Oxycontin : The Poor Mans Heroin

There are 94 comments on the www.opioids.com story from May 25, 2010, titled Oxycontin : The Poor Mans Heroin. In it, www.opioids.com reports that:

Florida's Broward County has a vast amount of "pain management" clinics which are nothing more than legal drug dealing. These clinics they dispense prescriptions for cash. Where addicts travel from all over the country to legally buy Oxycontin and other narcotics in pill form.

Roughly three-and-a-half months after OyxContin's auspicious debut -- some cases involving the illegal use of the drug surfaced in rural Maine. Soon after, the drug's popularity began to rise in rural Appalachia, especially parts of western Virginia, eastern Kentucky, West Virginia and southern Ohio (in and around Cincinnati). If claims of epidemic levels of abuse are true anywhere, it's here, says Ashland, KY pain specialist, Dr. Shelley Freimark. "In this area right now it is a severe problem," she states.

OxyContin was an instant hit with doctors when first introduced in December 1995. Hailed by pain management specialists as a wonder drug, the oxycodone-based formulation was considered a major advance in the medical profession's expanding effort to battle the debilitating effects of chronic pain. As the good news spread sales of the drug mushroomed, rising from $40 million in 1996 to more than $1 billion last year, outstripping even Viagra.

Hello people, OxyContin is like 20x more expensive than heroin & heroin can be found on most corners of every major city in America for like $10-20 a bag. OxyContin is the rich man's heroin if anything. Not to mention that since the war Afghanistan has dumped boatloads of high quality heroin onto American streets. Go out & try & find oxys on the street, you will most likely be pointed in the direction of heroin instead. People drive from all over the country to get heroin from Chicago like people from KY, TN, VA, WV drive to Florida to get pills. If it wasn't for Purdue making OxyContin so easily abusable & convincing doctors that it was the best medicine to prescribe for pain this oxy epidemic wouldn't be nearly as large as it has become.
You didn't like the inference of oxy to white folk, did you? You're trying to make oxy sound, "High Class". Like "meth" compared to "crack". LOL.

Yes it is known as exactly that. You are correct. Buying oxycontin off the street is more expensive than buying heroin. One oxycontin pill can cost anywhere between 30 - 50 dollars. It is oftentimes injected, sniffed, or smoked. The cost of it still does not deter the usage of the drug. I guess they have labeled it the poor man's drug based on the kind of people who are addicted to it which is white americans within a certain income bracket.

I'd say half of all heroin addicts I've seen on Intervention started w/ prescriptions until it was too expensive and then switched to heroin.

it is because of who is taking. these "types" of individuals often have more money than they are letting on.

From what I see in my line of work which is a substance abuse counselor it is often white americans in the low income bracket. They oftentimes move up to heroin from the oxycontin usage. The sad thing about it is, the addicts are getting younger and younger. As young as 18 years old. There may be younger addicts but I don't see them because we can only treat legal adults. These children do not realize that they will most likely spend the next 20 years battling their addiction.

From The Internet: "well, the 10s maybe 2 bucks and the 80s about 5 bucks. but all cities are different. hope this helps!!"

I thought that bullsh!t number of 20 to 50 dollars a pill was too highend. Hell. Cocaine does not cost that much and that is a rich man's drug of choice.

Hillbilly heroin.$50 a pill. LMAO!

Its called hillbilly heroin because of the kind of people that are addicted to the drug. Rural white Americans that are socially called "hillbillies". It is labeled "the poor man's heroin" because of the income bracket of those who are addicted to the pill. The drug dealers sell these pills on the street from anywhere from 25 - 50 dollars depending on the dosage.(rechecked the sale price). The cost of the pills also varies by the state and area in which they are sold.

50ยข-$1.00 per 1 milligram. This is my understanding from the internet. So,$50 is used in anticipation of sale and not personal usage.

Now crystal meth is cooked in every other trailer home in the park. I've read lately that the "scientists" (LOL) have been cooking meth in hotel rooms.

No I totally agree you, they are both very bad, I am not endorsing either or. I never had any racial or ethnic inferences when I explained that. All I was saying was that Oxy, & you know it just as well, is way more expensive that heroin. They are both bad & for your information I grew up in a high class white neighborhood & the drug of choice there was heroin b/c of its incredibly easy accessibility in the Chicago area & suburbs. Even though these kids could have easily afforded Oxys & people used to sell many kinds of their parent's pills in the lunchroom hallway, some kids I used to know & some who are now dead b/c of their usage would leave school just to drive down to Chicago to get heroin. I don't know why, just like I really don't know why people in the Appalachian states prefer to drive to places like Florida to get pills such as Oxy. Where I grew up Oxy was never considered "high class", so what you are assuming about me is wrong. I used to know African American & Latino people that used Oxy so you are actually the one making racial inferences here, not me. I never mentioned anything about Oxy being "high class" or any particular race or ethnicity using one over the other. All opiates, heroin, Oxy & many others, transcend throughout all races & ethnicities. The only point I made, which is a fact, is that Oxy is a hell of a lot more expensive than heroin is. I don't think that people should use any kind of opiate recreationally. I know 3 people from my HS that died from overdosing on heroin & one that died from overdosing on Methadone. Because I have known people that chose to do these kinds of activities I think it is horrible for any person to become addicted to any of these substances regardless of their prices. I was freaked the hell out when I had my first major injury & they put me on all these pills just b/c what I saw occurring around me on practically a daily basis in HS. If I wasn't in the position where I truly need these medications to function & live my daily life without pain I wouldn't be on them. Unfortunately I have several serious injuries now that hinder my ability to much of anything without pain medication. Believe me, I wish I didn't have to be in so much pain everyday of my life & I wish I didn't have to take these medications to live & do things like normal people are capable of.

Thank you for confirming that Oxycontin is more expensive than heroin. It is called "hillbilly drug and poor mans heroin" because of the area's in which is a problem and the income of those who are abusing it.

Yes, I have heard of that one too. There is a rare tree in cambodia called the Mreah Prew Phnom which contains oil in which they need to make ecstasy pills. They are now desecrating this tree in order to fill the high demand of these pills in europe and the united states. Destroying the rain forest for this oil. Its quite sad how the demand of drugs have taken its toll upon the planet.

The "War on Drugs" was started under Nixon. The fact that i know that first hand makes me an old dude.We--A--Not--Winning.There is one way to WIN this particular war.The Government could treat users like cockroaches, and poison the illegal drug supply. The casual users would quit, and the addicts would die.End of problem.Since we aren't willing to do that, end the War and just provide treatment for those who want to quit.Register the rest as addicts and let them get their high legally. Then if they drive impaired arrest them.If they show up for work impaired fire them.If they can't take care of their kids;adopt the kids out to a good home.It would at least reduce drug crime.Drugs are only expensive because they are illegal.

I am not for paving the rain forest----but Carolina pine trees probably produce oxygen about as well as Mreah prew phrom.I tend to agree with George Carlin. The planet has been here for 4 billion years. We have been around for a couple million.Earth has survived asteroid impacts, super volcanoes, ice ages, etc. One day,as Carlin predicts;the earth will shake us off like a bad case of fleas.

You don't have to be so sarcastic & the fact of the matter is that OxyContin is a major problem all over the country in every income bracket today. It really doesn't matter where the name originated from b/c now its a problem everywhere & that name doesn't really apply anymore. Its should just be called government endorsed synthetic heroin. It is no longer the late 90s anymore where this "poor man's heroin & hillbilly heroin" label originated from

Sounds a bit inhumane and that is why they will never implement such a plan when dealing with addicts. They will just keep throwing money at it and treating them in rehab and hoping for the best.
