Hi There,
I am looking for any adive for the ongoing back spasms (severe tightening) I get after sleeping for only a few hours. It's odd that I don't have any back problems during the day... but it keeps me from sleeping at night. I often have to get up and walk around to loosen them up or sit straight up in bed to get any sleep.
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
I'm desperate to find out. It has been going on for years and no doctor seems to be able to help me. I am a 42 year old female.
Thanks for any adice!

Hi Tracy,

First of all, make sure your mattress is giving you the support you need. mattesses that are worn out, too soft, or even too firm can give you the symptoms you have described.

I've found for myself that I don't do well if I sit in my bed and watch TV all during the evening. As an insominac, I treat my bedroom like a sanctuary for sleeping or other types of activities that help me unwind and prepare for restful sleep. I keep most of my other activities confined to other rooms in the house.

There are lots of good ideas out there. Not every solution fits your situation. Experiment until you find something that work for you.

I have the same problem! It's the worst if I sleep on ether side. sometimes it turns into spasms. The only way I can shift around is if I do it slowly. Then it feels like a welcome stretch. I have no pain before going to bed but I feel like crap when I wake up!

I had the same problem for years and what has eliminated the problem is drinking as much lemon water, pop, tea, or juice that I can. I stopped for a while and the pain came back. I'm sold. Let me know if it works for you.

I have the very same problem. It had been going on for several years, but now it is at it's all time worst. I can't stand it anymore. I can't sleep over 4 hours. My back feels like it is going to break in half. Im sooo tired I can hardly take it anymore. I have been to the Dr. and they can't find anything. Just L4 L5 degenerative signs, but they said that is normal and should not cause the pain I have. I am at my witts end. I would try another mattress, but can't afford to buy one. Any suggestions.

Have you tried stretching before going to bed? I had a similar problem and it helped out greatly. If you have the time, check out the G2 Back Stretch mats. They have self guiding pictures on the mats to help out with your routine. Take my coupon code that they gave me (TLG2DEAL) if you're interested. Hope that helps.

I had same problem 2 yrs ago where I will go bed w/o any pain and then will wake up bcoz of severe pain in my upper back in middle of night after having 3-4 hrs of sleep. It was unbearable pain during night but I will not even notice anything during whole of the day. With insufficient night sleep I felt tired at my work and whole of the day. One of my colleagues at work also had same problem during same time as I had it. We both took different steps to handle it but now we both are fine as I haven't heard him complaining about it since. Although I don't have much different to share from what other people have already told here but as I still remember the frustration I was going thru at that time so I thought i'll share my experience.
I did some of the light upper back exercise daily during that time (googled upper back exercises). One of the main exercises which i thought helped was a simple swimming butterfly stroke movement of arms. For people who can swim it's good otherwise you can just do arm movements while standing. These exercises won't seem help day one but I definitely started noticing milder pain after a week or so. I just exercised for 40-50 mins at max daily with 5-min breaks. I didn't take any medication or any ointments at all.
My colleague went to massage therapist, had multiple massages and he took some medication too.
As I said we both took different approaches to what looked to be similar pain but we both are fine so far.
I will really be glad if my these input could help any one suffering from this pain as I don't have it now but i haven't yet forgotten the pain of going thru it either. Good luck guys. May all of you have a quick relief.

I'm so fing suck of being in pain. I can't take it anymore. I'm serious. I had cervical injections it worked for 5 days. Trigger injections help only where they stick me. Doc won't give any meds. I have bulging disc at every level in my neck and arthritis and lordosis. My left ear I'd killing me. My shoulders and neck are on fire. Pain going down my arm and muscle spasms and headaches. all cause I cleaned house today. It's sad to live in pain. I feel like someone hit me in the back of my head with a bat. Can't even get arthritis meds. WTF Is that about. They want to do injections that cost me 90 for two. Now they want to burn my nerves. She said it will hurt for weeks and no meds just trigger shots. I'm not doing it, hell I'm not going through that pain then it may not work or get worse on nothing. Even having spasms in my arm and under arm. I need help I'm so sick of this I want to cry. I hate those who messed it up for all of us, I reAlly thought this doc was going to help me, I haven't taken anything in almost four years and I decide to get help and all they have done for me is make it worse and take over 2000 in Less than a month.

I have had such night time back spasms for about 5-6 months. In that time I have slept at home and a family member's apartment (sofa bed - the worst), and numerous hotel rooms, and get the pain on all kinds of mattresses. I am a 50 year old male, and have very overweight. I have been overweight most of my adult life, but am at my largest right now. I am blaming a lot of this on my weight, but is the correct? I like to sleep on my side, but the spasms get really bad when I am on my side. The spasms are always in the same area of my back, near my right side, under my rib cage.

Just thought I would share. Not sure what I will do, but it is probably time to talk to my physician.

I have the back spasms that it feels like I'm going to die. When it does hurt, it hurts in my upper to middle of my back. But the pain feels like it moves from my back to my sternum and ribs. And it feels like my muscles are getting ripped apart. When it isn't so severe I lay on the floor and eleavate my feet. It works. But today its severe. Got the heating pain on. Seems to help the pain
But I need answers!

The ONLY thing that works with my nightly back spasms is proper rest and excersise. By proper rest i mean stay in bed in the morning until it sorts itself out. I'll explain what i mean... Every night i would go to bed and my back would tighten right up, if i get up when still really TIRED in the morning my back will stay tight all day and get worse, if i wait and go back to sleep and get up when NOT TIRED anymore i am in no pain at all. It all depends on if i get out of bed when im still tired or not tired. If i keep on doing that it gradually gets better until no problems at all. But if i get up in morning when still really tired back spasms come straight back. My guess is that is what causes back spasms in the first place- the back and body hasnt had enough time to recover from the previous day's exertion
