I tried the Mirena IUD for at least 4 months. The entire time I had a horrible backache that didn't go away. My doctor told me (when I was getting it removed) that she had only heard similar complaints from one other patient. Neither one of us had ever had children.
I have read that you are not suppose to have Mirena if you haven't had children. You are supposed to have had children and be in a stable relationship. No STD's and all that stuff

Just got the Mirena a week ago, now Im freaking out about all the side effects they dont tell you about...my huge concern is the weight gain. It seems as if everyone is gaining weight on this whereas the pamphlet and my dr. said that you dont gain weight on it...I guess my question is for you how is your workout regimine? Be honest too, are you working out consistently and eating right or just watching what you eat and still gaining weight..I ask this because I work out 6 times a week and Im on weight watchers to get the baby weight off (worked wonders with 1st child) so Im just concerned if Im working out 6x's a week and doing a food program if Im still going to gain weight??

Its hard to really get an idea of everyones weight gain if they arent posting excercise if any or a food plan if any..because I know if I dont excercise and watch calorie intake I too will gain weight

I also wanted to say a positive exp. I had because I keep reading how almost everyone's insertion hurt...

I dont know if my doc is a pro but I didnt even know he was done until he said "okay its in" I was like umm are you sure I was expecting it to hurt?! So for me I felt absolutely nothing during insertion I did however start to shake..my legs which is normal when you mess with the uterus but some very light cramping that day then nothing the next 3 days.

Sat and Sun though I was very dizzy and today I am crampy and having period like bleeding ( I am still breast feeding so I havent gotten my period yet) my breasts are sore and Im crampy but again very mild, also I feel cloudy and anxious...I emailed dr and told him my concerns, I believe I am going to get this thing out just because I dont want to wait and have the weight gain and other issues...hubby and I are talking about him getting a vesectomy he has an appt. next week.

I had the IUD inserted 4 days ago. I have to say it was very painful when it was inserted. After the doctor finished, I could not feel it. I have been having brown blood for the past 4 days and cramping. I have taken 600 mg Ibuprofen, and I still have the cramping. I am going to give it a good 6 months and see what happens.

I've had the Mirena for almost a year now. First time my boyfriend and I had sex after it was put in...he felt it. He said that it felt like a needle was poking him. And that it was really painful. So we had to stop. I called the doctor, and she told me the string will soften up within 3 week to a month. So within that time, we tried again, but same results. It never softened. So, I had the doctor shorten the string...now its way up there. No sign of the string at all. Which is scary...
After almost a year, I'm still spotting...heavier than before. The last 4 months, my face and body has been breaking out...as if I was going through middle school all over again. SUCKS so bad! My discharge is a little heavier also. I'm going in for my annual check up next month, and I am certain that I'm going to request for it to be removed. I am not going through 4 more years of break outs, discharge, heavy spotting, etc. I got the Mirena so it would be easier on me...not to make things worse. It affects everyone differently. I'm so happen to be the one it doesn't like...LOL! Good Luck Ladies!

I just got Mirena yesterday because it's cheaper and simpler in the long run. I have never had a baby and the insertion was excruciating. (I am a tomboy, not a wuss). The 30 minute drive home sucked while I waited for the asprin to kick in, I almost threw up on the passenger floor mat. I have severe cramps all last night. Feeling much better today, just like a slight menstrual cramp. My STRONG recommendation to all childless Mirena prospects is ask your doctor about perscribing you a strong pain killer like Vicodin and a muscle relaxer to help you get over that 1st day pain. It was seriously like the worst menstrual cramps I ever had multiplied by 3. I almost jumped off the table during inserstion. (small Cervix opening). Heating pad helped a lot as did the wine the boyfriend bought me. (good man). In retrospect, I wish I had prepared ahead of time. I've heard women who have had a baby don't experience this. We'll see how it goes. My friend had hers 2 months now and loves it.

Ha!I thought the same thing until i had it 4 a couple of months! Then it gave me every terrible symptom everyone had been talking about.I have viscious mood swings, loss of sex drive, heart pap, chest pains, weight gain(25,lbs),cramps,headache,p anic attacks, swelling in my hands and feet, tenderness of breast, tiredness, severe back pains, and am depressed at times!I have never every had any of these side effects til i had this inserted.I am only 19 and this has turned me into an old women who is always cranky and it is not worth it.The docs will tell u this is not the cause of the side effects but don't be stupid and let them tear up ur body til its 2 late.Get it removed or don't get it put in.It is extremely damaging 2 urself and if u ever want kids in the future this can screw up ur chances and thats not worth this risk.Good luck=D

is bleeding during/after sex a normal effect of Mirena? I've looked on the website but I didn't see that listed...not sure if I need to contact my doctor about that. Otherwise, I've had Mirena for 1.5 years and don't have any complaints...just want to make sure I'm normal :)

new to the post, but i have the paraguard, 2 months now, the insertion was uncomfortable (I have 2 kids who were both vagainal) but not unbearable... no hormones, yay. Was on depa for a while... which as we all know sucked, then nuva ring, which made me gain 20 pounds and gave me random brown spots (bigger than feckles and ugly)on my face, that I cant get rid of (thinking of dermabrasion or laser or something). Then finally got the paraguard because I was sick of putting hormones into my body.

After 2 months I find my period to be really heavy but normal legnth of time and some bad cramping but thats a small price to pay for no hormones screwing with my head, weight and skin. I'm also not used to even having my period as I was doing other bc's for so long, so I could just be spoiled and whiny.

Anyway, just thought I would suggest that for anyone who still wants a worry free IUD, it might work better since its hormone free.
good luck everyone.

I had mirena for the past 6 months with heavy cramping on and off and VERY irregular bleeding. I just went to the MD to have it removed (can't take the cramping anymore) and they couldn't find the strings. After searching more they couldn't find the IUD. They had to do a sonogram to find it. It had moved way up in my uterus. After 30 minutes of PAIN, they finally got it out. Just a little FYI for anyone thinking of trying the mirena.

Hi - I'm going to have the Mirena "installed" next week, after I start my period. My ob/gyn said that being on my period will help make it a breeze to insert. I've read the pamplet and other info repeatedly but now I've found this and I have to say I am really kinda scared. I'm 27, married and I've had one child, 7 yrs ago and thought this would be the perfect solution as I am not sure when I will have another. It seems that everyone is talking about acne, weight gain, lack of sex drive, tons of bleeding for months on end. I've read ALOT of the posts but have seen mostly negative. So if anyone can answer these few questions I'd really appreciate it and any extra input/info would be appreciated - not sure if I'm gonna do it now....
- How long do you have to wait before having sex again? Can it be "knocked" out of place during sex?
- Is it supposed to be NORMAL to have pain and bleeding after sex? If so, how long should you expect to have the pain?
- Aren't you supposed to check the strings after sex to make sure that they are still in their place with the same length etc...kinda to make sure its in the correct position?
- Is there anything the doc can do if you lose your sex drive other than taking it out?(i.e. hormone creams or meds?)
- I've never had an acne problem, for those who have had the acne side effect - Do things like ProActiv or other acne medications clear it up or are you just stuck with pizza face and body?
Sorry so long. I really appreciate the feed back.

I am having the Mirena removed on Thursday. I have expereinced sharp pains in my hands and arms, which the last time I did, I was pregnant. I had the IUD inseretd about a year ago, I had a lot of bleeding but not any cramping. I think that I had regular periods, but they only lasted a few days, and I had next to no cramping. In December of 07, I had a regular period around the 12th. I bled regularly for about four or five days. At the end of the month, I began to spot. In january, I spotted, in February, I spotted. March, no period, April no period. When I got the Mirena a year ago, I undrwent a serious bout of suicidal depression. I didn't know what it was until I started feeling nausuated and missed two months of periods and began dong research. My stomach is so bif, I look pregnant. I'm having it removed on Thursday.

I have been bleeding since december with the mirena with heavy clotting. The doctor keeps saying to give it time. I am going to have it removed next week. It is not helping at all. it was put in to stop abnormal bleeding but it has made it worse.

I got mine in February and I like it. Yeah I cramp here and there and I bleed after sex but if you get past the 2 months of light-heavy bleeding it works! My 7 month old is the product of birth control taken correctly (no antibiotics, no skipped days, same time every day. Woo hoo .3%)

Ps am I the only one who's sex drive skyrocketed? My husband tries to distract me now! I think he can't handle it haha :)

i had the Mirena IUD inserted 2 years ago, all went well. There was not much pain when it was insterted and I never got my peroid after that again until it was removed. My husband and I both noticed a lot of "symptoms" that we feel were associated with the IUD. I was VERY crabby, and would fly off the bat for the smallest thing. I got some cramping with sex, and was very tired all the time. I got the IUD removed a week ago and I have had HEAVY bleeding and blood clots. I am wondering if anyone else had blood lots when theirs was removed?? Some are at least an inch or two big.

I have searched the web for what seems like days on end. I have found thousands of women who have had terrible experiences with this contraption. I didn't think I was having a bad experience until I started thinking back oer my 5 year experience with it. #1 I've gained 40 pounds since having it in. I have exercised, gone to WW, all but starved myself, only to lose 5 pounds and then it gain it right back. #2 I had a dermoid cyst removed a year and a half ago and specifically asked my OBGYN if the IUD had anything to do with it and she assured me it didn't. I tried to get her to take it out and she insisted I keep it in and was even talking to me about how easy it was to insert the next one when I was due for it. I have absolutely loved not having a period over these past 5 years but not at the expence of being obese in another 5 years. I wish I could find someone who has had it out for 6 months, a year, 2 years and tell how they lost the weight they put on but no one seems to be posting about their experience with it after it's removal past 3 months. I think my husband and I have decided that he will get a vasectomy. I hope to be done with taking any type of hormone. Although I'm scared from reading other posts that this Mirena has set me up for menstral problems that I never had before.

I am in a commited relationship and feel this would be the best option for me. Any positive experiences highly appreciated.
