I have had shoulder pain close to 2 years now. I have been through months of Physical Therapy, a manipulation under anesthesia in Feb 2010 for a frozen shoulder, 6 weeks of PT, injections, impingement, removal of large bone spurs and "aggressive" bursitus surgery 3 weeks ago. Still have my therapist and surgeon looking at me saying "you should be feeling a lot better" but I still have constant pain, even though I can lift my arm over my head now (couldn't do that before)putting my arm behind my back is just painful. It sounds like from all of you, it can be normal to still feel pain after surgery for months? My biggest obstacle is sleep. How do you all find a comfortable position to sleep in? I don't have a recliner so pretty much not an option.

How are you doing now? 5 weeks ago I had a SLAP tear fixed and anchored in my shoulder. I am OK during the day, but at night the pain is excruciating. It is wearing me thin....

thanks-guess i just cant sleep in recliner for some reason- did try it a few times though and i appreciate your advice. the vicodin isn't really doing much either and i dont think it will. wondering if a steroid injection would help reduce inflammation and maybe release the pressure on the nerve. to be continued!!!

<quoted text> Hi Joel: So sorry to hear about your back. I cannot begin to imagine the pain you must be having. I never did have pain from my fall (thank heavens). When I saw doc I asked him about it and he said if it didn't hurt more than it has been not to worry about it. Then he went on to put me on permanent restrictions and put me on partial permanent impairment. Wonder when w/c is going to send me the letter and offer the settlement. Anyway, I'm back doing my normal job at the store with limitations of course, but I'm happy because I'm back in the garden shop (where I think I belong). Hope you have a Happy Easter ... and, darn it, get better! Meggie
Hey Joel ... Been two months since fall and visit to ortho. Got letter from w/c and settlement offer end of May. Signed and returned the next day ... now waiting on settlement check. Anyway, went back to ortho today and he checked shoulder movement. Said he was pleased with progress and that pain is much less now. Don't have to go back unless I start having trouble...which I don't anticipate. Have however been back in hospital due to the medically uncontrolled HBP. Going for stress test on 7/7. How is your back doing? Feeling any better

I had right shoulder surgery 5 weeks ago, rotator cuff tear, calcified tendon and bone spur removed - in an immobilization sling up until this past week... allowed to take the arm out for short periods of time and was told to move my fingers, wrist and elbow half dozen times a day along dangling my arm straight down and making VERY small pendulum motions starting on day 2. This actually helped my arm not to seize up. Physio started 2 weeks ago, was quite painful but thanks to immediate movement I have a good range - I'm using a lot of ice packs. I've taken myself off meds but now trying to figure out how to sleep with pain?

2 months since my surgery. I am going to a massage therapist who is really helping my tight swollen back, shoulder and neck muscles. Still in pain at times and can't put arm behind my back. 3 more weeks of PT and then they will reassess to see if they can let me go. I do my PT at home too. If I skip a day or two...I am in pain.

I did a little search as I am 9 weeks post op - labrum repair- 2 anchors and rotator cuff cleanup, bursitis.. I am still in allot of pain. It seemed to get better- then about 2 weeks ago got allot worse. Attempting to sleep is pure hell. Waking up in the morning is once again pure hell and agony. This am I actually yelled out in pain... so I am guessing others experience this too... not unusual for 9 weeks post to still be in pain.. I thought I would be pain free and darn near my old self by now... guess not! I go to PT and massage therapy both help ALLOT! painful - but - helpful. any advice for sleeping?

I had my gall bladder removed yesterday and have been in agony with shoulder pain! Apparantly, it's due to the CO2 they use to blow the stomach up to operate. It's so painfull, how long will it last? I can't rest, I'm taking paracetomol, diclofenac and codiene, regularly! I just want to cry!

I'm a 39yr.old female.I injuried myself in 2008,work everyday.I attended p/t for about 6months,dr.said it would help.I had a torn rotator cuff which wasn't very big.P/T was suppose 2 help it but it didn't.A year later in October,I had surgery,it was very painful.Dr. said in 3months I would be able 2 return 2 work.I had several dr. visits and more p/t.I was still in more pain than b4.I had 2nd surgery 2 remove scar tissue,it's been 9months,I'm out of a job and still in pain daily. No more surgery for me.Dr. has release me and says there's nothing else I can do.So,now i'm with out a job and still in pain.I feel like a resident in therapy b/c i've been going for so long.Dr.make me feel like my pain is in my head,I know it's real.any suggestions?

It has been 3 months since my shoulder surgery. The doctor says I'm doing great, but why is my pain so much worse than before the surgery? Why isn't it getting better? If I had it to do over, I would not have the surgery. No one bothered to tell me that recovery time is 6 months to a year. I had no idea until after the surgery. I'm doing the therapy, exercising, ice and heat. The problem with reading the other posts is that there are still no answers as to why there is still so much pain after the surgery and for such a long time after the surgery. Has anyone recovered? Does anyone know a website that has answers? The doctor I used has a good reputation for being competent, so why am I in so much more pain than before surgery? I have a high threshold for pain, but this constant pain with no relief in sight is really getting to me.

Hi Meg. My back still bothers me and will for the rest of my life, I'm quite sure. My shoulder is not good. A recent MRI shows a full thickness re-tear of the Rot.Cuff. No more surgery though. I'll just live with it. I take pain meds when needed. As long as I can work as a pianist/singer and lift my 3 yr.old grandson I'm OK. Stay well, Joel

It's been a while since your surgery, and I too, have had surgery for impingement and bone spurs. It's been 3 months since my surgery? How are you feeling now?

I injured my shoulder 4 years ago and did not have any insurance so i suffered, until i got some last year. I went to one dr who gave me an mri. He told me I had a cyst and a bunch of fluid. So he gives me a cortisone shot and sends me to rehab. They say we need you to be in pain. So i go back and he gives me another MRI and decides to offer me another shot and more rehab, I tell him to go shove it and find another dr. This next dr. says surgery is an option. Im like sweet, after 4 years I can finally have some relief. So i get the surgery 5 months ago and am in as much pain as i was before the surgery. I was in rehab post-op but they said it was only getting worse. So I saw my doctor yesterday, he seems unsure of what is wrong so he gave me another cortisone shot. I asked if what is gonna happen if this doesnt help. And he really never gave me an answer. So i'm pretty bummed. I feel like this was the wrong decision. But what should be the next step. I feel like if this doesn't work I think I should look into seeing if the dr. messed up. Maybe he underestimated what was wrong with my shoulder...
FRUSTRATED!!!
How are you doing now?

Hey Joel ... Good to hear from you. I just received notification today that you had responded to my last msg. Sorry to hear about your back and shoulder still bothering you. My shoulder sometimes bothers me still, but I've learned to grin and bear it. Been in and out of hospital with the heart problem lately, but that is something I will live with the rest of my life. Had to make an emergency trip 50 miles south of Effingham on Thursday ... elderly mother not doing so well ... and returned home last night. A lot of driving in two days for me. I stopped every so often and got out of the car and stretched and walked around a bit ... kept me from siezing up in the shoulder and from the heart acting up. Actually, had a very pleasant trip. Oh yes, I finally settled the w/c claim and got a new computer, printer & router. What a pleasure! Stay well and please keep in touch. Always a pleasure to hear from you.

I am now 11 weeks post op for Rotator Cuff Sugery and I have to say that I never thought I'd be able to sleep, let alone be virtually pain free. I started PT 3 x's a wk, then 2 x a week, then once a week for 2 weeks. Last Friday was my last day of PT and I really stick to my home therapy exercises. If I skip a couple days I know it. These exercises and stretching will now become part of my exercise routine for the rest of my life. My elbow, shoulder blade and shoulder will still ache for a short period of time but it is getting further apart. I crossed a bridge about 2 wks ago when I slept all night!:) I was discouraged, exhausted and depressed because it seemed like it would never get better. I thought there was something wrong with me, but my Dr. & Phys. Therapist (who was awesome) kept telling me to DO THE EXERCISES and it would get better. All I can say is don't give up. I am 58 yrs young and feel almost back to normal again.

I had right shoulder surgery for impingement, large bone spur removed, cyst removed and labrum tear. It has been 3 weeks and the sharp pain running down my arm is extremely painful. I have been taking Vicodin but I can't do this anymore, I can't function. I made an appointment to get some accupunture for pain relief has anyone ever tried this? I am willing to try anything to get some relief. My surgeon is not very sympathetic to my problem. Maybe someone can help. I thought I would be totally recovered by 4 weeks! Guess I was totally wrong!

Hang in there Cindy. I thought the same thing. I was in as much pain after the surgery. Too bad the Drs don't tell you...but then I guess we wouldn't get the surgery. I was sleeping on the couch every night until my Husband asked if I would be on the couch from now on. I couldn't sleep...I was miserable. BUT...I did go to physical therapy and exercised the arm religiously. It really hurt, but my therapist said it "just takes time". Sure enough, just about 11 weeks later I turned a corner and started feeling alot better. From time to time I still get an ache in the shoulder, but I feel so much better. I was told 3 months before you feel better...so hang in and do your exercises.

I wish I knew the answer to your question. That is why i am here today. I had my surgery last Friday. My range of motion gets better each day. I go to my follow up appointment tomorrow but have no idea how long to wear the sling. Currently I wear it about half of the time.

Im in the same boat. I had surgery on my left shoulder to remove bone spurs from rotator cuff in April of 2009. I went through p/t for several months prior to and following surgery, and had two cortizone shots to help with the pain. I am sorry I did anything to my shoulder I should have just dealt with the pain because now I have constant pain shooting from rotator cuff all the way up my neck. Everyday activties sometimes are a struggle.
