My daughter almost died 2-1/2 years ago after taking these pills for about 6 weeks. After a week in the ICU, a clot buster procedure, and 4 titanium stents in her iliac, she took coumadin for 8 months. When the hospital released her, she underwent genetic testing, and it was found she has one bad clotting gene, known as heterzygous Factor V Leiden. More testing showed her father and I each have one bad clotting gene, but my both my son's clotting genes are defective--homozygous Factor V Leiden, something which needs to be watched carefully. My daughter cannot use any hormones ever and must have daily Lovenox shots when she becomes pregnant. I wanted to sue someone over this, but all these BC pills come with warnings, and doctors don't do any testing before prescribing them to everyone! The reason I'm posting here is that possibly some of you have the same condition and should get genetic testing if you havent' already. Take care.

<quoted text>My precious Baby girl died June 25, 2009 from using Ortho TriCyclene Lo. I agree whole heartedly with you the company should be held responsibile for the children that are dead because of this drug. Believe me we will have our say soon, and although no amount of money will bring our precious little girls back, their deaths will not have been in vain
I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. My thoughts are with you.

My sister just went into the hospital 3 days ago cause she couldnt breath very well, legs hurt, and many of the same symptoms i have read here. It turns out, she also has blood clots and the docs are attributing the clots to the same birth control drug. Does anyone have the statistics that are in the packet that might say the likelihood of blood clots? i have read thru some of these stories and i am just appauled at the number of people just on this site that have had clots. What about the women that are out there that don't know about this site. Theres got to be thousands of women that have gotten blood clots. There has to be something that can be done. At the very least, get this drug pulled from the market. aberg135_1999@yahoo.com

Has anybody heard of any records or anything on file about this drug keeping you from permanently having children? I know its birth control so of course your not supposed to get pregnant, but I've been off of the drug for almost 3 years now and have slipped on being careful quite a few times since then. Is there any chance my body has been affected by the this drug to the degree that I know cant have kids. My friend took a birth control that did that to her. I haven't seen a doctor about it because I'm not sure if I've just been lucky and haven't gotten pregnant or if this medicine has any history stopping other women from being able to conceive a child

I am a healthy 23 year old female who recently suffered an acute deep vein thrombosis and a bilateral pulmonary embolism as a result of my use Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. I was hospitalized for a week, had to receive heparin infusions, and will be on the anticoagulant Coumadin for at least the next 6 months. Had my father (who works in an emergency room) not recognized my symptoms and demanded I receive a duplex ultrasound and CT scan, I very easily could have died from this condition. Although there is a very small printed warning on the label, it is my belief that Ortho-McNeil has seriously downplayed the dangerous nature of their product and that the statistic of "1 in 2000" women who may suffer a blood clot is incorrect. Similar as with the pill Yaz/Yasmin, women who were afflicted with blood clots from Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo ARE ENTITLED TO DAMAGES. I am determined to fight this company and protect women's lives everwhere. Your stories are important and together we can change what we cannot change alone. I have created the following site dedicated to raising awareness and helping me to find women who have suffered a blood clot as a result of Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo. Please contact me and share your story if you are interested in possibly joining in a class action law suit with me:

Now I dont know what to do...is there a safe BC out there?
I know what you mean I have been on this pill for 6 years, I have never had these serious problems with it, these articles are starting to worry me as well. I do however notice I am very tense and I am moody, I don't have much patience with people and I have been wondering if this has something to do with the pills.

My pharmacy has replaced my Orthotrycyclen lo, with ortho sprintec, its the generic version. Once again, I never had problems with OTL nor this one. I am just moody, more so around the time of my period but still I find myself later feeling guilty and asking myself why I acted that way over something so stupid. But this was with both pills. So I am not sure if it even has anything to do with them

I was on Ortho Tricylin Lo for 6 months.
My leg started swelling about 3 weeks ago and I could not walk at all. So I went to an orthopedic surgeon. I got treated for a pulled calf muscle and I got mobility back in my leg. Although they did misdiagnosed me
I began looking online and came across OTC Lo and blood clots. I called my doctor and she said I needed to go to the ER right away.
I went and originally when the ER doctor examined me she said there were no clots. I went for an ultrasound and they found CLOTS in my right leg. They took a CT scan of my lungs and found a clot in my lung.
I am posting this because the only reason I went to the hospital was because of these stories.
I hope my story helps someone else, like these stories have helped me.

Thank you for sharing. I have read these stories and have decided to stop the pill. Since stopping the pill, I am less moody. I do not have panic attacks anymore and my skin looks better. I've been on Ortho lo for six years. The first four years were great, but then they started to stress me out.

I was unable to reach our web link. I'd like to communicate with you because of my daughter's near-death incident 3 years ago. She spent a week in the ICU, had a clot buster procedure and has 4 titanium stents in her iliac due to 6 weeks of these BC pills. We found out she has Factor V Leiden in one of her two clotting genes. Would you mind responding if your web site address has changed, please?

I too was hospitalized for taking the pill. I went to the doctor with pain and shortness of breath, he told me it was a muscle strain in my back. After a week of the pain getting much worst I went to the hospital. Thankfully, they found several pulmonary embolism and a collapsed lung. Spent six days there, then put on blood thinners for months. Eventually I got pregnant and had to inject blood thinners twice a day throughout my whole pregnancy. My problem happened many years ago when they didn't advertise warnings on tv. Every time I watch these commercials I get furious. Their statement gives women a false sense of security. The warnings say, "ESPECIALLY OVER THE AGE OF 35" After reading these posts it happens at ALL ages. Birth control manufactures should NOT mention anything about age. If anyone agrees email me at mik700@cs.com

I was on orth tri cyclen in 2001 when I ended up with a transverse sinus thrombosis, which is a clot in my brain. My neurologist left me on the birth control pills and 6 months later I got a PE, pulmonary embolism, which is a clot in your lungs. I am lucky to be alive with both of these. The doctor from the PE immediately pulled me off of the birth control. I have been and will continue to be on blood thinners my whole life. I have been seeing many lawsuit ads for newer birth control pills but not for ortho, but I was just researching online and came across your post.

My sister who just turned 35 in September started taking Ortho TriCyclen about 3 weeks ago. Sunday, October 18, 2009 my sister was rushed to the E.R. due to severe stomach pains. It started early Sunday morning, she was nauseated all day and had sharp pains shooting in her stomach around her belly buttong. She layed in the E.R. for almost 12 hours before they finally admitted her. She had been given 2 doses of pain meds that did not even touch the pain. She had blood work, x-rays and ct scan but all were read wrong! They finally admitted her and at 10am Monday morning the dr came in and after re-examining her scans and blood work they found she had a large clot in her intestines. Supposed to be a simple procedure, go in through her groin, put in a sheeth and do a series of clot busters right on the clot. Tuesday morning they found the clot buster had worked but found a smaller clot behind where the large one was so they did another round of clot buster. 6hrs. later they found it had worked but found 2 smaller clots in her lower intestines. Wednesday she was still in some pain in her lower back, she was given morphine pump and several different pain meds with that and NOTHING touched the pain. Finally Wednesday night she started to feel some comfort, this whole time the dr's had given us hope that this "simple" procedure had helped and her intestines were healing and she would be good to go. They would begin running tests on her to determine where these clots were coming from and why she was getting them. At 1:30am Thursday morning my sister coded and by 7:30pm Thursday evening she was gone. I lost my sister due to taking birth control pills on Thursday October 22, 2009 and burried her October 27, 2009. Because of a dr's negligence of first of all prescribing a 35 yr old woman birth control but also from letting her lay in pain for days instead of running tests or doing something. My sister left behind a husband of almost 14 yrs. two son ages 11 and 7, parents who loved her, a sister who was her best friend (me) and 2 nephews who adored her and soooooo many more family and friends.

There is something that needs to be done about this. There should be some type of testing they can do to find these defects in women that just do not work with birth control. I hope and pray that something can be done to put a stop to this or take this drug off the market. I know this is why my sister died because of the birth control pills.
We're still waiting on all the testing they did on her blood to see if anything will show, but I know with all my heart it was the birth control pills. She was healthy and fine until the week she started taking them.

I'm so sorry to you all for all you've gone through because of this medication. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Ladies,
My heart goes out to all of you who have lost or nearly lost a love one. I was looking for information on this drug because I believed it was the cause of the hair growth on my daughters sweet face, but it is nothing compared to the things that you all have been through. I am so full right now. I feel like my complaint was nothing. Surely I hope that you all have persued this lawsuit because there is nothing else to be done but to sue. Not that it will bring them back or change anyones condition but to let the pharmaceutical companies know that this is totally unacceptable.
God Bless Each and Everyone of You!
I personally would like someone to email me at
shga32@bellsouth.net and let me know what is going on with this.

I was put on Ortho TriCyclen when I was 14 to help with acne and birth control, a week after my 18th birthday I was hospitalized for 5 days with a blood clot in the main artery of my leg, I had low platelets and was anemic. I was taken off of "the pill" and was told that I could never use any sort of birth control again (except condoms) and put on coumadin, I have to go see a hematologist every 6 month if I have insurance or not. Yes, I was and still is a smoker, but from what I understood, "If you are 35 or older, you are urged not to smoke." Okay, I was not 35 or older and I'm still not! Why are all these other birth control companies being sued and this one hasn't? Is there not enough cases or what? I am not one to believe in suing just to get money, but this screwed up my life and the company could care less! Please can some body do anything or something?

In Jan 2008, I started having pain in my right leg to the point of limping. I went to the ER but they sent me home with Tylenol. I stayed in bed for 30 days (because I couldnt walk) and in February, suddenly I had trouble breathing. Turns out, the clots where in my legs and then moved to my lungs. I had a pulmonary embolism. There were 52 clots in my lungs. I was in the hospital for 3 weeks on morphine every two hours. Coumadin didnt work so now I have to give myself shots of Lovenox twice a day. Shots tht cost $6,289+ a month without insurance. If anyone finds out anything about a lawsuit, please let me know! westbery@gmail.com
