Hi Tammy, my Mirena has been in since 18th October, the period stopped, I had very light bleeding for a few days, and the last few days up to my period, which started today, were clear. I have come on exactly 28 days after the last period started, which must be a miracle. A bit of back pain/stomach ache a couple of days ago but very light today (only the first day too!). Have read what seems like millions of horror stories on another website re: Mirena but am also reading some good ones. I hope that in the next few months I am in the positive category and will keep it. I will try anything to stop being a hormonal monster for the majority of the month ... alternatively, perhaps I'm just a natural bitch ... tee hee!

Hi Tammy, Period lasted a couple of days longer than normal and a bit of spotting since but no pain. As last weekend I had the "hormonal monster" attitude I'm hoping it'll wear off! Just seen Doc today to tell him how I'm getting on and told him that about 50% of the internet ladies think Mirena is the best thing since sliced bread and 50% wished they'd never heard of it. He reckons all the ladies he's recommended it to have been happy with it. So, overall, fingers still crossed and looking forward to better months ahead.

I've had my IUD for two years now and have never been able to feel the strings on my IUD. At six weeks I went back and the doctor could see them but the IUD must have shifted because the next time they weren't visible. When I went in for my first annual checkup they did an ultrasound to make sure it was placed properly and said everything was fine. So I haven't worried about it.

Thank you so much for this posting! I just got my IUD 2 days ago, and I have been a little apprehensive about checking for the strings...that can be a little challenging. It is good to know that they are not particularly easy to find, I thought mine had already come out! Does anyone have any suggestions about the first month using an IUD and back up birth control? I would like to know if I should keep on BC pill for one month to be on the safe side.

Jess,
I wouldn't stay on the BCPill as well as the mirena, that would be like doubling up on your hormones! If your mirena was fitted at the correct time (i.e. during the first few days of your period) you will be protected. Had my coil since 18th October and still can't find strings. I had a check up on 13th Dec and the Doctor couldn't find them either but told me to keep checking periodically. The strings have tucked themselves up but that's fine. I know it's there because of how my body is reacting (i.e. light spotting, etc). If in any doubt, go back to your GP or Nurse. Good Luck!

I had my coil fitted early in september, I had terrible problems finding the strings ar first but now I only check during my period or towards the end or, sometimes, just after my period has finished. My GP told me that during your period your cervix is slightly lower and it makes them much easier to find, I would definitely agree with this, now I don`t bother at any other time of the month, it was just to stressful, good luck.

Have had mirena since 1/06, had a baby 11/05, and so far i thought i loved it....except for what i have possibly been mistaken as post partum depression may really be from this birth control i thought was so awesome and bragged about,i mean come on, NO PERIODS!! Well i also have no sex drive(so whats the point of having it!),mood swings, horrible hot flashes(i just turned 26!),and short term memory loss. After 2 different antideppresants which no history of deppresion, and today started getting lightheaded i couldn't take it ANYMORE. i went to my Dr office and seen a Dr i havent seen yet and basically gave him a run down of the last year. He is running labs that i wanted ran in may when i was in for hotflashes and hair loss. If they come back within normal limits this device will come out ASAP! I should know by mon so i will post the results. for those of you with the mirena for over a year and love it that is awesome and i hope it stays that way for you.

MIRENA HELL!
Ladies, I went Friday 2/19/07 to get it removed after less than 2 years of use and they could NOT get it out!! Long story short, I was on teh table for almost an hour, she numbed me 1/2 way through, I was shaking-sweating-crying, and ultimately did an ultrasound to make sure it was in a certain place. I'm tenatively scheduled for general anesthesia surgery to get it removed on 2/16/07. In the meantime, I'm exploring all my options and posting everywhere possible for feedback. It's been emotionally and physically traumatic!

I have had this in 4 7weeks and it is racking my life, I have a 13 year old daughter who has seen me crying, very moody, depressed, and in pain this has also affected my marriage as my husband cant do a thing right, my work, as I have a high stress job I have cried in my workplace.Everything and everyone are getting on top of me. I have been told that it should settle in three to six months, by which time I will have no job, friends and a confused daughter. What damage is this causing her? I feel trained, what should I do? It was put in because of heavy painful peroids.

I haven't had my period since Sept. of 2006. Where I didn't think too much of it since I was moving and starting a new job, then buying a house, and getting day care and school.. everything was a mess for months. Stress right? Well I have started having really bad cramps and now I will pass blood clots as well. I don't know what to think. reading online is always a bad thing to do and of course I sat at work and did just that. Also, I have had an iud prior about 3 years ago after my son was born and then had another one put in after my daughter. I know the side affects and none of this is really anything I have experienced before.
Thanks

Hi Ladies,
My Mirena, fitted 18th October is still in there; well I think it is, the strings are a nightmare to find! Seriously, I know it's there because of how my periods are. I am still turning into the "bitch from hell" a day or so before I'm due but its getting better. My periods over last 4 months have been a bit strange; longer than usual but very very light. Hopefully they will stop in a couple of months. I wanted this IUD because of the hormones to try and balance them (and me) a bit. No other unpleasant effects though. My weight is constant as before. There seem to be a lot of people out there that Mirena doesn't suit, but hopefully there's an equal amount that it's right for. Persevere I say! Good Luck all.

Just checking in to see how everyone's doing. I've had my Paraguard since August'06. The extremely heavy periods have gotten better. My strings were cut very short but I am now able to locate them without too much difficulty. I still feel that I made a good choice. I have persevered!

I am going to get my IUD (Mirena) out probably this June so I can start having my last child. The last time I went to get my checkup the doctor couldn't find the string and had to do an ultrasound. I am nervous that I might have to go to surgery to get it removed also. I know I will have to look at other options after the last child because I don't want to take this risk again.

So everyone,
I went to have my IUD removed today, only to find out that my strings were cut too short. So, I was referred to an OB (I see a family doctor now). Where I have to have my cervix numbed so the doctor can fish to get my IUD removed. Always make sure that the doctore leaves your string long!

I have had my Mirena IUD since May 2002. I am going on Apr 30 to have it removed and I am a nervous wreck because my strings are very short too. I just googled short IUD strings and foud this thread. I have had to have 4 ultrasounds in the past to verify proper placement because even my GYN could not feel the strings. So I am very worried about having it removed. Good luck to all of you and cross your fingers for me!!

Michelle,

Have you seen your doctor recently? The bleeding should have gotten better after the first few months. And your gyn should have told you that if you can't locate your threads, you should make an appointment to be checked. Please, go and see your dr ASAP!
