I had a very similar experience to most. I usually have a very high pain tolerance, but that insertion a few months ago was hell! It seemed like she took forever, and I almost kicked her in the teeth! What made me angry was that my doctor made the whole thing such a gross understatement. Like the procedure would be nothing, with her knowing I hadn't had a baby. When I went in I didn't even know I was getting the insertion. For some reason I thought I was just getting measured. I didn't even get a chance to take IB Profen or anything. The cramping was so bad afterward I was barely breathing trying to regulate the movement of my stomach, and my boyfriend got real worried and made them call in a prescription for me. Now it is all wonderful except that I get regular cramping similar but much milder in comparison to what it felt like during the procedure, and it hurts to have sex. I get cramps a lot, so my sex drive has fallen. I have to go to the doctor agian (a different one) and get it checked out, which freaks me out.

I have not had a good experience with the Mirena iud. I've had it for almost two years. Besides the initial (but temporary) horrible pain of insertion, the side effects are unbearable and I am scheduled to have it removed. I spotted for four months continuously after it was inserted. I still continue to have my periods, and while they are slightly lighter they now last for TWO WEEKS instead of my usual 7 days. But the worst side effects are depression, massive hair loss, and terrible, persistent fatigue. My memory has been worse as well. But I do have a friend who used to have extremely heavy periods (VERY heavy) and due to having migraines she can't take oral bc pills-- and she loves the Mirena. So I suppose it all just depends. Unfortunately for me I am one of the 5% who have the yucky side effects. Hope this info helps.

I've had my Mirena for 7 months. The reason; endometriosis, wicked cramps without birth control pills, and I've had 2 kids so I'm a candidate, last kick at the cat to attempt to control the cramps otherwise I'm looking at hystectomy. Well, the insertion was easy but I had one child vaginally. My sister had two kids via caesarean, and the Mirena insertion hurt her. I've been spotting since the initial insertion, irregular periods (but much lighter than without the Mirena). Before Mirena, I would get bent-over-with-pain cramps which caused me to take large doses of muscle relaxant medication....the result, an ulcer. MIRENA STOPPED THE PAIN....I GET NONE. I do get mood swings which I call my "Mirena" days - I get very angry or cranky....so I exercise to combat that feeling and it subsides in about a day or two. Lately I bleed after sex for about week or more and I'm having abdominal cramping all the time. Going to the doctor to try to resolve this issue, if possible. I'll let you know. Posted for your information.

Oh girl! I am so with you on this one! I am getting mine out tomorrow! I have tried and tried to tell my doctor that this thing is giving me problems, but he insists that it cannot be the iud! I now have cysts on my overies. I am probably the happiest person you'll ever meet and I have never been more depressed in my life! I don't feel like I can handle anything anymore! I always feel pregnant! I look like a fifteen year old girl because of the achney! I have grown facial hair! You are so not alone! Good luck convincing your doc of anything though.

My question is that everything I have read about ovarian cysts says that they go away within a few menstural cycles, but I am not getting my period so what happens then? Do they not go away? I have had 3 ultrasounds and each time the cyst gets bigger but the doctor insists it will go away on its own. I asked if it was related to the IUD and he said it wasn't but really wouldn't explain anything. I am so confused and frustrated because I am in so much pain and he is not doing anything for me. Has anyone had an experience like this? I would appreciate any info that anyone has.

Well I got my Mirena out on May 30th of 07 and I also have a 4 cm cyst. I asked my doc about it and she said that we get cysts every cycle and they will usually pop or just go away. I too was in so much pain and all they would tell me was to take ibuprofen [so didn't work] but after she realized what was going on I got vicodin [YAY!] She is putting me on a different BC [nuva ring] and she hopes that the hormones not being oral will help keep the cysts at bay.

I also had bad mood swings while I had the Mirena...we just didn't mesh well together. I can't wait for everything to get back on track...I'm tired of keeping Tampax's stock way up...lol.

I just had my Mirena removed today after 2-1/2 years. I am 30 years old and do not have any children. I chose the Mirena after having problems with over 5 different types of pills (sensitivity to hormones). In the beginning, I thought Mirena was a blessing and the answer to all of my problems. Around the time I got the Mirena (Dec. 04), I also started Weight Watchers and lost almost 20 pounds from February 05 through May 05 and went from approx. 172 to 152 lbs. Around May 05, I plateaued at 152 and couldn't lose any more weight, no matter what I tried. At that time, I started going off WW and my workout routine wasn't as regular as it had been. Even so, I was able to keep most of the weight off for about a year and a half. Then, about 8 or 9 months ago (at about my 2-year mark), I was up to about 165. I decided to start working out again and to watch what I was eating. One month later, I was up to 170 and a few months after that, 174. I have really kicked it into high gear over these past 304 months and I'm stuck at 170-172 and can't lose weight no matter what I do. I have been watching what I eat, working out for 1-1.2 hours each day, and under doctor's advice, been adding weight training (I currently go to Curves for 45 minutes, do a weight training video and water aerobics) and she also prescribed Phentermine. Nothing is working. After doing a lot of research on the Mirena, I have reserved myself to the fact that it is the cause of my problems. In addition to the inability to lose weight, I have found that my body shape has changed and I'm carrying my weight in my abdomen, hips, and thighs now. I also look swollen in recent photos, to where it appears I look uncomfortable in my own skin. Over the past few years, I've also experienced changes in my skin texture (with cystic breakouts on my chin), borderline-high blood pressure, headaches, excessive sweating, oily skin and hair, and an unnatural craving for sweets/chocolate. I never made the connection and just assumed that my body was changing as I got older. I even had blood tests to check my thyroid, which came back normal. After reading many of the posts in this forum, I started recognizing syptoms that everyone talked about and realized that they were the same as mine. I made my appointment last week and had the Mirena removed today. I am going BC-free for a few months, to see if my body will regulate itself and my hormone levels. I will also be working hard at losing weight and working out, to see if I start noticing a change on the scale. My doctor told me that he would be happy to do whatever I wanted, but that it was unlikely that Mirena was the cause. I figured that he would say that based on what I've read. I told him that I want to start from square one to see if, by chance, it was the source of the problems. If not, then, I'd look into additional tests, etc. I sure hope I'm on the road to recovery!!!!

at first i thought my iud was going to be the magical cure...i would not have to worry about a thing with this but was i wrong. about a month after having my iud i tested positive for group b strep wich is a bacteria that lives in the body normally but can be agitated do to tramatic events, (hence inserting a foreign object into the body). the symptoms were horrible and an annoyance after the first treatment of antibiotics did not work i began to consistantly spot. my iud was retaining the bacterial infection. i had my iud for a grand total of six months. it was not worth the cramping, the longer period or the continual spotting.

I had the IUD put in nearly two years ago. Had some cramping at first but have been fine. Get a very light period every month. Don't experience anything....don't even know when my period is coming. The period is so light I probably wouldn't have to wear anything. Try it and see how you go.

I have had the mirena almost two years and would not recommend it. Insertion wasn't bad but have developed constant cystic acne which is painful, also have very oily hair and it is now falling out. I've been very moody as well. I'm having it removed soon.

My hair has also been falling out, I'm not quite bald, but I'm not gonna wait to see if it all falls out. I found a lot of people on line that said this also happened to them. I have an appt to have it removed tomorrow. Moody is an understatement in my case.

The entire time i had the iud in i felt too big for my skin, igot it out today, and already feel better. Since your period has changed and you feel more bloated, I would go get checked, there are a lot of people that get cysts, maybe that is what is happening to you. I had a little one, then one night during sex i had excruciating pain, I went in the next day bedcause I started spoting, Dr said my husband had ruptured it, and I would expell it through the bleeding. Just another reason I got it out!!!Remember you know your body best, if you are concerned enough to post it, you may want to get it checked out. Good Luck!!1

I went to my gyno to get my tubes tied and he suggested the Mirena IUD which I ended up getting installed on July 18, 2007. It was painful to me having the IUD installed but my doctor was really good about it he gave me pain killer to take an hour before the procedure and told me step by step what he was doing during the procedure. After the procedure I began spotting right away but I stopped a few days later. I also felt like I had just had a baby for the the first 24hrs after insertion. Now I feel great, less moody, no cramping and lighter periods. Although my period is light I got my first real period on July 28, 2007 it stopped on August 4, 2007 and then came back on August 6, 2007 and although it is light, it seems like my period is not stopping. I'm hoping it stops soon and so is my hubby ;o)
I had spotting for a few months and now it has stopped. I always said I would give it a full 6 months to see what happens. Hopefully you will stop spotting.

I have read that ovarian cysts can increase after the insertion of the IUD. I had some small cysts prior to the IUD insertion and I have only had a couple of occassions when I felt the cysts. I would recommend 600 mg of Ibuprofen. Your OBGYN can call in a rx for you. The 600 mg Ibuprofen really works to get rid of the pain. Good luck.
