Women in the Fire Service have not been supported by the beaucratic institutions ever since they first joined more than 40 years ago. Breast cancer is not considered an occupational illness by the California's State Workers Compensation and many female firefighters find themselves with little support to battle a disease that can no longer be ignored as not job related! To add more insult to these women, their colleagues are now hampered from helping them with a donation of sick time. It is just outrageous that these brave women are left to fend for themselves; often to have to return to full duty after breast cancer treatment with no recognition that their exposure to toxins from flame retardant products are most likely the culprit of their cancer. New legislation is necessary to cover these women under current disability insurance benefits and better protection of their gear (which doesn't protect them now from these toxins) and a ban of this widely used flame retardant must be pursued by our legislators. Don't leave these women firefighters in the cold!
