i was taking 800 mg of ibuprofen [at my docs request]and that was doing nothing to ease the pain of what i later found out was 4 cm cyst on my right ovary....never had ANY issues with them before i got the mirena. and after i had to go to the ER because the pain was that bad i got vicodin. so i'm still having issues even now after it's been out since may.

OK im hoping someone can help me here.....I got the MIRENA IUD (The one that lasts 5 years) inserted last November...so 10 months ago. It didnt hurt at all when she put it in...little crap for the next day or two. No big deal....About 3 weeks later i started spotting...lasted about4-5 weeks...not everyday, but completely sparatic. Then it just stopped...nothing, no periods...slight crapping and moodiness when it was "that time of the month" but for about 3-4 months I had NO periods. I thought "WOW, this is great!!" Then i got my first real period. HEAVY...lasted about 3 days. Same time next month, same thing...heavy and 3 days. Called the doctor, she said it was fine and normal. Ok, next month, little bit lighter, but lasted like 5-6 days. Next month, again medium flow, but5 this time it lated 2 weeks!!! Medium the forst few days and good spotting for the rest. 2WEEKS after the spotting stopped i got the same damn thing again!! This has been going on for teh past 3 months... its like i am getting my period every 2 weeks! And now, my craps are WORSE than they have EVER been!! Its about "that time" and i am so moody, my boobs kinda huirt, i wasa doubled over in pain last night from back and stomach craps nad the worst part,....I LOOK 5 MONTHS PREGNANT!!! WTF?!?! Still no bleeding...but how can things change so drasticly in 10 months. My doctor swore things would get better, not worse!! I hate BC pills...i already have 3 kids and the reason number 3 is here is because i am horrible at remembering to take my damn pills! Im going to call my old doctor Monday (problem is that we moved out of state and i have no fnd a new doctor now) Any ideas what could be going on? IS THIS NORMAL? Some mentioned that maybe it is falling out or shifted?? If that happens, what are the chances of getting pregnant? Because i swear that is how i feel!!!

Thanks!

I've had the Mirena for two years. Insertion was somewhat painful, I bled for a few weeks but then my usually heavy periods stopped. I now spot if anything. The negatives for me are no sex drive, bad mood swings and previous joint pain- but the doctor didn't warn me about these symptoms. To save my relationship I'm going to get it removed.
this is exactly what i would say in a post. to a T

I got merina out on wed, 4 ays ago, I didn't start bleeding until Fri, not to bad of cramps, but a little. I am bleeding probably heavier than I ever have before, but it feels great, all the bloating, huge stomach thing everyone is talking about, seems to be flowing right on out of me, this pressure relief is as good as that final push, while giving birth!!!! Getting that thing out, best thing I ever did. I feel like a person again, YEAH!

Just a note about the blood clots; if you were on bed rest, that is where that came from. The blood wells up in your uterus because you're not moving around upright, and when it pools up, it clots. I know because I was on the patch, ortho evra, and it gave me blood clots in both my lungs. While in the hospital for SIX DAYS (I'm on the Mirena and it's much better than getting pulonary emboli from the patch!), I got a heavy period because I had just taken the patch off in the ER and I was also on blood thinners. When I started getting HUGE clots with my bleeding (think LARGE potatoes), it scared me, but then my GYN explained the bed rest aspect.

I just wanted to clear the confusion that the clots were from the IUD alone; it was the bleeding and the bed rest that did it.

Iíve had Mirena for 2 years and loved it most of the time. I recommended it to everyone I know and even now think it is the best BC ever. Although after reading the forum I do notice that some of the listed symptoms appear familiar. Like very oily face and hair, and moodiness, and almost constant spotting. Although no cramps whatsoever!(I had bad cramps during my periods before IUD). I went to the doctor and she referred for an ultrasound to eliminate ovarian cyst. I am scheduled for one in one month. Now I know that a lot of women get them using Mirena. I had no idea.

I had gotten the Mirena IUD a little over 3 weeks ago...it didn't hurt going in at all...i had very little cramping afterwards. The only bad part is that i have been bleeding everyday since i got it. It's like i just had a baby and now i am still unable to have sex because of the bleeding...i hope it stops soon....i would recommend getting it though...it seems that everyone has a different experience with it...you might not get the bleeding i had...you never know...

I had Mirena placed almost 3 months ago. Ever since it was put in, my boyfriend has major irritation after sex and I also feel somewhat pain inside after sex. I had the string cut shorter, but it hasn't helped. Has anyone else had this problem? I feel awful for my boyfriend!

The longer you have it in the softer the strings will become, so your boyfriend may have some relief that way. As for you, if the pain is in your uterus, not in your vagina, then it will probably continue. In certain positions... it hurt like hell for me(my hubby is not a small man,if ya know what I mean) I ended up having it removed after@ 10 months; after we finished having sex the first time since removal, I told him, getting it out, was the best thing we ever had done. It was the first comfortable sex we had since our 2nd child was conceived.
I'd give it alittle while longer, but if sex isn't fun, find a new B/C. Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to the doctor again next week. The doctor I saw about a month ago was a jerk and almost implied that I was lying about the string irritating my boyfriend. The doctor was like "A lot of men may like to think the string is bothering them, but it's highly unlikely that he would be 'reaching' it to get irritated by it. It really annoyed me!

i had mine for 4 months my bf never felt anything and neither have I. I just worry he can push it up or make it move, my cervix is low maybe your stings need to be cut shorter , mines are very short i can barely feel them.

Time for a new Dr. How the hell is someone like that ever going to do what is best for you? I'd complain!! It took sometime for me to find the right Dr. But I'll drive 45 min to see mine, he's the best.

I haven't read all the comments, but wanted to chime in. I got the merina put in about a month ago. Had my period right after (on schedule) and have just been spotting ever since. Just annoying. Little cramping upon insertion (I have had 4 children) took some ibuprof and was fine after that. No more cramping. Maybe a little acne, nothing out of the ordinary for me. The spotting is a nuisance, but I am going for the no period at all benefit. As for the earlier post about the increase in periods, and increase in duration, it sounds as though it may be displaced, fallen maybe, or just not in the right position. I would have it checked asap, seeing how you didn't seem to have much trouble in the beginning. Not everyone will have the same reaction, just like not everyone has the same reaction to any one kind of med out there. It just may not work for everybody. I for one believe it is worth a try if for nothing else, to not have a period extended periods of time! No mood swings for me, just the expense of pantiliners! Good luck everyone!!!

I have had the Mirina IUD for almost 3 months and feel horrible. Mood swings, have already gained 10 lbs. Just recently I've had bouts of itching all over my body. Has anyone else noticed itching??? I also have joint pain, I don't know if this is related to the IUD.

Joint pain is one of the side effects I have read about, but didn't have. If you google "merina and joint pain", you'll probably find others who have experinced the same.

Well just a quick update....the bleeding finally stopped...THANK GOODNESS for the Nuvaring. I've had about 2 days of very light spotting since I started using it. I surely do NOT miss the mirena!! I finally feel that I am on the right track, and I feel more like myself. YAY!!

And my hubby could most def. feel the strings...he was poked by them numerous times...haven't noticed him complain about the ring...haven't asked either...lol

I realize I'm probably too late in posting this for Squirrely4, but I wanted to kick in my two cents...
I had the Mirena IUD inserted immediately after an abortion, so I was still under the laughing gas and luckily didn't have to feel a thing. Besides the expected post-abortion bleeding (about 6 days, medium flow), I haven't had a drop since...that was about 4 months ago. My periods were always super light though, and lasted about 2-3 days, so I don't know if that affects your experience on Mirena or not.
I'm happy with my choice. I've had no side effects whatsoever, although I have never had any problems of this kind - I've never had PMS or even much period-related cramping. My sex drive hasn't diminished at all.
I've never had kids, but as far as I know there were no problems inserting it (but that's likely because I was dilated already). For anyone else considering IUD insertion post-abortion, I have read that doing it this way can increase your risk of ejecting the IUD spontaneously. So you might want to look into that. But so far, so good.
