I got a copper IUD inserted about 6 months ago... and it was not a good experience! Before the IUD my periods were light to moderate bleeding with mild cramping on only the first few hours of having my period and my sex drive was great. After the IUD insertion everything changed... I would feel very painful cramping sometimes 2 days prior to my period and during my period I would be in such agony I would have to sit down. The bleeding was so intense when I went toilet it was like I was haemorrhaging it was horrific. I could not control the bleeding, I was out one day waiting for the bus as I usually would with a new super tampon in within half an hour I felt dripping and wetness I looked down to see blood all between my legs through my pants I felt like crying! I had to call my partner and make him leave work to take me home, This happened more than once. My sex drive was also affected, me and my partner used to have sex nearly every night of the week and now it is only once a week if heís lucky and even that is a huge chore.. itís really not nice at all. I got my IUD removed a week ago and got my first period since on my birthday... and I know itís sad but it was the best birthday present to have A NORMAL PEROID with no pain and normal bleeding! Will be interesting to see how my sex drive goes afterwards!

Please post experiences - positive and negative

I had my Paragard inserted in August 2010 and I will say it has not been a pleasant experience. I am 24, NP, committed relationship. I wanted the IUD bc it was hormone free. Insertion for me, was quite painful. Had the day off and spent it curled in a ball in my head trying to pass out to lessen the pain of my cramping. For about the first 6-8 months I had constant spotting, and horrible cramping. The spotting was so bad I daily had to wear panty liners and I might as well have been wearing a tampon. The discharge put quite the damper on my sex life, nothing like feeling disgusting while trying to be sexy. As soon as I thought the spotting let up I found myself with insanly heavy period, anything less then an Ultra sized tampon will have me switching them out every hour because they will be completely absorbed. Over the course of my paragard being in I have also noticed my hair thinning out on my head and I've put on about 15-20lbs. I am constantly bloated and feeling like I'm filled with water weight. I thought things would get better but it just seems to be one thing after the other. Most Drs will say it doesn't have hormones so it can't cause the symptoms but I highly advice anyone considering the IUD to really research. There are TONS of threads and blogs from hundreds of women with experiences just like my own. Had I know hair loss was a possible side effects and that I would be stuck hunting down ultra sized tampons and wishing they made even bigger ones I would have never done it! I am going to make an appointment to have it removed before the months end. I will repost after it's been out to fill everyone in.

I got the paraguard copper IUD 6 years go. The first 5 years were actually good. The insertion hurt a little but the dr. gave me some pain meds before hand and talked me through the procedure with ease. Some cramping after but nothing horrific. I have a high pain tolerance, and gave birth to my kids without pain meds - Everything seemed okay until I got my period.. I bled like I was having a miscarriage.. it was so bad.. and the periods were like that every time for the last 5 years and did not get better the worst cramps, migraines and bleeding you will ever experience.. Also, the "Strings" of the IUD sometimes rubbed my husbands penis causing him to have scratches on it, and if he would try to penetrate "too deep" it would cause and very sharp pain that I never had before while having sex with him. This was a regular occurrence over the last 5 years, but nothing I couldn't live with because I was adamant, I want no more children. Unfortunately, this last year with the Paraguard IUD has been horrible..every single time my husband and I have sex, rough or gentle I cramp severely... I can hardly walk - this has been getting worse and worse for the last 6 months. The cramps are constant throughout the month and it feels almost as if my body is trying to push out the IUD at all times. The bleeding is awful, more than one tampon every 1/2 hour..during my periods and with cramps 24/7 you can only imagine my moods... I finally got fed up and made an appt with the ob/gyn and explained to her my issues. The nurse at the office was very sweet, telling me that sometimes the IUD will slip down to the cervix and cause great pain, and reassured me that I should probably consider removal. The doctor comes in and immediately begins badgering me about why I want to get the IUD removed, even stating "It's not like it's a semi truck in there, there is no way that the little IUD could be causing all of your cramping and pains" She gave me a pelvic exam after trying to tell me I was crazy for thinking that the IUD was to blame and after the exam she still had me in the stirrups and said bluntly, "well, are we taking this out or what" I said yes please, and she gave me no warning, nothing and literally yanked it out of my uterus.. The WORST PAIN ever!!!!(REMEMBER I GAVE BIRTH WITHOUT PAIN MEDICINE) not only was she totally rude to me, even asking me why my husband doesn't just have a vasectomy if we don't want kids, but she ripped the IUD out like it was a bandaid.. I cried and doubled over in pain.. she didnt offer a tissue or anything.. she walked out and said "I'll get you some birth control pills" you can get dressed now.
UGH! I will give updates about how I am feeling with it out but I am convinced that it was the right thing to do!!!

i had a copper iud placed bout 4 or 5 months after my 2nd child in 2008. thought it was the best thing ever besides the common sides effects. aww not bad right. well may 2010 came around and I started having depression, anxiety, panic attacks horrible tension headaches... and I had been under a tremendous amount of stress at that time. so i contribute all this to the stress. it is now dec 2011 and im still going through all this and more... chronic fatigue, muscles and joints ache all over body, hair falling out...etc . and im still thinking its the stress i went through but why am i not improving why do i constantly feel tense? well... a couple of weeks ago i stumbled upon a forum of women who are suffering the exact same symptoms and more and also have the copper iud. so naturally im looking to get thing taken out very soon, but im wondering is there any women that has been through this and knows if you start feeling well after wards and how long does it take before you notice any improvements? the women don't really come back to the forum and say how they are doing after they get it out. im stressing so bad.. any info or tips are greatly appreciated

I had Copper IUD in may 2010 and since then I have always had bad clamps and long heavy periods with migranes that would last between 8 to 10 days, I was also spotting for a long time before my period and had horrible discharge all the time that I had to change a pantyliner at lunch time. A few months later after insertion I felt tired all the time but I thought maybe I needed to keep fit and in sep 11 I decided to exercise even though I did not have any motivation. I also started to have a back pain. Then on the 29 th Nov I started having racing thoughts, started to panic from nowhere. Suddenly within a week I become very fatigue and no motivation. Went to see my GP and when I said to him about the iud he just ignored me and said it was not hormonal and it was not the culprit so on the 6 th Dec 2011 I told him to take it out. A week later I was feeling bloated and my stomach was rumbling and my gp suspected a stomach ulcer and she gave me omerplazole but it was making me worse as I started to have acid reflux, feeling nervous and insomia and 2 weeks later I decide to stop it. On 1st Jan 2012 I went to A&E where the dr did an ECG and blood test all normal and urine test came out that I had a UTI. And I have been on antibiotics for 7 days and now I have just completed the course and I am taking zinc. And I am not having any anxiety, or panic attacks anymore. Hopefully I will continue to recover.

Please take out the iud and give it until ur next period for the excess copper to go before the DR decide to give you prozac.

Its exactly 5 weeks since I removed the copper iud and the fatigue is gone, no more anxiety or panic attacks, the only thing left is feeling nausea and a bit dizzy every morning when I get up and I can now sleep 7 to 8 hours at night without racing thoughts I can say now that I am beginning to feel a little bit like myself even though not 100% but 90% better. My bloods come back fine. Each day I am getting better and thanks to all the women who posted their comments about Copper iud. If u think u are feeling unusual take it out coz I did not think it was the copper iud coz I had it for a 1 1/2 but now I can say it was the culprit.

I had the similar symptoms as Lucy liu after getting a copper IUD inserted. Bleeding irregularly and heavy periods and pain at first. Which I didn't mind at all because I expected it. However 3 months after insertion I started to get really really tired, migraines, feeling nausea/shakey in the mornings, anxious with racing thoughts and very over emotional. Got so bad that I couldn't stop throwing up in the mornings for 2.5 weeks - terrible nausea and had to stop work. Went to Dr's including stomach specialist and was diagnosed with cyclic vommiting syndrome, and presecribed a low dose of a antidepressant. Took the IUD out because suspected it might be the cause however the Doctors didn't think it would be because it wasn't hormonal so shouldn't be doing anything. Will never able to say the IUD was the trigger/cause. When I tracked my periods figured out that i was bleeding 45% of the time that I had the IUD in (over 5 months). Normally for me its 5 days bleeding with a 35 day cycle. Hopefully in a few months I can get off the low-dose antidepressants and see if my body is back to normal.

I had a similar experience to Kiwi. 6 months with a copper iud, intense pain and bleeding the entire time, but I figured it would get better. It didn't. One day I woke up vomiting, and kept on vomiting for two months. I was also diagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome, after being hospitalized and misdiagnosed. The thing I learned is that if your body us telling you something is wrong, you should listen.

I've had one for about a year. Never had any kids. Overall: I definitely recommend it but there are certainly some things to deal with in the beginning.

Putting it in was the worst pain ever -- they don't tell you that measuring your uterus feels just like insertion, so you have to deal with about 8 seconds of pain 2x.(Lucky for me mine expelled instantly and I dealt with it 4x!) For about 2 days I could hardly sit or lie down even on 800mg of ibuprofen. I'm petite and a little bony so any pressure felt like pinching inside. I slept on my knees the first 2 nights so my torso wouldn't be compressed. Walking around helped but I was also very crampy. I nearly had it removed but stuck through it and after a few more days felt decent enough. For about 2 weeks I minimized my walking about -- after a long day of walking around campus I remember one day I had to walk very slowly home so I wouldn't be in pain. The heaviness of these first few periods was really surprising, especially coming from nearly period-free years of birth control pills.

However, each month saw an improvement and after about 6 months my periods were nearly normal. I take it easy because of cramping for one day when it starts. They went from being about 8 days long to 4-5 with pretty average volume. No side-effects I've noticed beyond that. I can hike and walk all day and have sex with no pain. It just took some patience and pain medicine at the beginning to get here. Not having to think about it 29 days of the month for ten years is a huge treat.

Hi Ladies, its now been 9 months since removal, all my puffiness and bloated is gone, I still have anxiety but not as bad only a week before my periods and I would say all in all I am almost 100% normal than before. I had the copper for 1 1/2 year and it has taken me almost a year to start feeling 100%, Apart from zinc and normal Vitamin I did not take anything else for anxiety and yet I can say I feel much much better. Will update you more when I mark exactly 1 year.

I had my iud placed in september07 after having my daughter. Insertion was just a pinch and i was crampy for a couple hours. My periods went from 7 days to 4 days every 28 days and the bleeding was normal. My husband and i recently decided we want to have another baby so i had the iud removed on 11/13/2012. The removal hurt a bit but after i had no cramps no bleeding and my period was still short and light.

Having an iud will be different for everyone dont ignore youre body...if theres a problem it will tell you

It's really a relief that for once I've read about someone not going through those miseries resulting from Mirena IUD. Mostly, from reading in sites like http://www.mirenalawsuit.us , women complain of side effects which may be the result of using the Mirena IUD. May be it was good thing you had it removed at the earliest time.

i just look out my copper iud yesterday after having it for 2 years. Before iud i used to be very active and highly motivated. Since iud i Have seen my health quickly take a doward spin to the point thst waking up in the morning has become a burden. Ive bled buckets and became anaemic. I also developed candida infections, bladder infections, bloating, cramping, constipation, oral infections, anxiety, depression, severe debilitating fatigue and back aches. I have been ill from the week before my periods to the week after my periods( three weeks every month) for the last 6 months and enjoyed only one week relief only togo through it all again. Doctors have found no reason for my agony other than bacterial infection and low iron due to massive blood loss. Im hopeful that taking out the iud will bring much needed relief and restore my health back to normal.I will keep you posted.

yes i did and it was horrible. I had to alter my diet and take antiacids which increased my iron problems. At the end taking it out was the best option for me. It seems to me that if u already have minor issues with anything the iud makes it 100 times worse over time and then u strugle to make the connection.

I had my copper iud taken out in July after 4 years of having it in. Before the iud, my periods lasted 5 days and were heavy and cramps. Not so much change with the iud... The cramps just intensified a little. I missed my period after taking it out for no reason. The next month lasted one day. Since then, it's been 1-2 days and light bleeding. I have been trying to conceive since October with no luck. I am so terrified.... Has anyone else experienced this?

Having a copper IUD may lead to menstrual problems, as it may lead to increased menstrual bleeding or cramps. Sometimes, perforation of the uterus may occur upon the IUD insertion, although this is rare. You may refer at http://www.mirenalawsuit.us/ for more information.
