Very Sick from Car Air Conditioning (Mold)?

Hi All,

I've never had any allergies whatsoever. I might have "aged into" some this year, or the symptoms I'm having are from something more scary...

The problem is I purchased a used car a few months ago which smelled like old people's clothes (sorry if I offend anyone). I covered it up with air fresheners thinking it was "just an odor". When I used the Air Conditioning for the first time 3 weeks ago I got a very bad sore throat and lost my voice. A different smell which I can't really describe that came from the AC vents stayed in my nasal passage all the time, 24/7. I can smell it coming off my chest and skin and clothes. The odor is indescribeable and more unpleasant than pleasant.

Over the past 3 weeks my symptoms have developed into an upper respiratory infection which even a Z-Pac of antibiotics and sudafed barely touched. I tried Claritan for a whole week and it made no difference.

I lose my voice on some days and have a cough, blocked sinuses which result in puffy sore cheeks, and now the congestion has travelled to my ears and is giving me awful earaches.

My gut is telling me there is mold in the AC system in the car. The AC hose was in fact blocked when I took it to a mechanic and I discovered it had sat on the used car lot for 5 months.

The dealership has offered to refund my money. I have 2 days to decide. Is it ME, or the car?

I've never heard of an air conditioner molding before. I imagine the inside
of the air conditioner must be extremely moist. I think you would need to make sure that your car is clean and dry. I don't think the humidity in the air can cause that sort of problem either.
