A little more info on the patent...
Hey Jeff E. Seems like the US Government Dept of Health an Human Services thinks pot does a lot more than temporarily relieve pain...

The US Government holds a patent (US Patent # 6630507) on cannabinoids and their antioxidant effects.

The Owner/Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Health and Human Services

It describes cannabinoids particular use as neuroprotectants, which limits possible neurological damage after an ischemic event, or an event that robs the brain of oxygen.

There's also reference to its use in treatment and prophylaxis of neurodegenerative diseases such as alzheimers, parkinsons, and HIV dementia.

Here's the Abstract:

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.

I am curious about the administration of the THC in many of these studies. While not skeptical of the medicinal value, I do find it hard to swallow that inhaling the smoke of resinous leaves is not health averse

That is a good point and one I was curious about myself.
I read one of the studies on lung cancer and it was indeed administered by smoking it. I would think vaporizing it might work even better. Eating it might not be as effective on lung cancer, but I would think it would be better for other ailments, although it could be than some benficial cannabinoids are destroyed during digestion, I don't know.

Certainly. Let's legalize it. Then EVERYONE walking (staggering?) around Humboldt County can look and act like the unwashed brain-dead droolers that populate Arcata.

And didn't PCP, cocaine, and heroin start off as medical developments?

The real money is going to be the pseudo-counseling clinics dealing with the addiction to THC.

But I'm sure that will be free with Obamacare just like everything else

I'm not aware of a single, peer-reviewed study that has ever found a link to smoking cannabis with lung cancer, and would be interested in knowing of any, if anybody would be so kind as to find one. Contrast that with studies about cigarettes and lung cancer, and compare that with which one is legal and which one is illegal.

As noted above, if you've really got yourself into a twist about it, you could always vaporize or ingest it.

Cool! Thanks for your report. Same thing worked for me, aided by scariness of discovering I have Hep C. No hooch for five years.

The cannabis really helps with arthritic joint pain, particularly when augmented with MSM - available in bulk powder very cheap ($17/Lb) at natural food grocery stores. 1/4 tsp a couple times a day of MSM in water or juice is a major dose which makes some people fart but I have been unable to discover any negative news or drug interactions with MSM.

Cannabis salve, particularly when augmented with Arnica, Calendula and other anti-inflammatants, is also good for finger, hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, knee joint pain.

IF YOUR REALLY, REALLY SICK, AND NEED IT FOR MEDICINE, MAYBE. BUT THERE MUST BE AN AWFULLY LOT OF PEOPLE WITH CANCER HERE IN "RIVER CITY" IT'S DOPE, IT USE BY DOPERS, THEY ARE HOOKED, AND THEY DON'T WANT TO LET IT GO, PLAIN AND SIMPLE. IF THERE THAT MANY PEOPLE SICK WITH CANCER, WE NEED TO HAVE OUR COUNTRY CHECKED FOR WHAT'S CAUSING IT. LAME EXCUSES PEOPEL!!

Yep , that's right folks . As mentioned above the BIG alcohol and i strongly believe the Drug Companies ( Pfizer )being the main one's are spending millions ans millions to put our Ads to deceive ( trick ) you into thinking marijuana is bad when all along it has been their drugs that kill cause health problems & not Cannabis .The " drug testing " kits was another trick they used . This is mass deception put out by the drug companies used so you'll take their deadly drugs and not use marijuana ,

The vast majority of pot prescriptions in Humboldt are for the treatment of alcoholism.

You spout this every few months or so, and then when I mention all the man hours it would actually take, and violations of patient privacy that would have to be done to determine anything like this, you never respond back.

I'm still wondering what makes you so passionate about this that you would so blatantly just lie through your teeth?

I would also like to remind you of what kind of idiot it would take to actually believe what you say is even possible to get the data on, and what kind of bigger idiot it would take to believe that other people would be idiotic enough to actually believe it.

I know there are words made up of letters here, but maybe you'll decipher it?

The vast majority of medical marijuana prescriptions written in Humboldt county are for recreational use, using a vast array of symptoms to qualify for it, and the doctors that write the 215 recommendations are very lenient with their pens. After all, it's an easy 100 bucks or whatever for them.

I agree with the studies that have been done, and recognize that marijuana has beneficial properties. However, the great majority of the people that champion this cause are in it for their buzz, not for their pain.

I know many people who are 215, and I am speaking from my own experience with them.

With that being said, I recommend legalizing ALL drugs for whatever purpose that the user intends. Of course, if they mess themselves up, it is up to them to PAY for their own medical care, or PAY for the damage that they cause while consuming their substances. Personal responsibility goes both ways. Vote Libertarian!

Hey, no one. the anti cancer benefits and pain relief from cannabis come from INGESTION of cbd's, not inhaling thc smoke. Perhaps you need lessons in the different cannabinoids contained in cannabis? THC is only ONE CLASS of cannabinoids, and THC is the only PSYCHOACTIVE cannabinoid. The scientists have isolated 75 NON PSYCHOACTIVE cannabinoids. it is these 75 cannabinoids that are pain relievers and cancer inhibitors.

CANNABIS - it's not just a smoked medicine.

its ingestion through edibles and tinctures, not smoking.

Amazing isn't it? Study after study show the benefits and the total LACK of harm done by using MJ, yet the boneheads won't accept facts. I know, let's spend a bunch more money on some gubmint-funded studies to refute these positive ones. Yeah, dat's it, let's study it some more. LOL, it's only the most studied substance on earth. Give it up, boneheads. Go have a another beer.
