Well its been a couple weeks since having the IUD taken out and I have lost 8lbs and feeling better everyday. My acne is cleared up. My husband already noticed the difference just this last week. One other thing I noticed is that the headaches are gone too, which I didn't really contribute to the IUD but believe now that was yet another symptom. I will probably go on a cleansing diet myself for a time to get rid of the extra 15 pounds I accumulated while on the IUD.

I have gained about 10 pounds in a few months with the copper IUD. And had extreme bloating. I researched and realized it might be from the copper in my body so I tryed anything I could to lose the weight because the IUD is my last option. I hoping if I eat right, exercise, drink tons of water and take zinc supplements that I can get these problems under control from the beginning before the copper has time to build. I have lost some of the weight.I'm also trying to rid my body of toxins from taking birthcontrol for the last 10 years and the preservatives in food etc. By different methods. As "Astonished" stated in her earlier post- 7 ways to rid copper from the body. Well I tryed a colon cleanse using a healthy method, and my stomach is very noticeable smaller in one week!! After months of eating healthy and exercising did little. I've also been experiencing cystic acne which I've never had before. What I find interesting is that in other websites women on the Mirana complained of cystic Acne on their jawline. The same place I have mine. This makes me think that the acne may not be from the copper but either the effect the IUD in general has on the body or the removal of certain hormones from going off the pill and other types of B.C. I found a great website earthclinic.com and it said to use organic apple cider vinigar for cystic acne. Check out the site if you want more information on it. I been trying this for 1 week and haven't got any new acne in that time. But, it hasn't been that long. I'll keep you posted if it works. If only my health department would have warned me about this I could have started taking zinc right away.
I have always had cystic acne even before I got my IUD. I am really going to try this apple cider thing. I don't want to go on antibiotices again for my acne. I have noticed a lot of bloating too. I go and see my dr for an anual next week and I am going to address some of my concerns, even though he already thinks I'm crazy because I have had hives every day since insertion. This is that last option for me... I will not get it taken out at all costs. I am going to go onto this website you said and find other stuff to help me feel better.

Do you think it would be pointless to do a body cleanse if I smoke? That is the only reason I have been holding out on doing one

Wow... look and yee shall find... I have had my IUD (copper/paraguard) for about 9 months... and yep the weight is piling on... so thought I would see if others were experiencing it... guess I'm not alone... so, though not scientifically proven or documented I can't help but think there is more than meets the eye... after all... it increases the length of our periods.. and who doesn't experience increased weight during that time of the month.. .so my guess is that since our hormones are altered by longer periods we must also be putting on the weight for longer than typical.. . thus the increase. I have been debating the removal for pain anyway... I think this may just push me over the edge

I got the IUD because it seem like the perfect birth control pill...no hormones, you can have it for as long as 10 years,99% effective...BUT I didn't know how much the insertion hurts, I didn't know that I was going to break out like crazy and be BLOATED EVERYDAY- no matter how much I diet, exercise and did my ab routine, my lower and middle abs were just hard and round like a pregnant woman's belly. I can't take it no more and after reading how copper toxity and how that can lead to thryoid problems and my family suffers from that, so I'm all set with the IUD. I think it has good sides, but like all medicine there is definetely some bad side effects as well.

At least a body cleanse would reduce the amount of toxins you already have. But I'm far from an expert on the subject. I would inquire at a local organic health food store. Thats the only place I would purchase products like that. Also, Lisa gave great advice in an earlier post on healthy veggie and fruit cleanses. I really like earthclinic.com beause they are not allowed to promote or sell products.

I was on the pill for 7 years and never had a problem really. I switched pills one time and noticed cramping but thats it. I got off of the pill the end of 2006 and got diagnosed with epilepsy in march of 2007. I loved the pill but I know that it is less effective with my seizure medication. Condoms irritate me a lot and so sex with my partner is nothing but frustrating now. My ob/gyn recommended an IUD but after reading these forums im dreading it. I already gained weight when I got off of the pill and Im having trouble losing it for the first time in my life. I dont want to make my appearance worse. I guess my question is, is the IUD worth it?

I had my copper IUD about 20 months ago. Initially after the birth of my baby i was loosing weight but after IUD i started gaining weight. I started suspecting IUD in my inability to loose weight. I also do have very low sexual libido, and i feel like my hormones are not the same they were before i got pregnant. My doctor said that i am getting older, i am 35, it is not that old to start loosing sex drive! I also have the same feeling someone mentioned before that IUD makes you feel slightly pregnant... The interesting thing that no one knows exactly how the copper IUD works, what makes it work, either it is copper, or the shape, or the presence of the foreign body. If they do not know how it works how can they explain the side effects?
I believe that it makes my body produce some hormones which change the way my metabolism works. I want to remove it as well.

I found this article on wikipedia about paragard. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paragard

It mentions that ParaGard prompts the release of leukocytes and prostaglandins by the endometrium.
And then i found this article on prostaglandins:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostaglandins

Which mentions among many other effects that prostaglandins control hormone regulation.
So, how come then doctors say that copper IUD does not mess up hormones? It does change hormone balance and therefore the different side effects we experience: weight gain/loss, heavy/light periods, low/high sex drive, facial hair, yeasts, everyone has their own story. In my case it was low libido, weight gain, yeast, puffy face.

I do believe that the copper in the IUD can have a detrimental impact on our metabolic pathways.

I got the copper IUD after my second child (in Dec 04) because I have had bad reactions to hormonal birth control methods. After getting the IUD I had much heavier & irregular periods. After roughly 2 years they finally became somewhat normal but still heavier than before.

The big issues: 30 lb weight gain (I'm only 25 and I lost all the baby weight before starting the IUD). I am an extremely health conscious eater and despite increasing my workouts to over 60 minutes a day have struggled so much with just trying to prevent the weight gain.

Other issues: Acne (which I've never had), Anemia and hair loss (probably associated with the anemia), Insomnia, mood swings, joint pain.

I believed that I had an autoimmune or thyroid problem because of these symptoms, but the doctor's checked my thyroid and it was fine.

I noticed some of my symptoms decreased after I started regularly taking a super multivitamin with iron, zinc and a B complex (which, as posted before are used to combat copper toxicity). Before finding this thread I had read the literature about copper toxicity. I'm a med student and from a biological standpoint, this explanation makes sense.

Here's my take, if you have slight symptoms take the vitamins, they may help and allow you to keep the IUD.

For me and my severe symptoms, I've decided to have mine removed. I loved the freedom the IUD gave me, and if it were just the menstral issues I probably would keep it, but I now firmly believe that it is causing all the other symptoms.

Thank you everyone for your posts. It has been a real help and comfort. I will repost afterwards and let you know how the symptoms are.

I bleed so bad the first 6 months that I ruined a chair during a job interview. How embarrassing! In spite of it, even though I didn't get the job was one of the top 3 candidates. I guess one could say I left a lasting impression. LOL

If I had read this thread before getting the paraguard, I would have thought that all these posts were just excuses for weight gain. I, like many above posts, have been very exercise and weight conscious forever. With each child I have gotten back to my pre-body almost immediately. Now that I am 36 and had the IUD inserted right after the birth of my second (March of 07), I thought that the weight gain/bloating was just aging and metabolism changes. I am 122 lbs, 5'5" but very muscular and the 4-5lbs weight gain on me is very noticeable.

That said, I think that it takes a certain sensitivity to weight and body to 1) be aware of even these small changes and 2) to search out threads like these - so the posters may all be hyper-aware or concerned with body image (me included of course).

My husband thinks I'm crazy, but I've made an appointment to get it removed. Unfortunately, I get pregnant by making out with him, so BC will be an issue. But now that these side effects of the IUD are in my brain, psychosomatic or not, it's coming out. I'll post again in a few months to let you know if there is a difference.
Thanks for the insights.

Like most of you I did not think that the copper iud could make you gain weight/unable to lose weight.

I put in my IUD after my third baby 5months ago..
and I haven't been able to lose my baby fat no matter how hard I tried. My belly even looked bigger after a few months than it did right after birth.
I have never eaten better and never exercised this much in my life.....

With my first 2 I had lost about 50lbs by 5 months postpartum.

And like everyone says the weight in the midsection...UGH!

Now, I know I am older and it is my third baby but still.....I know my body and like I said I work harder than ever...

Anyways, I had it out 2 days ago and already my belly is flatter...and I will see if the weight finally comes down...I want to lose it before summer.

I'll let you know..

PS: this thread opened my eyes and made me talk to my husband.....and he agreed to a vasectomy !YAYYYY

so thanks ladies

i have the copper iud i think it has a side affect to the body accepting it . my body can't handle all the fluid i have retained . I ALWAYS feel bloated , after having 5 kids i gained weight of coarse but always had a flat stomach, now i dont even know how to get rid of the bloating . for the person who said that it should not affect the body thats bull. If you know something is wrong its wrong , maybe the body cant get adjusted to it and thats the reaction . hormone or no hormone.

Uhha. I don't mean to seem disrespectful, but for years I was told that I was not having cramps because of my periods. I was told that they were all in my head.

Check your basic rules of scientific investigation: 1) The null hypothesis is not verifiable. Ergo, just because weight gain shouldn't happen based on what we know about doesn't mean it doesn't happen because of something we don't know about. The reality is that the medical community isn't even sure why the Perigard works in the first place. So, rather than discounting the experience of so many women because medical science doesn't see a link between the IUD and weight gain, perhaps the medical community should ask themselves if there is a small possibility that there is a link and investigate what it might be. Who knows, along the way they might discover why Perigard works.
GayleM wrote:
Weight gain should NOT happen with the Copper IUD (paragard). Check your menus ladies!
The Paragard is hormone free unlike the Mirena which contains progesterone (known to cause weight gain), if you are experiencing weight gain with the Paragard it's merely coincidence. Ask your health care professional and check out your caloric intake!!

Ok, I just came back from the doctor and had my IUD removed... I do not feel any difference yet. However, I will post in a month or two to report any changes in my weight or libido.
It would be nice if everyone could come back and post their post IUD experiences... I was disappointed that many people complained but not too many wrote back about what happened when IUD was removed.
