bI'm bipolar and have been taking 200mg Lamictral and 25mg Seroquel for about 2 years now, with some success. Recently I decided to quit smoking and to make it more likely that I'd succeed I started taking a new quit-smoking medicine, known as Champix or Chantix.
After 5-7 days I started having the manic trip of my life, stronger than any I had ever experienced. I spent a month in a state of total euphoria. And this in spite of the fact that my mania normally expresses itself as rage and irritability -- this is only the second classic manic episode I've had in my LIFE (the first was triggered by a SSRI). Jesus was I happy! And since I had virtually no experience with euphoric mania, I was clueless.
Of course, everything came crashing down, and I'm dealing with a brutal depression and more intense suicidal ideation than I can remember ever having. EVER. So be warned, bipolars - avoid Champix / Chantix like the plague. Better to smoke yourselves to death -- you'll probably live far longer that way.(NOTE: Of course this drug is not contraindicated for bipolar - it's new, and drug companies invariably do trials on people who are healthy in every way)

Here's another posting that scared the living shite out of me:

http://www.treatmentonline.com/treatments.php...

My ex-wife committed suicide on June 5th. We found Chantix in her nightstand with 4 doses gone. She had been diagnosed with bipolar and was taking anti-depressants. Are there any warnings from Phizer on mixing Chantix with anti-depressants or people with bipolar? I thought her bipolar had been under control for the past 5 years....now this.

There really needs to be some sort of study. I'm terribly sorry for your loss, and can't imagine what you are going through. I think any drug that deals with the brain such as chantix does, would have drastic effects on someone who is bipolar. There is a case up here in Texas where a man using chantix broke into a person's home and was shot and killed. Apparently, this was completely out of character for this person. He was a wealthy musician, and lived next door to the person who's home he broke into. I think there must be a correlation.

I too had a TERRIBLE reaction to Chantix. I'm BPD II, on Lithium, Prozac, Seroquel and Xanax. I can say in complete honesty that this drug nearly killed me. I strongly suggest that anyone interested in trying this medication monitor their mental well being and ask friends and family to mention any odd behavior... it could be what saves you.

I jsut came across this and was amazed. I too am bipolar 2. At the time, I was on Abilify, Lexapro and Clonazapam. when trying Chantix.

I was not euphoric, but I was completly wired to the brim. I could not concentrate on anything. I brought everything I ever wanted at the time. I was unreal.

I am bi-polar, and have successfully quit on Chantix. Did experience the nausea and vivid dreams associated with Chantix, but no other psychological problems.

I have tried a couple of times to quit using Champix (Chantix south of the border). I generally had to quit because of stomach problems. After my last attempt I suffered what was diagnosed as an accute "stress response" usually a symptom of post traumatic stress dissorder. There had been a minor bit of bad news,(my daughter left her husband) and I wound up on Xanax for a week. I could'nt for the life of me, figure what provoked the response. I think I have my first clue.

IT TOOK THREET start-paks and two smoking slips. but I am now free from cigarettes or any tobacco products. I feel amazing. I am on week 16 now. The key is to follow the instructions precisely. and when the doctor is filling the script make sure you ask for chantix start-pak and chantix continuation pak only. dont have them write some chatix times 30 BS. the PAKS are more like a program. you have to push a button, slide over the card, flip it open and punch out day 1 am day 1 pm. day 2 am day 2 pm. It is a temporary ritual for the lack of the old one. Trust me it helps. You will feel a bit nauseas at for the first week but its worth it. On the seventh day smoke as much as you can and before bed that night, say goodbye to cigarettes. When you awake on the eighth day you are a non smoker. FYI, that means ashtrays lighters matches, throw them away. if your roomate or partner continues to smoke respect their smoking. You quiting smoking has nothing to do with their smoking. do not expect them to smoke outside or smoke in another room. Just stay busy and CHEW LOTS OF GUM. My favorite Trident spearment and Passionnberry. oh and orbit Maui melon mint. chew it all the time. GOOD LUCK

I started taking Champix and also was retrenced from my job in the same week. I thought the depression was from losing my job until I started hearing alot of negative feed back about Champix. A friend of mind also tried to commit suicide while on them too. Although I quit smoking using them. If you have a history of depression and suicidal thoughts it is not a good idea. I think Doctors need to be speaking to there patients alot more before prescribing this drug.

I took champix for thee months and then a second round to reinforce my quit. I ended up in a state of mania like i have never experienced before. I missed three months of work. I am back to smoking again.
I am sorry this drug didn't work for me as it seemed to be the answer.

I would appreciate hearing about some of your problems with Champix. My brother is presently suffering from delusional disorder because of it. We are considering a class action lawsuit with the company. Your comments can be emailed to jbarnestaylor@persona.ca. Thanks!

I want to know if any class action suits are being considered. My son did champix, quit smoking and as soon as champix ended, has had a plethora of symptoms, physical and psychiatric that have not improved for over 2 months.

I have been on Chantix for 4 weeks. After doing some research on the web. I'm sitting here in tears. For the last week I have been an utter mess. Litterly to the point of almost checking myself in I'm so depressed... Can't say sucidial but very depressed. I am bi-polar 2. I am on Lamictal (200mg) and Seraquil (50mg). I purposly asked my doctor if I'd have any trouble with the meds I'm on and he and the pharmacy said no, I'd be fine. After reading this no wonder why I've been in tears, having crazy dreams and almost just not wanting to be here. Now, I quit smoking and I'm quitting this pills... Thanks everyone who put their stories up. Guess I shouldn't trust doctors!

My ex recently took chantix for over a month, he is not diagnosed with any type of bipolar, but luckily I have a degree in Psych and have come to the conclusion that he has "bipolar lite". After taking Chantix for over a month, he left for a few weeks to help disaster relief in another state.(keep in mind he has admitted to having bipolar, and treats it with alcoholism). Prior to his departure he was in a euphoric state of mind, even wanted to get back together and admitted to some of his faults. When he got back home, he truned into a complete jerk. I now come to realize that while he was a way he didn't take the Chantix, started smoking again and was sober for 9 days. This combination has created a bipolar disaster in his own life. Always research a drug on you own before mixing it with anything, or even taking it by itself. The brain is barely understood the way it is, and these drugs can lead to disaster!

Hi, I'm bipolar I, and have been taking Champix for the past two months. I have not had any problems with this drug and I'm sorry to hear that others have. If you do have any concerns about taking this drug please discuss it with your doctor and weigh up other options that can assist you stopping to smoke. All the best to all out there. T
