I have known since I was a teen that I have low iron level, they had to put me on iron pills while pregnant because the little iron my body got went to the baby and I was passing out.

My appetite has not really changed any over the past few years but over the past like year I seem to always be tired, getting sick , having headaches, feeling dizzy , my heart rate sometimes speeds up, my arms and legs feel tired, I feel cold ALOT, especially my feet and hands and sometimes I feel warm accept for my hands and feet like right now, the only parts of my body that feel cold are my feet and hands .. I am one of those people that use to never get sick and now I constantly feel bad weather it just be a little stomach ache or headache. Can anemia really cause you to feel this bad all the time and why after all these years is it just starting to effect me (I am 24 now)?

What are some foods/drinks that can help increase my iron level?

Clams, Mussels and Oysters- if you can stomach them- are REALLY really high in heme iron (heme iron is absorbed best). They are best absorbed with vitamin C. I have had reoccurring anemia for the past 5 years and have found that iron rich food sources help much more than supplements. I buy cans of clams/mussels and eat them on crackers with a glass of orange juice (pretty much every day). I don't know if it is a placebo effect, but I pretty much feel an instant burst of energy after I eat them.

Hi ChrissyLynn,

yes, anemia can really make you feel that bad. You should check your ferritin levels. If they are too low - below 5, it is extremely hard to raise with just food or iron supplements. You might want to talk to your doctor to see a hemotologist.
