I had my appendix removed Wednesday night. It was an open appendectomy and my appendix had niether burst nor was it perforated. I was released Thursday afternoon and had a bowel movement by Friday morning, Taking Vicodin every 4 hours and am able to eat anything I want. Am going out to a club tonight, but will steer clear of alcohol. Sorry to hear of everyone's pain. Wish everyone's experience could have been similar to mine.

note to all...for effective bowel movement have someone make you oatmeal cookies...only have them add 1 cup wheat germ and 1/4 cup more oats per batch...the recipe on the oatmeal box works best for that. You can't taste the wheat germ but in the past after surgery (19 + and counting) I found it to be the best way to make things move. You MUST drink plenty of water with them or they will have the opposite effect....hope that helps someone!

Had surgery bout 21 days ago. Still pretty swollen, bruised and uncomfortable. Bowels moved after fifth day but now cant stop it. Sometimes there is blood in the stool too. Normal? I think not. Some days I am fine, but then I get shooting pains in left side and left arm. Anyone else? Can't eat much, just comes right outta me. Pretty sh*$$y stuff.

My back hurt following surgery also, my mom (a nurse) said it was probably due to the gas they pumped in to see (I had a laprascopic appy; no rupture) or possibly they could have pulled some muscles in your back when they transfered you to your bed. The back pain resolved about 3-5 days post-op. Also about the hunching over, I know it's hard and it hurts like crazy but it's important to try to stand and walk as straight as possible
so you don't develop adhesions. I found it helped to press on the sore spots to give them some support when standing and walking.

I AM REALLY SORE AMD MY BACK HURTS REALLY BAD, DID ANYONE ELSE HAVE BACK PAINS. I STILL HAVE A COUPLE OF STICHES IN ONE OF THE INCISIONS. I GO IN A COUPLE OF DAYS TO GET THEM REMOVED. IT IS VERY DIFFCULT TO GET AROUND WITHOUT WALKING HUNCHED OVER, AND IT HURTS TO BEND OVER, BUT FROM READING ALL OF YOUR POST I GUESS THAT IS NORMAL, SO THANKS FOR THE INFO, AND GET WELL TO EVERYONE!!!!

Jessica, my appendix ruptured as well and I had to drain the pus too. I walked with a hunch during that time, because of the stupidly high amount of pain I had. My back hurt a lot too, because of the tube being in my stomach and stuff. I found that I had a lot of lower/right back aches during that time. So, totally normal!

Do you know what the incision site should look like? I also split some of my staples when coughing and doing too much while at home.

ok, guys yes the not going for a # 2 is normal. Think about it. The appendix is behind or near your large bowl. The doc has to move all that intestines around to get at it. Mine was removed 7 days ago and doc said it was one of the worst he ever seen. It is suppose to be free not attached to anything and mine was totally imbedded into my large bowl and attached to my stomach (i had 2 years of off and on pain thinking it was irritable bowl syndrome.) Anyway he kept me on clear liquid diet for 6 days straight (only broths, tea, and jello) Needless to say I didn't have to worry about weight gain. But once I got out on Monday I had 1/2 a piece of toast and an egg..... arrrgh, the opposite of constipation occurred. I went on the RABY diet for the other problem (rice, applesauce, banana, bread white, plain yorgurt) and all settled. But everyone is different. I recommend seeing your doctor and and asking for Domparidome (motilimum) it speeds up the digestive tract and will very calmly help with the constipation. My doc put me on it to get ride of the excessive "air" or "bloating" after the surgery.... it helped but caused the opposite problem when I finally ate (but I hadn't eaten for 4 days prior to surgery because of the pain so my body freaked out) otherwise if your doc won't prescribe this med, hight fiber diet and stool softener.... Ok.. you probably have guessed, all my family is in the health arena. My dad is a pharmacist for 25 years so trust me on this one... not to mention my mom is a nurse and my big bro a nurse practioner. Anyway... Domparidom guys... its gentle, fast acting and very useful. Thanks... Ps. Is anyone experiencing general Bloating or puffiness from surgery. I am very fit and have an ironing board stomache... except now it looks like I'm 3 months pregnant... slowly going down but arrrrgh..... Just started back on light cardio at gym today and felt good. <quoted text>

I had my appendix out a week ago today. I had all the same bowel movement problems... feels so aweful! After I went #2 I started to feel much better. But now it hurts to touch anywhere below my incision even wearing clothes hurts when they touch that area. It feels just like a very bag rug burn! Does anyone else have this type of pain? Maybe it's just part of the healing process?

I had mine removed New Years Eve and went skiing last week (Feb 2nd). The only problem was I am not a fit as I would have been so had to pace myself as I got tired and I am 54. The doc did check me over before I left, he said carry on but if it hurts stop! Have fun.

This happened to me and I was in severe pain (worse than before my appendix was removed) my bowels were blocked. You can die from this and I had to go to the ER. I would go to the ER if the pain is really bad. I could keep NOTHING down and I was passing no gas (from the surgery).

Hey,

I had my appendix removed three years ago. I continue to have pain on a daily basis.
The pathology report claims the appendix was removed. However, I have had a CT Scan and an Ultrasound which report that, "the appendix looks normal" (also had an MRI and other tests). The pain resonates externally and internally to touch. Am I concerned? Yes, I am likely going to have laparoscopic surgery to determine what is going on -?s the appendix still there? What is causing the continued pain?

Reassuring to see others have had the same post-op symtoms as me: bloating, pain, weakness etc. Mine was very bad the surgeon said (swelled to about 2cm = 3/4" diameter) and came out in what was described as a difficult op. on Thursday 15th (after Valentine's day in hospital) so that's 6 days ago. Turfed out of the hospital the next day and went home. Pain was bad but is now declining with Paracetamol and prescribed anti-inflammatories. Normal bowel service resumed after 2 days.

My wife is stopping me doing anything much and I still find I feel weak after any exertion. I really want to get back to work and back to normal life but nobody seems to be able to say how long that will be!

I just had my appendix out on Feb 20 at night and released yesturday. I'm moving ok but if I move too much I get sick in my stomach. How long before I can really do anything? I need to get back to work I just don't know when I should go back. I'm afraid I might tear open my incisions. I had a laproscopic surgery. So I have the three holes but they were glued up. Does this stuff come undone easily. And my stomach is always bloated and in pain. Is this normal?

When I had my appendix removed only the tip was inflamed. I had been ill for nearly a week and was basically asymtematic (no other symptoms). I had laparoscopic surgery as well. I was home for about a month. It was very obvious that I couldn't move around too much, sit comfortably, etc. My first week back at work should have been graduated (a few hours per day).
It's amazing how the hospitals try to kick you out. I had my surgery at 7 a.m. They told me I'd probably be home the same evening!
Watch those pain pills - they can mess up your tummy. They were actually making me ill - nausea and dizziness.
Good luck.

Wow, you guys must either be real young and heal fast, or have a very high tolerance for pain. I had my appendix removed 12 days ago and I am still in a lot of pain. Lots of bloating. Nights are horrible, can't sleep because of pain on right side. Has anyone else had these symptoms? How long did they last? I thought having my appendix removed was going to make me feel better, not worse.
I had my appendix removed last night and my right side is also killing me i thought that the pain there would go away but it hasnt!! why?
