dust mite allergy and sleeping

i have noticed that my son, who has been diagnosed with a dust mite allergy, breathes completely freely when asleep, which is bizarre when you consider that the bed is where he is supposed to be the most exposed to dust mites. would this imply a psycho somatic element to the allergy? has anyone else had this experience?
many thanks in advance for your insights
