Depression is also very common in teens, since they undergo hormonal change. In most cases, depression in teens can be treated well with proper diet, adequate sleep, good exercise, and attention from their parents. Lately, the number of depressed teens has climbed significantly. Antidepressants are most likely to help, but most of these drugs have negative effects too. Paxil, for instance have recently been blamed for birth defects.

Depression stems from many various reasons, from seemingly trivial to serious incidents that triggered the illness. Any stressor is a potential cause of depression. Plus, there are genetic, diet, mental and psychological ""triggers" " that may result to a severe case of depression.

Teens are often mindful of their appearance. Having an acne would trigger anxiety because it may develop a distortion on their body image. That is why it is important to stress hygiene among teens in order to avoid having acne and other skin problems. Taking care of yourself gives you a reason to feel good about your body, and can give you a lift when you need it most.
1. Eat well.
Eating a healthy diet is good for your body, and will ultimately help you feel better. Eating right will give your entire body, including your skin, the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
Are there any foods you should avoid when you have acne? Maybe. A few small studies have shown a correlation between certain foods and acne severity. Dairy products and high glycemic index foods seem to be the worst offenders.
These foods don't necessarily cause acne in a otherwise clear-skinned person, but may worsen existing acne breakouts. So, if a food seems to make your pimples worse, avoid that particular dish.
2. Get enough sleep.
Face it, everything seems worse when you're tired and cranky. Try to get eight hours of sleep each night, or take regular naps when you need them. When you're well rested it's easier to keep things in perspective.
Just make sure you're cleansing your face before hitting the pillow each night. Removing dirt, excess oil, and makeup will help get your skin into shape, and help you remember to apply those acne treatments too.
3. Exercise regularly.
One study suggests those with acne tend to exercise less than their clear-skinned counterparts. But exercise is a great way to improve your mood!
Not only does regular exercise make your heart and lungs strong, but it helps you beat stress and can ease anxiety and depression. Besides, when you feel good about the things your body can do, it helps you to focus less on your skin.
Always shower as soon as possible after exercising, though. Sweat can be irritating and worsen acne, especially
back and body breakouts.
4. Start treating your acne, if you haven't already.
Acne won't go away on its own, so the sooner you start treatment the better.
If your acne is mild, try an over-the-counter product. But don't wait to see a doctor if you're not seeing any improvement after several weeks. Your doctor has an arsenal of acne-fighting treatments that will get you on your way to clearer skin.
It's easy to feel helpless when you're breaking out and don't know how to stop it. Just knowing you've taken a step to improve your skin can help you feel more in control.
5. Get help, if you need it.
Acne can be an upsetting problem, causing you to feel self-conscious or embarrassed. You're not being vain. Many people with acne feel the same way you do.
But if acne is impacting your life to the point that it is negatively affecting your self-esteem, it's time to get help. Talk to your doctor. Don't dismiss your feelings, and don't be ashamed.
Depression, anxiety, social withdrawal, and thoughts of suicide are all warning signs you shouldn't ignore. Please get help right away. With help, you can feel better.

As a 15yr. old girl (this was 16yrs. ago) I started Accutane from http://goo.gl/l9qLGH . After the initial 30 days of my acne getting worse I started to notice that day by day the acne lessened and the pores on my face became smaller and I didn't have to constantly blot the oil off my face. I had some dryness but it was a small sacrifice to look in the mirror and not see these big ugly zits causing me to feel ugly and self conscious. I also started to look people in the eyes and not constantly worry that they were staring at the state of my skin, or to go outside in the bright light and have people thinking negative things about me. After 3 mos. my skin was beautiful, without a single blemish, and the pores shrunk back to normal. Although I had the dryness that everyone experiences, it was SO WORTH IT. People talk about depression as a side effect, but honestly I was so deliriously happy with the results that I can say I was never depressed for even one day. After 1 yr. of being off the drug I started to get a few pimples and went back to the dermatologist. She started me on a second course immediately. That was 17yrs. ago. My skin has been perfect and flawless ever since. I never get a breakout. I shudder to think how my life would have been if it wasn't for this wonder drug. I would recommend it in a heartbeat. It changed my life.
