Can U Feel an IUD?
Feeling for the string

United States

#41 Jun 3, 2011
I had my paragard iud inserted 3 days ago. I tried to feel for the string first time and I couldn't feel it. Second time I had to go all the way up and I felt something like a guitar cord and curled. Shouldnt it be hanging down and not curled? Is this curling normal? Kinda worried. Please reply.-LV671

I have had mirena in for a year or so. And never had a problem but now I cannot feel the strings and I'm paranoid I'm pregnant. I get married in two months and want to enjoy my wedding without a baby bump! Going to call my doctor today because I feel sick and have pain down there.

I just got my Paragard IUD 5 days ago. The insertion wasnt as bad as I expected. I had read alot on the internet (lots of bad stuff on here) so I was prepared for intense pain but all I felt was some weird cramping. I felt a little dizzy upon sitting up afterwards, but it went away quickly. I got it on the last day of my period and I've been spotting a little off and on since the insertion. I feel like I can feel it inside of me though. It's not painful or anything, but I feel a little bloated and there's this pressure down there. I've been bugging out a little because of everything I had read on the internet, so I've been checking the strings ever day. They've been there every time i've checked and I dont feel the iud or anything, but the strings have tucked themselves up around my cervix. The doctor told me that would happen eventually, but i've been trying to figure out if they're the same length still and i cant get them down. Also, the pressure I feel is more on my left side than centered in the middle, is it that normal? I feel like i want to try to get the strings down but I dont want to pull on them and move my iud. And when i try gently to get them down they just swirl around. Am I moving my IUD? How hard do you have to pull on them to move it out of place? How easily does it move out of place?? Could it be spinning inside of me with the strings???? Am I just thinking about this too much????
That totally describes exactly what I'm going through as well. I was not even able to check the strings when I first got it put in because of some medicine I was taking and the nurse showed me with her fingers how long it was going to be. I had a previous notion from research on the diagrams of the paraguard string length, and they were all very short, so I thought that it was only suppose to be about a 1/2 inch to an inch length in total. I had been checking a week later after my medication was finished, and the strings were 2x longer than on the diagrams. That started to freak me out because I didn't know if ,because of the cramps afterward(and the fact that I haven't had any children), that it was slipping out. I then reviewed the "problems with IUDs"and a lot of women were complaining about the length being too short...so what I am deducting from all of this is that my nurse just kept the strings longer, just in case I wanted to cut them shorter in the future.--> I just check them by feeling the tip of the cervex and lightly moving my finger to drag the strings straight, so that I can feel the length. There is no need to pull the strings (like a tampon string). I am still waiting for a call from my nurse to confirm the length that she cut so that I can be more at peace. I hope this helps you, as you have helped shed some light on this for me :)

i got my mirena put in almost 2 weeks ago. it was almost the worst pain i had ever felt gettin it put in. the first day i was nauseated and very thirsty(idk if its normal) but other than that i had no complaints. i didnt bleed til 3 days after it was put in, but only lightly. my husband says he cant feel it during intercourse, but while i was showerin i inserted my index finger not even an inch in and i felt the strings. is this normal? or could it be fallin out? im very worried.

The best thing you can do to put your worries to rest would be to either contact your nurse or just go back to the clinic and have them check the strings out. Mine are aproximately the same length from inserting my finger inside, but you have to see what the nurse cut them at to really determine if that is the length she intended them to be. Also, the cervix raises and falls throughout the menstrual and ovulation cycle and perhaps yours was at a lower position at the time you checked. I had the Paraguard put in , so the side effects are a little different than Mirena. Good luck :)

I got the paragard about 3 weeks ago and I seem to partially regret it every single day. I have never had kids so my poor little cervix was just about traumatized. The insertion was by far the worse vaginal/lower abdomen pain I have ever experienced to date. It was like first-day-of-period cramps on steroids. I spotted for about a week and then finally had sex. I was a little nervous, but bf and I both agree it was the best we've ever had (I don't know how much credit to give to my little copper friend lol). So everything was cool, then I started spotting AGAIN like two days later! Spotting then went to discharge then spotting again. I've spotted so much that when my actual period came again, I didn't know it was even here...that is until I felt the monumental cramps that ensued later that day. My cramps were so bad that I was taking 800 MG Motrin and Tylenol 3 for pain. I had to leave work early and call out the next day. I also get jolts of pain possibly shooting from my uterus to the base of my vagina. It is the most annoying and fist-clenching bout of pain. I am planning to go back to my OB/GYN next week to see what's really up. I have called my doctor's office about 20 times since the procedure to make sure all of this was normal and they say it is. Screw that, this isn't normal. My procedure was $900 (mostly covered by insurance) and I am trying to hold out to see if it gets better, but I don't know if I can deal with the pain and the crazy heavy bleeding I experienced, every month until I'm ready to take this thing out. I was trying to stay away from the hormones, but my own hormones have gone crazy because of this IUD. It is very convenient and effective, but if you haven't given birth before, I do not recommend it. I had to get my cervix dialated before the procedure and get a shot of xylocane (sp?), which was God-awful, which followed with double doses of Motrin and prolonged use of my heating pad (even while sitting at my desk at work). I am seriously considering just getting the shot because this is ridiculous.

They say that in the first 2-3 months there will be spotting and cramping in between periods for Paraguard. It is a little annoying to me, but hey, atleast I'm not going to get pregnant and I don't have to deal with an over-dose of hormones. I think the Paraguard is totally worth it.

I got my the Mirena IUD about 6 hours ago.. 2nd day of my period..And i keep.freaking myself out! I have 1 child and am no wimp.to pain, but the the placement hurt like a mofo! And for about an hour afterwards I had cramps that made me nauseas and dizzy and alot of bleeding..! I hope it goes away soon..But then the went away..and now I feel a stabbing down the re,... The doc said it was the strings that I was feeling. So hopefully that goes away, otherwise have then trimmed in 4 weeks when I get a check up! Im scared,to poop! If it falls out.. That was a waste of money, cuz I will not put it back i n.. If ot falls out once itll do it again! and if bugs me for more then a week, im taking it out, birth control is not worth having ridicuous cramps and bleeding! But so far s o good overall! Just need to stop freaking myself out about it!

well after reading all of these responses i feel kind of like a cheater... i got my Paragard immediately after an abortion a few days ago and i literally DID NOT feel the insertion-(the abortion itself was one of the more painful things i've experienced in my adult life though, so i guess it kind of evens out :P [don't talk to me about the decision my significant other and i jointly made]) but i'm REALLY curious to know how soft the strings will get and how long they'll take to get there.. i remember the doctor letting me feel the strings just before the procedure (whilst i was heavily sedated) and vaguely remember that they felt something similar to twine mixed with dental floss.. and to share my experience, so far all i've had is some light cramping which isn't bothersome at all and spotting that's getting lighter by the day- although i'm not sure whether it's from the procedure or the Paragard. if someone could get back to me with an answer to my little string question i'd really appreciate it ;)

I've had the copper IUD now for about a month. This is actually my second copper IUD and I GOT PREGGO WITH THE FIRST ONE (six months after I had my son)!!! I dislike hormones so much I decided to get it again after I delivered my "IUD baby"... and use extra protection. Unfortunately, my hubby feels the strings and complains about sharp pain. He now avoids intercourse, although he doesn't tell me,(to not make me feel bad).I made an appt. with the o/b hopefully he'll shorten the strings and that'll solve the prob. Overall, I never felt discomfort of any kind...

I had my IUD fitted 4 days ago. It really hurt. I have had a bit of spotting and some slight but unrelenting period pains. I cant find the strings, I have had a good dig around.. and thought I could feel them once but I am unsure. My boyfriend couldnt feel them last night when we has sex for the first time. A bit worried. Will probs wait for after my next period to go back to the drs again. I dont want them messing with my cervix again in a hurry!!!!

I just got mirena put in yesterday and I have never had children before. It was fairly uncomfortable and I felt quite painful cramping all day until the next morning. Today I feel fine and have not had any bleeding at all, but I am concerned about how long the strings are. They are so long they poke outside my vagina, pretty sure that's too long....so I shoved them back up inside for now because it's likely going to take forever to get back in to see my gyno to get them cut.
I find the ends of the strings sharp to the touch and I'm kinda worried about having sex and being manually stimulated, my man is totally going to feel the strings. This makes me feel weird, I mean it's not really natural to have a foreign object in your body but it cost $400 so I better get used to it I guess. Won't being fingered possibly pull at the strings or possibly pull out the iud?
