finally gave me this topamax drug to help with my moods and wow I look it up and find it has this wonderful side effect of weight loss! I hope it works for me. Nothing ever has before.
I eat cuz I'm sad and I'm sad cuz I eat. That's my vicious cycle.
So I'm praying this topamax helps my sadness and my weight loss!

I took topamax last year and lost like 30lbs. I was on it for fibromyalgia.I did stop taking it because of hairloss, but my pain became so severe again that I decided to ask my pain specialist to put me back on it .I did research and found that Topamax robs the body of essential vitamns and minerals,so I bought some Biotin and zinc and started taking the Topamax again along with these and a Centrum. It helps so much with the fibro pain.I also have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.I really liked the weightloss without having to really try;with these conditions make it hard to do alot of exercise.I do yoga, but heavy duty exerciseing is out of the question.
With all of this going on can I ask if you are on dissability?

I started at 250mg weird tingley side effects.felt like spider webs on my nose also got kidney stones often.but also started at 235 lbs in may of 2009 went to 168 by Sept 2009 I worked out alot after seeing weight come off. I never thought it was realistic for me to be smaller.but after being off and on it at higher doses and eventually stopping I am now 240 lbs two yrs
Later I'm disgusted at my weight need to be back on it just worried about kidney stones and the low blood pressure.

I started at 50mg a day and lost 12 lbs in the first week. I have almost every side effect from the constant stagnant taste to the sleeplessness. This drug is horrible. I am trying to tough it out hoping things get better but I honestly dont know how much more I can take. Been awake 37 hours and. Counting at this very moment and haven't eaten in 2 days!

I believe it is not so much the drug is self as I have used topomax for 10 yrs a dose of 150mg and never lost any weight until I had a tramtic event in my life which caused depression to me...So I beleive it is the depression side effect which causes weight loss as that is when I only lost weight while on topomax..

I have been on topamax for 2 weeks now and have not lost a pound. Like I said in my first post my traumatic life event plaqued me with so different changes to life as I knew it and the depression has been ongoing for 2+ years. The only thing depression has ever done for me was add weight since I am a emotional eater. :-(.

I will share my two cent's worth. I was prescribed Topamax to help stabilize my moods. At low doses, for me, such as 25-50, it did not cause weight loss or decreased appetite. When I went up to 100mg in the am and 100mg in the pm, I lost 37 pounds in appx 3 months or less, I would lose three pounds per week. I ate, like 1 yogurt a day. Then it just stopped working.( for the weight loss). And believe me, I still need to lose 50-60 to get back to my pre- pregnancy weight. And I did have the mental fog, word-searching, it might as well have mind eraser on the label, and I was a straight A student who always prided myself on my "intelligence". There's a reason it's called "Dopamax" .

I've been on topamax for a month for migraines and I've experienced some mild symptoms such tighting of the face, delayed thoughts, excessive dry mouth and loss of appetite. I started with 25mg for 2wks and then 50mg after that. I think that I've only lost 1 or 2 lb's. I was on topamax in 2007 and lost 45 lbs and my doctor took me off of it because I lost too much weight and plus I was military and they didn't carry the medicare overseas in Bahrain. Now I have a civilian doctor and I asked to be put back on it and I am getting completely different results. I weight 159 lbs and I am 5'2 and I need to lose at lease 30 lbs for health issues since I have lupus and I stay fatigue all the time. I have chronic migraines and I am finally getting some relief from them. The side effects are not as bad as I thought they would be but I do need to drop down to at least 125 lbs and I was hoping that the Topamax would help me do it safely.
