My turn to update. I am thinking of ttc again and need to get my ovarian cysts back under control. I did not want to do BCP since I know they will give me canker sores. My OB recommended the NuvaRing which dispenses the hormones straight into your system without the need for metabolizing the pills. He thinks my liver makes some nasty byproduct... This is my first cycle with it and so far so good... On a couple of occasions I have had the beginning of a sore but it has not been painful and they have not developed into the full mouth ulcer which is GREAT! So, if you want to try something new this would be an option. It's much lower hormonal doses than BCP. I will be on the NuvaRing until April as long as the mouth ulcers don't come back so I will try and update if anything new develops.

I have good news for perhaps some of you :o)

I switched to Yaz after having Acne from OTC, depression even on OTC Lo,and a 23-day period while taking Lutera.

At first, I admit, I was in a funk. I got these TYPE of canker sores called Apthous Ulcers...basically they are canker sores, but they are huge and kind of protrude, and they split. They last from 7-10 days. I could hardly swallow. I also got my first yeast infection EVER during that first month. I thought I had an immune disorder, and no doctor knew what it was.

Now, I love YAZ though. I am three weeks into my second pack, and my skin is glorious. I went completely off an acne antibiotic I had been taking for 6 years, and my skin actually got better. My canker sores have stopped coming back, and my mood has greatly improved. I have a little spotting, but I think that's normal when you switch pill types.

All women's hormone levels at different speeds. If you're on you 1-3 month of Yaz, give it a couple more before calling it quits. I'll keep you posted.

I started Loestrin 24 Fe last month and got a sore on my tongue in the first week and have had at least 2 of them at the same time for a month strait. Along with that I had 3 canker sores. The Dr. told me there is no way they are related. I decided to go off bc for a bit to see if they are related, or if i am crazy. Those were the only problems I had, any suggestions about what questions to ask the Dr. or if I should have stayed on it longer?

I used to get sores in my mouth on ortho tri-cyclen lo, especially in my throat and my insides of my lips. They hurt really bad and lasts awhile. I only got them on a certain week on my pack. After awhile, they went away but they drove me nuts while I had them. I had no clue what it was until I kept track of when I was getting them and it was always the same week of my pills.

So nice to hear I'm not alone!! I have never had canker sores in my life until recently. I was on the depo. shot for a year and that had all kinds of side effects, so I swiched to the Nuva Ring. Within 2 weeks I hade a sore later I found out it was a canker sore. I researched and found that they are sometimes triggerd by hormones and wonderd if it was my new BC. The depo shot takes away hormones and The Ring adds hormones so... I was thinking thats why I got this canker sore. Since then I just got anothar one 3 months later. Tha Nuva Ring had so many bad side effects in the first 3 months, they have since stopped. But these canker sores are the worst! I hope they go away, its so hard to find a good form of Birth contol. It was so good to hear that other women go through the same thing as me! wish you all luck!

Wow, there seems to be a re-occuring theme here. Anyone on Ortho-lo or Yaz are getting canker sores. I have had the sores on and off for years and I had someone mention that birth control can cause it, but I kind of blew that comment off, but from all of these posts, there is obviously a connection. I have 3 large sores that are rubbing on my teeth this week, worse than I've ever had them before. I was off of the pill for a month and am now back on Ortho-lo and bam, canker sores!

I just started a generic brand of tricyclen-lo it is called Tri-Sprintec and this whole week I have had one cold sore after another, horrifying acne, hot flashes to the point where I cannot cool down even in 40 degree weather, headaches, and probably weight gain. I have been on BC before and did not have these problems (except a little weight gain) so I thought BC was okay to take and worth it instead of the risks like stroke, heart attack etc. Never have I had acne! I look like I have measles. It is so frustrating to have these side effects this first week because I want to quit but I don't know if they will go away or not. I don't know if it just takes time for my body to get used to these hormone or what. It sounds like these symptoms do not go away for most people while on BC for a while. As mush as the sores occur in women you would think it would be one of the side effects listed on the insert!

I have been on YAZ for 6 months and I'm experiencing horrible side effects. During the first month, my body would get extremely hot and I would itch all over, and I had to use an ice pack to help ease the discomfort. Furthermore, within the first month i broke out in 4 huge cold sores all at once, above and below my lips. I have been getting about 2 cold sores every month since, without fail. I have nausea and get car sick quite frequently. I have talked to my Dr and he said that YAZ DOES NOT cause these problems. Well, obiously it does becuase I'm having symptoms! I thought I was alone but after reading all of the other posts, I am positive my symptoms are from YAZ. Thank you so much for posting your issues! It really helped. I am going to stop takig BC immediately and pray that my symptoms clear up.

I have noticed a HUGE difference. I was on Orthotri, for about a year, and was getting canker sores constantly, and I couldn't figure out why. I am in the military, and last year I was deployed for 6 months. I decided while I was there to stop taking the pill, because there was obviously no need, and the sores almost completly stopped. I had only 1-2 in the entire 6 months. When I got back I started back on the pill, this time YAZ, and I got one sore after another, and to top that off, I had absolutly NO sex drive. Finally I told my finacee that I was done with the pill. No sooner than I stopped taking it the sores stopped to. For 2 months now I have been off the pill, until about a week ago I decided to try it one more time. That was until yesterday I felt that all to familiar painful feeling in my lip. That pill pack was in the trash this morning before I left for work.

I would like to know if anyone who stopped taking BC also noticed a decrease in canker sores. I also suffer from canker sores. They went away for a couple years while I was pregnant and nursing, but as soon as I started on BC again the canker sores started again. I am on Loestrin FE.

WOW!!!!! I have been plagued for about 3 yrs. now w/severe canker sores.....after EVERY possible doctor[derm, allergist, ear nose throat, gastro etc....]and blood work, food elimination, cutting sodium laurel sulfate out, antibiotics, LOTS of antibiotics-by process of elimination, I thought just MAYBE Yaz may have it's dirty little fingers in the pot. Huh.....looks like i may be right. Canker sores are genetic, and I have gotten them since I was a child...but, NEVER have I had massive holes in my tongue and throat and all over mouth like the last 6 months. SINCE Early Dec 07' to present May 08' they have been constant. No relief, they have affected my daily habits, and robbed my sex life w/ my husband. Tonight was my last yaz pill by choice. In the hopes these sores will subside. I feel they may continue a bit, because I think there are other issues going on as well. But, the severity hopefully will drastically improve. I was only on Yaz for PMS. Tubes are tied after 3 babies, so now I will need a mood stabilizer for pms! Any suggestions, possible homeopathic? Thanks! P.S. I also thought my high mileage w/ training for marathon's in the last 3 yrs. was a contributer. Anyone find that strenuous activity brings them on?

I like you went through every form of test to find out why I was having constant flu like symptoms which were debilitating me. I am never ill and very hard working but like you I was bedridden for about 3-5 days a month. I suffered fevers, chills, terrible sore throat, horrendous pains in my legs, etc. I had the hormone implant in my arm and after one year I had it out and have been perfectly fine. However, I have the worst period pains ever and recently the doctor has tried me on a pill as a last resort otherwise they have advised me to have a hysterectomy. I wonder whether you found any bcp which worked for you. I am experiencing mouth ulcers having been on this pill for 5 days and am worried. Perhaps you would let me know. Thanks. has dec

I can't take any form of hormonal BC because of it's effects on me. It took nearly a full year of me being nearly bedridden to figure it out -- went to several doctors & specialists and got tested for everything in the book -- from STDs to Lupus to Fybromyalgia.
BC gives me the symptoms of a bad case of the flu... minus the congestion, plus MASSIVE canker sores & rashes. I had fevers, chills, body aches, fatigue, dizziness, fainting, nausea, muscle aches, weakness, headaches, blurred vision --- ALL the symptons of the flu w/o the congestion. The rashes were mainly on my arms & legs and were red blotches with tiny little itchy bumps all over them. The canker sores were huge -- sometimes the size of a dime -- and constant. I would have one or two at a time and as they healed, others would begin to form.
I recently started taking the herbal supplement Fenugreek to increase my milk production --- I'm nursing my 4th born -- and I've began getting the canker sores again. I'm wondering if there's a connection...but haven't been able to find any documentation on it yet.

With all due respect to medical professionals - never, ever take what a doctor says at face value. They do not know - there is not enough information about the link between birth control pills and their effects. Obviously, from our own experience (me included) there is an undeniable link between the pill and mouth ulcers and canker sores. Those of you who stopped and the sores subsequently went away are the lucky ones. For some people, they are never rid of the curse caused by taking the pill. The moral of the story is listen to and trust your body. Just because somebody is a doctor, it doesn't mean they are right. In fact, it is almost embarrasing the lack of knowledge most doctors and even specialists have regarding the link between birth control and mouth ulcers.

I started birth control at the age of 14 b/c of painful periods and back pain. I had tons of canker sores (12 the week before my wedding). My doctor said it was a virus that had attached itself to my cycle and I would have these my whole life. When I got off the pill to get pregnant, I had some fertility issues. So, with all of the hormones I had then, I was not worried about canker sores (although when I look back I realize I had very few during that time). Between having two babies and various fertility treatments, i did not think about how little I dealt with this problem. Well, I started back on the pill after my second child because of many painful periods- and guess what? The sores are back with a vengence. I cannot believe I am 34 and it took me this long to make the BC connection. I am quitting. I can deal with the cramps for a week much better than this.

I am so thankful I found this post! I have been suffering from chronic canker sores for the past 6 months and FINALLY came across a doctor (internist) who suggested it might be linked to my birth control (orthtricylen). I have more hope than ever before that I have found a solution to this painful, life altering ordeal!! I have only been off the pill for 3 days now, but after reading all these posts I am confident this is the solution!!

I'm so glad I found this post! Now I know I'm not crazy!! I was getting horrible canker sores and started suspecting the pill (Yaz). I went off the pill to get pregnant, and hardly ever got one. I just restarted the pill 1.5 weeks ago and now have 6 canker sores! Has anyone with this problem tried another brand of the pill that didn't cause this?

I can totally empathize - I started getting canker sores after taking the BCP (Estelle). Luckily, I made the connection and went off it after a few months, but still, every month either right before my period or during ovulation I get a canker sore. It hurts like hell! Anyway, I have found a herb, Agnus Castus (also known as Vitex) that has been clinically proven (studies done in Germany) to treat these kinds of ulcers caused by hormonal imbalance. Since I've been taking it, I've had one in eight weeks instead of one in four weeks. I urge you to do your own research on this herb - there is plenty of information online about it, and it is known in the holistic healing community as the supreme herb for balancing women's menstrual cycles and has been known to cure everything from PMS to acne. You've got nothing to lose. Doctors don't know what they're talking about when it comes to the obvious linke between birth control pills and canker sores.

I've been on Ortho Tryclen lo, for about 4 days, and I've already gotten one cold sore and another one immediately after that one, and I feel another 3 coming in. So far, on it I've only felt a few slight headaches and the cold sores.
Other than that no symtoms of anything else. I'm sure in time there might be.
But, the cold sores are a pain in the butt.

i am so glad to read others are having the same problem! i thought i was crazy. i've also my whole life been prone to getting canker sores but never like the ones i've had since taking YAZ. For some reason this just clikced in my head that there might be a correlation b/w the 2! i called the doctor and they acted like i was crazy when i asked if they had ever heard of any connection or if anyone else has had this complaint??? i'm not sure what to do... maybe stop the YAZ & just see what happens..
