Topamax for weight loss

I am taking topamax not for weight loss but for the prevention of seizures. However, I have lost 65 pounds in six months so far due to taking Topamax and other than some side affects, such as food tasting metallic and when someone is cooking, the smell will make you crazy. Topamax has worked great for me but I have heard others say the side affects were bad for them. But then again, I am taking it really to help prevent seizures and losing weight was a great "plus" feature to the medication.

Has anyone heard of taking Topamax for weight loss? I completed my treatments in May and am having trouble shedding a few "unwanted" pounds due to the chemo "throwing" me into menopause. My Oncologist suggested this med at 25mg at bedtime. Just wondering if anyone has had any results? Thanks.

I am on day five of taking 25mg of topamax for migraines. I have not had any significant side effects. Just the metallic taste in my mouth. I am already pretty healthy, just added lots of water to my diet, and agree the desire to eat is less, however I cook for a big family, so reminded to eat. I have been headache free, and will add the second dose of 25mg at the end of the week. I did feel really OFF the first day and a half, but now feel fine on this drug. I think am closing in on middle age and wonder if age has anything to do with the various effects this medication has on a person.

i started taking it as a mood stabilizer, but a year ago had two random seizures (likely the result of too high a dosage of wellbutrin which i no longer take, beware of wellbutrin!) and am now taking it again for that. i've been off of it for awhile as i couldn't afford it, but i'm back on it now. when i was taking it, i lost 30 pounds in a month. i've been taking it for a week now, and my appetite is starting to leave me again...another thing i notice with it is that when i do feel like eating, i can only eat whatever one random thing i feel like, anything thing else will make me sick, i can't even chew anything but the one thing i feel like w/out feeling gaggy, it's the strangest thing! i'm not complaining though as i could stand to lose about thirty pounds, so this time it'll be welcome!

I have started taking phentramine for weight loss and have heard that combining topamax with it is miraculous does anyone know about this combo? The mixed reviews about topamax alone is kinda freakin me out. I have about 60 lbs of fat to lose but wanna keep my muscle. I do sports and get exercise but cant control my daily cravings and binges which causes the constant fat gain.

Christina, my doctor told me that phentermine and topamax were not a good mix. Did your dr. recommend this to you? I was prescribed Topamax in April of this year for migraines. I have yet to weigh myself but I do know that I've went down atleast 1 dress size and that is with no exercise. I eat less, can't stand the taste of soda or sweets..which ironically were my favorite things in life. Since my blood pressure meds were changed to a diuretic and I was placed on cholesterol meds..I have also changed my diet. No more fast foods or fried foods. The beautiful part of it is...the headaches are no more!:)

Hi Cat, I used to have NES for years. Topamax has truly changed my life. I don't get up & sleep eat anymore, I sleep soundly all though the night. I take my 100mg dose at night. I lost 50lbs in 6mos. Best of luck!

I have always eaten during the night; carbohydrates. I am up at least every two hours. When I took ambien I still got up and ate, I just didn't always remember it. It was too scary because sometimes I cooked. I didn't realize there actually is something called, NES, night eating syndrome. I have taken every sleeping pill; they don't really work and some give me headaches in the morning. My phycologist suggested topomax. I am about 40 lbs overweight. Some people here have said it makes them sleep better, but does anyone take it for a sleeping disorder?

I took this drug for about 5 months at age 18 for constant migraines. I dropped close to 40 pounds but it is not at all healthy weight loss and I do not recommend taking it at all if it can be avoided, especially just for weight loss. I eventually was weaned off the drug after it was discovered that my liver enzymes were elevated and that it had caused metabolic acidosis (a serious, potentially fatal, condition where your blood and tissues become too acidic). This is in addition to several of the other side effects people mention, such as numbness, tingling, and pretty bad cognitive interference.

One of the side effects of Topamax is losing weight. However, people have different opinions about this kind of side effect. There are those who see it as something good while there are those who see it as another bad side effect of Topamax. And speaking of bad side effects of Topamax, we all know how pregnant women gave birth to children with cleft palate. In fact, cleft palate lawsuits are now being considered. More details from this resource that I found:

Hi, I started Topamax about 3 weeks ago for migraines. I am at 50 mg 2 times a day. Last week though I just started dropping weight like crazy though. I have gone from 214 lbs to 207 lbs in one week. Which is good, but seems just a little to good. I have other side effects. I don't ever want to eat (I love to eat, or I USED to) and I am a little more spacy than usual. That weight loss just seems a bit drastic and unhealthy. I obviously can stand to lose 70 lbs but 7 lbs a week is super fast, like a dream come true fast. Will it slow down or continue at this pace? I will just drink plenty of water and eat my fruits and vegetables. I look forward to hearing from you.

Omg! Two things! First how did I not know about the weight loss side effect? I have been this for over a year and only taking 1/2 my dose if that. Not lost any weight! Need to lose 75 lbs. I'm on it for migraines from Femara, drop in estrogen. I bet it would help me sleep better too, as I have severe insomnia due to the drop in estrogen. Also, my hair is thinning terribly.......how do I combat that?

In my honest opinion, I think it's very irresponsible for any physician to prescribe Topamax for 'weight loss' alone. I've been on 100mg for little over a year and only lost about 10 lbs and though it certainly didn't hurt to lose that - I wasn't remarkably overweight in the 1st place, so it wasn't that big a deal. You know what I DID lose? My overall 'good' health.

I took Topamax 100mg per day for Migraines that had become more severe and more frequent due to a physical incident. I had wanted off the Topamax 6 months into taking it, but my Dr. at the time said no and that I was fine. I didn't feel fine. I got a new Dr. recently and I'm not fine.

Topamax in the last year has caused the following:

Kidney Problems (not functioning as well as should be according to blood tests and blood in urine w/ no UTI present - mild/moderate pain in that region)

Dizziness - nothing in blood work or brain MRI's point to cause (recent findings of plaque build up in carotid artery - may or may not be related - but never had that problem before starting Topamax)

'Foggy' headed - having a hard time remembering to do things (even mundane, daily/weekly things that need to be done or if I had done them had to actually think about it) Loss for words, difficulty completing sentences, verbalizing thoughts.

Muscle Weakness with occasional twitching (the facial & eye twitching is the worst - try having a conversation w/ someone while that's happening and watch how they look at you. You can barely complete a cognitive sentence and your eye is twitching uncontrollably. It's SO embarrassing!

Bone pain - self explanatory

Fatigue

Mild Depression - Going through all that who WOULDN'T be at least mildly depressed.

Now I'm finally coming off of it, which has to be done gradually. My head is clearing and that's helping the depression as well.

There are safer ways to lose weight. Not that weight was my problem - if I lost 75 lbs, I'd weight well less than 100 lbs and, well that in itself would kill me. Honestly, losing another 10 lbs wouldn't hurt me though.

BUT,- I'd rather be 'Fat & Happy' than 'Thin & Sickly' any day.

I was prescribed Topamax because I suffered migraines 2-3 times a week. I was in the emergency room for a brain anyerysm last November. My neurologist prescribed me 100mg (50 morning/50 eve) at first but I was still suffering, missing work and in the emergency room constantly so then I was at 400 daily (200 morning/200 evening) and then migraines stopped... not completely but 2 times a month is better than 3 times a week and no more sick days.. but the weight dropped... which was good for me.. i went from 160 pounds to 100. I had friends ask what I was doing.. etc.. but.. my bmi was at 19 which is boderline anorexic but my doctor lowered my dose.. so I am always changing my dosage and my weight is steady now but I will not go off of Topamax because I dont want to suffer from migraines all the time and miss work and visit the ER... trust me it was not fun and Im still paying medical bills from those visits.. as long as you are being monitored by your doctor with the dosage and drinking plenty of water and getting your blood checked regularly you will be fine! Its worth not getting as many migraines!

Hi everyone, Ive been struggling with my weight for years, and a friend of mine started taking Topamax for her migraines and she just dropped weight like crazy. Ive tried everything and am at the desperate point, therefore, I ordered topamax online because I want to lose weight. Im about 50 lbs overweight. It scares me that Im not under a doctors care but I am going to do this no matter. What i need to know is, whats the best way to take these pills? I ordered the 25mg. Whens the best time to take them? At night or morning? And how much should I take? and when do I increase? ive researched this so much, that im already taking biotin and b-12 to curb certain side effects. I dont want to losemy hair, its thin already.(unlike me) lol Im doing this on my own. Any help without criticism is greatly appreciated. thank You. oh and can I drink alcohol while taking this??

I took Topamax for several years as a migraine preventative. I started a 25mg and worked my way up to 75mg. I ended up losing about 25 lbs in about 6 months, then the weight loss leveled and I was able to maintain the weight. I DO NOT recommend taking this drug simply for weight loss! It can cause so many issues that many don't realize - such as dehydration and severe risk of overheating, completely changes the taste of some foods, hair loss (coming out in chunks), and the worse for me was cognitive issues. I became such a stuttering idiot that I had to warn my boss about customers complaining. Fortunately the inability to 'find words' slowly came back.

I am now off of Topamax because I am trying to conceive. My headaches are even better and less frequent than when I was on it. Unfortunately, I have gained almost all of the weight back without the slightest of eating or lifestyle changes. PLEASE be careful with this drug. It may sound alluring, but it changes your personality, body functions (you never realize how much you need to sweat until your body can't do it), and it changes your seizure threshold, meaning that if you don't maintain the drug correctly, your risk of seizure is greatly increased.

this drug ruined my life, made me so stupid I could not even explain what was happening because I could not articulate a thought or hold on to a thought long enough to try. I lost 50lbs in 6 months but that effect went away. I just stopped it 6 days ago and was on it for 2 years. my co-workers thought I was mentally ill or abusing drugs and tried to get rid of me after 6 years. They reported me to the college of nurses. my lawyer sent me for a psych assessment last week and the first thing he said was to STOP TOPAMAX right then never take another one. I've been on 200mg a day. I still fell foggy as before, and I'm almost bald, I've lost about 80% of my hair. Does anyone know if this is permanent ? or how long will it take to get bake to normal, this med with Lamictal made it much worse. If you only knew how long it took me to type
this.
wow,i have been weighing the pros and cons about this drug and your comment is really making me think hard about my decision,i am so sorry for the things that happened to you while taking this drug!so about the hair loss,i have been losing my hair since i was 15,i am now 23,one of the first things you should do is go to your primary doctor and tell them to refer you to a dermatologist, they will help you with the hair loss, but i would recommend going to the store and getting biotin, its something you can buy in any store and to my knowledge is like a vitamin,it helps your skin, nail growth and hair growth,i know how it feels to have major hair loss and wish you all the luck in the world and hope things get better for you,god bless.

I got up to 350 lbs (I'm 6'2"). I was injured in 04' in Iraq and the pain from RSD keeps me from using my left leg most of the time and on crutches.
About 3 months ago I was switched to 300mg of Topamax taken 3x daily in 100mg doses.
It has not only helped with the pain in the sympathetic nerves in my leg.
But I have already lost 105 lbs.
Combined with my Spinal cord stimulator Implant, and other medication, I am walking again. The more weight I lose the less pain I feel when I walk, and the more walking I can do before I lose control over my leg due to pain flare ups and muscle spasms.
I have only experienced so far the pins and needles, and slight cognitive problems (sometimes I don't feel as smart as I know I am lol).
So far It has worked wonders for me.
JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY,AND SORRY FOR THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE YOU WERE OVER THERE.GLAD TO HEAR THAT IT IS HELPING YOU IN SO MANY WAYS!
