Depends on the kinds of allergies that you have. However, with a son who has seasonal allergies (pollen) and allergies to animals (particularly cats), I have found some simple steps really work.

When he comes into the house at night:
1. Shower / bath.
2. All clothes in the hamper!
3. At least once a week washing of his bedlinens, and in hot water.
4. After washing clothes, use the clothes dryer on as hot a setting as the clothing can handle.

This seems to help to keep the allergens down, and keep his exposure minimal. You have to remember: if you are allergic to pollen, you are "collecting" it as long as you are outside. And you bring that pollen / allergens into the house with you.

Last year I got married & not only did I gain a husband, but I gained his black lab, Sham. Not even a month after we were married I was having a severe allergic reaction to Sham. My husband was devastated at the thought of having to get rid of Sham whom hed had for years. That is when my mother- in- law saw an ad in the newspaper for the Pionair Air Unit. She purchased the unit for us and I can happily say that I have not had a problem with my allergies since plus we got to keep Sham.

Although I haven't seen any scientific reports about this, I understand that using sheepskin rugs for home decor can reduce allergens in your home. If you use sheepskin rugs or pillows, try airing them by hanging outdoors for a few hours; or wash them in wool shampoo, rinse and hang to dry. This should help take care of stubborn dust mites and other irritants. Check out this article:
