In response to the jerk,,, some people have an emergency situation and are very sick, an emergency surgery is done which requires very quick IV and Meds pushed through. The pain is so bad not to mention the anesthetics so quick, so maybe the whole conversation between doctor and patient isn't the most ideal. Maybe your appy was a planned vacation.

Yes, Wayne's answer was indeed jerky.

Well Julie, you have that scars on that side because the appendectomy you had was performed with a camera. One cut was to insert a camera, another was to put air in your stomach to open the area, and the third was to actually reach in and remove the appendix. It's on the left side that way they could see, because if it was on top of the appendix it'd be difficult to see properly. Well, anyways, that's how my doc explained it to me. I got my appendectomy three days ago. I got the same incisions you did.

I completely agree with you.. I just had surgery 3 days ago and everything happenned in a matter of 5 hours between me finding out(pain) and surgery.. So, with all the pain and a huge infection in my body I had the time to ask about how many scars and designs he had in mind.. Commom get real ur jerk!

I had my appendix out a week ago through keyhole so I have. 3 little scars, I went to the doctor today as one of them is abit infected , and he was like oh you have a scar on the left side of u, when u look at my tummy it would of been his right, I did wounder this myself , he was surprised as the appendix is more the other side, but he said depending what your body is like inside things might not be exactly where they should be so people's bodies can be oppisite , but a week on I am sore from the lowest scar I guess because its infected, but hopefully will be bk to normal soon:)

Hi, I had a appendicitis removed by lap. where they made three scars. One above the belly, other exactly down and third to the left side.
Why they choose left instead of right.

I was rushed in hospital 2 weeks ago and they wasn't sure what was wrong, so they just went in to have a look about.
They discovered my appendix was leaking green poison so they removed it ASAP
I however have 3 incisions 1 left side 1 inside my belly button and 1 lower across my bikini line. I have no right hand scar what so ever. Yay!

Sometimes the appendix is on the left. If so, the colon is also on the left while the small bowel is on the right. It's a congenital defect called nonrotation or malrotation of the gut. Most people are diagnosed as infants if the malrotation creates an obstruction. If it's basic nonrotation, there is usually no blockage and is discovered during other tests. It is not usually found on regular x-ray but on CT and upper GI series (which is the best test for the condition).

I had laproscopic surgery 11 days ago. The reason your scars/incisions are on your left side is that the scope they use is placed on the opposite side so it may reach without damaging or being too close to work on it.

Hey, i had my appendix out afew years ago, when i went in to get it removed (it was an emergency appointment because of sudden pain) but i had horrific pain on my right side so they gave me an ultrasound on my right side and located my appendix on my right side, yet the scars from my key hole surgery are in my belly button, lower abdomen where it should be, and on my left side? But the doctors assured me my appendix was on my right, so why is my scar on the left?...

Julie, they have your scar on the opposite side because that is where the camera went, your bellybutton is where the doctor removed it, and the middle pelvic area one is where they put your drain (if it burst). Don't worry most people don't remember when they were in the hospital after surgery. My doctors gave me morphine and I still remember it.

Very well said! I had my appendectomy four days ago and was very sick and rushed to the OR for emergency surgery. Wasn't really paying much attention to the surgeon as i normally would. So yeh Wayne is a jerk!!!!

people...please youtube a laproscopic appendectomy.... then you will know why your incision is on the left. Your appendix is located on the right, in the LLQ (Lower left quadrant) of your body. You can also look up virtual videos which will show you why you and I have these incisions.

I've found my back being sore due to using my back more than my abs. Instead of relying on my core I'm using back muscles for supporting my body, and I'm not used to it. It's gotten better after a couple weeks.(Just had mine out 10 days ago)

I did ask my nurse when I wake and she said that it gives the equipment better movement/ reach ( sounds like the triangulation mentioned earlier) vs being right on top of it and having very little room to move it. But so many articles I read on the internet shows one of the holes on the right instead of the LEFT like mine. Makes me wonder if my surgeon chose the "wrong" way so I am glad to see a lot of the LEFT holes here .
yeah I just had my appendix removed lapparoscopically friday morning . I have 3 incisions one on my lower left side , my pelvic area & my belly button . I was confused also as to why my incision was on the left side but after reading some of these comments , I'm at ease with my concern

I have had my appendix removed two weeks ago and also have incision sites to the left, belly button and lower pubic area. It's good to know that it's fairly common
