Maple Tree Allergies

I was just diagnosed with maple tree allergies. We have a 60 foot silver maple in our yard which is scheduled for removal. My question is about all the fallen leaves on the ground. Do they have to be removed or will a deep freeze take care of the pollen in them. My hubby puts the leaves around many plants in the fall to protect from Minnesota winters, is this a good idea?
