This is my first posting here, and just wondering if you can help. I had a fusion L4 L5 L5 S1 in May. I have this awful unbearable pressure/knot feeling in my lower back. It is unbearable some days and I just have to lye down after a few hours up most days with it. I am wondering if anyone can help, I have spoken to my neuro about it and he doesnt know what is causing it.

Iwould get a second opinion from a orthopedic docter, I have had seven back surgeries and I had a not so great of an experience with my neuro surgeon,so I got a second opinion from a couple doctors and I went with a orthopedic doctor,He help explain what was wrong and then corrected the problems.

The pressure feelings you are having are normal. It is caused by the hardware (pedicle screws and rods) putting pressure on the muscles. Give it a year for the bony fusion to solidify and if you can still feel the pressure requst to have the hardware removed.

I had my hardware removed in August 07 and feel tremendously better.

We have a forum here on topix for spinal fusion complications. Lost of interesting points of views to read and glean wisdom.

Iím not going to try to gaurantee anything but Iíve been using this thing called The Turtle to handle my back pain. I didnít think it would work but my friend told me that it worked out for him so I decided to try it out for a few weeks. My back pain actually did go away after about 2 or 3 days and when my trial period was over, they tried to charge me an outrageous price like 130 dollars but after talkin to them for 10 minutes, I managed to get it discounted to 45 and I think its worth it.

The burning pain is your nerves, coming back to life. I had similar pain (and still do sometimes, I had a L4/5 and L5/S1 fusion w cage 6mths ago), but mine was horrible burning sensation coming out of my foot. This has subsided significantly over time. I only get it very occasionally. They say it takes 1 yr for fusion and 2 years for full stability/healing to happen, so give it some time. I also have numbness in my right toe...No idea, but I'm assuming it's due to some nerve damage.

Overall, compared to the pain I had before this is 0, more than happy I had the fusion done. Hope it all works out for you!

thank you sooomuch for your response. I too have burning in my feet both of them, on the very bottom. I thought I was crazy. the pressur in my buttocks is some times unbearable. I recently had a CT, and MRI the surgeons think everything looks fine but I know what my body feels. I agree in the long run this pain is better then the pain I suffered before surgery. I have requested to start aqua therapy I hear it helps. Again thank you.

I have just stumbled across this page and have some questions. I have had back pain for 3 years. Back in 2005 I had decompression surger L2345. It has never been right since. Last Friday after a second MRI I was told that a fusion was going to be necessary. I am scared to death after the last time. I just want to know Was it worth it? How is your quality of care in compairison to before surgery? Did you have to wear a brace after surgery? I may be hoping for to much but the pain is so bad now. My left leg goes numb and I can hardly stand on it. Any infrmation you can give me would be very welcome.

I had L5-S1 spinal fusion in fall of 07 and have had pain ever since. Recently I started having pain in my right buttock and thigh and numbness down to my toes. I went back to my spine surgeon and the x-ray showed that 1 of my screws has broken and have to redo the surgery. Does anyone out there have the same issues?

Well I had back pain my whole life, I mean from my first memories I had back pain. Icouldnt sit still in school therefore couldn't concentrate. Anyway I got headaches everyday for about 6 months when I was around 15. I went to a chiropractor that seen on my x-Ray that I did not have the tendon connecting my c1-c2. So when I quit growing I had spinal fusion there. But the back pain I explained before was lower back. My nuero doc said there is a slight curve and 2 degenerated discs and they both were bulging. I decided not to do anything about it cause I have kids and the was dealt with for several years so my tolerance is higher than normal. Well it got to the point that I got addictedto ultram(taking 30-35 a day). Stopped those pills and when I was at work I fell off a ladder, only 12' high but still broke my ankle, and didn't notice any additional pain in lower back. But after staying home my back started to act up more than usual, I just thought it was from not getting loosened up since I was at home and couldn't go to the gym. Well the Saturday before thanksgivng I sat down to change the registration sticker on my car and the pain I got left me unable to move in my driveway for a half an hour. I had to send my kids to get me help. The MRI showed a herniated disc but no pressure on my nerves. I did the needle in the disc test and he couldn't touch the lowest disc it hurt so bad. Needless to say I had l4/5, l5/s1 done last Tuesday and when got to the disc he said it litterally was so bad it popped almost completely out. I was up and walking around the hospital the next morning. The nurses couldn't believe and frankly neither could i. I hope for everyone who has back pain gets help they need. Believe me nobody knows back pain unless you have it. And it can ruin everthing, my first marriage it ruined and I just got remarried and it put stress on it. I know for me I am more irritable cause the pain and snap much faster at my kids for something stupid. Oh well I hope the pain is gone and yours also

I had spinal fusion and hardware installed to correct scoliosis, clear stenosis, etc, 5 weeks ago. Front abdomin and spinal incision from T5 - all the way down. I am wearing a clamshell brace 23.5 hours a day. The brace is a bummer! Last few days Ive felt some numbness in feet. Any clues for how to put up with the g.d. brace? I try to talk lovingly to my brace since it's going to be with me for 3 months...
