(You do not have to use your name if you do not wish to) Age: Occupation: 1. How did you discover you had anemia? Did you notice any symptoms or were you surprised at your diagnosis? 2. What type of anemia do you have? Do you know what caused it? If so, what was the underlying cause? 3. How long have you had anemia for? 4. What do you do to treat it? 5. How do you keep track of your progress? 6. How often do you have to have blood drawn? 7. How do you feel about these blood tests? Please explain your experience. 8. Do you ever put off being tested? Why? 9. How do you feel about having anemia? If you do not feel comfortable posting your answers on a public forum, you can email me at spiralimperfect@hotmail.com Thank you so much for your time! The University of Pennsylvania's Department of Psychology is currently investigating the tendency for iron-deficiency patients to chew ice. We believe that the underlying reason people take part in pagophagia (ice-eating) is to increase their ability to pay attention and mentally comprehend information.
Therefore, our study will include two cognitive tasks - one for attention and one for memory/repetition. The total amount of time for this session will last about 1.5 hours, and involves no preparation. Interested participants will be assigned to one of two groups upon entering this study. Hopefully, this study will help us understand more about the phenomenon of ice chewing and it's affects on the person. Do you find yourself chewing ice ships fairly consistently, and of you do, have you noted any changes in your ability to pay attention? This study will take place in our Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, at 37th and Walnut Streets. Scheduling for this investigation is extremely flexible, including nights and weekends, so there is a large availability in terms of scheduling. If you are interested in this study, please let me know by way of email at olli@sas.upenn.edu. You will need to bring a laboratory copy of your most recent blood work verifying that you are indeed anemic. If interested, I will be in touch shortly to schedule some time for you to come in and participate. Also, if you have any friends or collegues who may be interested, please feel free to pass this information and my email address along. Thank you for your interest, and I look forward to hearing from you!! |
