I had Mirena put in yesterday and I honestly have to say it was the worst decision of my life. I understand everyone is different but I will never do anything like this again. After putting it in, I have felt nothing but strong cramps and after taking over 1500 mg ibprofen I dont see where there is anything else I can do but get it removed. My next appt is in 2 weeks for the ultrasound to make sure it was inserted right, but I will def be getting it out instead.
Not to mention I think I was highly mislead into getting it. I was going to try the one that goes into your arm, but my doctors office decided that I try this one. I'm only 20, and have no kids.
It is normal to feel discomfort for the first few days. It actually took me a good 2 months to feel completely fine. After all the cramps and spotting, i now have NO problems. It's worth waiting it out, trust me. Yes everyone is different but i just wanted you to know that you will feel pain for the first little while because the IUD has to adjust itself. And if you do wait it out, you will eventually have NO PERIOD!

How long have you had it in??
Yes, I believe it can move some or Readjust.

You might want to go have it checked by your OBgyn.

I had the Mirena inserted 6 months ago. It was very painful and I nearly fainted. I bleed for a good 6 weeks afterward. My periods have been easier with less cramping. They have gone from heavy, to light and now I haven't had one in over 8 weeks. But boy, are my breast sore and swollen. Has anyone had this experience? I feel weird not having a period. And I can't stand my breast hurting all the time.
I have experience some breast sensitivity and a swollen feeling at times. I have had my mirena for two years now but this feeling didnt occur till early this year. I asked my Dr. about this sensitivity and she said that your body is just noticing that you havent had a period and it acts like that it "thinks" Your pregnant. But with the superior effectivness of this type of B/C...you are not pregers. I seem to experience this swollen/sensitivity about once every couple months or so. hope this helped you!--oh and the feeling will go away...hopefully it isnt too terrible to live through.

I've had the Mirena for nearly 4 years and have been a big advocate for it. They did have a little trouble during insertion and I did bleed a lot during the process but other than that I haven't had any issues or side effects since. Its been great not having to worry about birth control and now my period is next to nothing.

Here's my concern: After 4 years of no problems I started bleeding today very heavily. A dark, crimson color - almost as if someone had sliced my arm open. I had intercourse last night and have been googeling articles all day on bleeding after sex with Mirena. It has me worried that its now slipped or embedded itself and sex has somehow disrupted this.

Concerned. Any thoughts?

I've had the Mirena for almost three years. Initially, I loved it. Very convenient and worry-free. In hindsight, though, I have experienced several of the side effects of Mirena and will be having it removed as soon as possible. My most serious side effect is ovarian cysts. In November of 2008, I had a soccer-ball size cyst rupture, had to be rushed to the hospital, and had an emergency laparoscopy performed. Well, I was in the hospital again today for chest pain (something that preceded my first cyst rupturing), and they found two more 5cm cysts on my left side. I am an otherwise healthy 34-year-old; both of my pregnancies were healty and normal. I have never been as medically fragile until the Mirena became part of my life. I realize these side effects do not affect the majority of users; however, my experience has left me 20 pounds heavier, fatigued, and with the ever-attractive back acne side effect.

I had my 2nd C-Section Janurary 2010. I had the Merena put in at 6 weeks postpartum. It didn't hurt. I did spot a little brown here and there for the first month, I just used panty liners. Ive had 2 periods (march and april)so far that have only been 3 days long and very light bleeding. I do get some cramps but just take some Tylonal. I like it so far! This is coming from the one who use to have the worst periods and the worst reactions to every birth control on the market. I would highly reccomend trying it, you can always take it out.

I have been thinking about getting this. I have done alot of reading and think this will work for me.
I hate having to take the pill every day and forget some times, and when i do take it i have NO sex drive. I mean I was a "wild women" before the pills, but now NOTHING.
I wanted to know how people that have it alread like or dislike it. I know there will be some pain, cramping and bleeding when it gets "installed" but dont know what to expect after that point.
Any info would be good, but positive info would be great. Thanks so much ladies.

I have had mine for 2.5 yrs now and i have just recently been noticing the side effects. Slight weight gain( but i dont really exercise too much), i am moody, sometimes sad/depressed feeling, definatly a huge loss in sex drive and that is not helping my relationship at all. I have finally decided to get the mirena out this friday. I will update the after effects ladies

I am on my third Mirena. The breast swelling/soreness does away. When I got the third one a month ago, it took about two weeks for the soreness to subside. I know some people have mentioned bad side effects, but I've had a great experience with Mirena. I've tried eight different hormone birth controls and this was the first that really worked for me.

Thank you CJay for the advice.
I have now had Mirena for over a month and the strings did soften. Sex feels the same. I spotted until I got my 1st period on it. Then it stopped. I was wondering if you ovulate while on it? I'm getting a mucusy discharge that happens when you ovulate. So now I'm a little confused. Any advice???

I've heard that does happen.
Were you on birth control before the Mirena?? Had a child?
I was on the Depo Shot and had no period and then went on the Mirena -- so I continued not to have a period.( I didn't have one for 15years)

Does anyone get very tender breasts on Mirena? I'm experiencing that along with heat flashes and water retention. I did not have any of these symptoms before Mirena. I've now had it in for almost 2 months. Any advice is appreciated.

So,for me this whole experience with Mirena has been a nightmare!! After having it inserted on Feb of 08,I had very irregular periods, pretty much every other week for the whole 2 years,my hands and legs swell up like crazy,I have gained so much weight,I feel like I am pregnant!! Even as a teenager I never had acne, now I am scrubbing my face two or more times a day with harsh acne washes and astringents and still have horrible breakouts,my hair is so greasy by the end of the day,it looks like I havent washed it in 3 (I wash it daily) I sweat all of the time, like I did when I was pregnant,I am tired all of the time, and I just cannot lose weight at all on it.
So, I finally decide to have it removed after 2 yrs of aggrivation, and well over 40lbs..... The doctor couldnt see the strings,so he decided to just dig for it....not a very good decision, and extremely painful!! After I was literally screaming in pain begging them to stop, they decided to send me for an ultra-sound. They scheduled one to look only in my uterus for placement, and when it came back, they said it was no longer there,it must have just fallen out!! They did not have any answers for any of my side effects, nor any concern!!!
I was unwilling to accept that,a person can tell when something just isnt right. I found a new Dr who did listen and care about my problems and concerns. She scheduled an abdominal ultra-sound and bloodwork. Well, I just had that done 2 days ago,and the ultra-sound tech found it!!! Of course she couldnt officially say that it was the Mirena, but it was a long object....IN MY FALLOPIAN TUBE!!! So now I am waiting for my follow up appointment, and I am extremely grateful that it is found, but what happens now??? Anyone?

I have had my IUD for 5 years and made an appt to get it out April 9th. I have had cramping and pain during sex for the past 3 years or more. I have my first one removed after 3 years bucause I was having stabbing pains and cramps. They said that it had grown into my uterine wall and I though that was why I was getting the pains. I have another one inserted and it has not gotten any better, actually worse I think and I gained even more weight. I think that it is seriously messing with my body and health and cannot WAIT to have it removed.
As for birthcontrol, I am not a little freaked out b/c I have no idea what to use as I have had the IUD in for the past 5 years....
I used the Nuva Ring for 2 yrs before having the Mirena....I never had any problems with it. I would definately not recommend Mirena to anyone, lol!!

I had my second Mirena put in in Nov. 2009. I woke up this past Sun. a.m. and my right breast was swollen, sensitive, and hard as a rock. Ridiculous compared to the size A on the left! This was my mother's day...5 years after my 2nd child....feeling like I was engorged once again! What a gift! Having never had this happen, I was worried, went to urgent care. Dr. gave me antibiotics, assuming it was Mastitis (an infection that one can get, even without breast feeding). The next day, the swelling started to move to the left breast as well. They sent me back to the Dr. She said it could be the Mirena. Shocked, I said, "It's been in since Nov. with no side effects. Why suddenly?" It didn't make sense. She said it's happened to others. They have taken hormone blood tests and are sending me for bilateral mammogram and ultrasound but after reading all the above, I'm starting to think maybe it is the Mirena! I never had a problem with the first Mirena but the Dr. said "every batch is different." And - I have also had terrible headaches at times and can be incredibly moody. This has all been very helpful and I would like to remove this device as I write. But, alas, I will wait for my appointment so I don't break a string and cause more problems for myself. Has anyone ever had just one swollen, sensitive, and hard breast? The only part of this experience that was only slightly amusing was listening to my 7 year old daughter describe the difference between my breasts. Short-lived ammusement.

Hi Lisamarie, I had the Mirena inserted about 2 weeks ago. My period started when it was normally scheduled to begin (about a week ago) and I have been bleeding (heavily at times) off and on since then. I know everyone is different but I'm curious about how long I can expect it to last (mine used to last no more than 3 days). After you had your Mirena inserted and had your first period, did you experience prolonged bleeding? Thanks in advance for sharing!

Hi TraciJackson. I did and still have prolonged bleeding. There was about a week where I had no bleeding. I have an app next week to have it removed. I can't handle the bleeding, soar breasts, water retention, cramps and moodyness. I know everyones experience is different and Mirena wouldn't be around if it worked for no one but I feel it isnt right for me. Good luck to you. I heard that the bleeding usually stops a few months after insertion. Hope it stops for you soon. :)
