I visited a local horse show last week and suddenly found myself unable to breathe - at all. Fortunately for me, someone had a nebulizer?) with them, shoved it into my mouth as I was turning blue (I'm told), cried "Breathe!" and am sure it saved my life. I have no history of asthma or any respiratorial condition and my heart checks out just fine. Could this have been caused by an allergy to the horses in the ring?

Hopefully you are reacting to those tight riding pants all around. Not an allergy.

Yes and you need to see an allergist ASAP.

I have never had animal allergies, now as an adult late 30s, I'm allergic to everything. My son just started riding, and it's my dream to own a horse, but I have ridden now twice and both time, I broke out in hives and my eyes got so big it looked as if I was punched. It's awful. I can't have this everytime I ride, but I can't stay away either. Allergy med isn't working. There has to be another way.

If you get a hypoallergenic horse, and keep its tack & all handling equipment separate, and board it separate, you can have a horse. We had the research done at the University of Aachen in Germany, the Curly breed has a different protein. When doing the research they found that almost all people allergic to horses were also allergic to cats. Not all, but most. Anyway, there are curly-coated and smooth-coated, both are hypoallergenic. You need to have owners of any horses offered for sale send you a hair sample in the mail, and test it before you pursue a purchase. Not every hypoallergenic horse works for every allergic person. But all allergic people I have seen over the decades DID find a hypoallergenic horse that worked for them, if they seriously looked, and did not give up.([email protected])

I did, and also had a blood test to determine whether indeed I am allergic to horses.(I am not.) Also a cardiologist and a pulmonologist. Nobody has been able to solve the problem as to why I suddenly could not breathe that day. It was scary - so much so that I carry a nebuliser slung around my neck and looks as though we'll never be parted. No fun, but a very slight handicap compared with others I could name... Thanks though for the suggestion and concern.

Is it possible to be allergic only to Haflinger horses? For example, do they have a different protein in their saliva or dander?

Marsha, when we did an allergy test on Curly Horses some years ago (had it done in Aachen, Germany) they were looking for people that were allergic to only horses, and nothing else (that was their ideal test subject). They found out they had a hard time finding humans who were allergic to horses, but not allergic to cats. There WERE some though. But most were allergic to cats, if they were also allergic to horses. I have a friend in Germany who was in on this research, who is allergic to hay, manure dust, etc., more so than horses themselves... and we did find out most people allergic to horses could find at least one Curly Horse they could live with comfortably, if they were persistent and did not give up - the toughest cases were people who were still reacting to many Curly Horses... but they do all seem to find at least 1 or 2 they CAN get along with if they search long enough. So, not all Curly Horses are alike in this regard, either, apparently.[Donna Grace, CurlyHorses.com ]

"kathleen"]My eyes always water and my nose tickles when im around horses. Does this mean im allergic to them?

It happens to me too.If it happens when your in a barn its probably from the dust, and you just need to clean out your barn and get someone else to dust everything of.(if you do it you will start to sneeze again)If it happens when your out in the open, you might just be allergic to something about the horse.Maybe rub him with a wet sponge or some other horse bathing tool and see if that helps.(if your running on dusty ground that might be part of the problem as well.Just find somewhere else to run if possible).I'm no horse expert, but that might help.

im no horse expert but if those horses are non-allergic horses then yeah,it should work. But you should ask the seller of the horses or an expert first.
