Why some metal hip replacements fail

There are 4 comments on the Chemistry World story from Sep 4, 2012, titled Why some metal hip replacements fail. In it, Chemistry World reports that:

An investigation into why metal-on-metal hip joints fail long before other types of joints, such as metal-on-polyethylene and ceramic-on-ceramic, has revealed how the metal particles shed by the joints grinding against each other damage surrounding cells.

Metal-on-metal implants were actually advertised to last longer and more efficient than other hip implant devices. However, reports of early wear have left the patients at higher level of metal exposure caused by cobalt, chromium and other metallic substances. The most common cause of early metal hip failure is the aseptic acetabular loosening which is found to happen in 56 percent of the patients. Normally, a metal hip implant is expected to last 15 to 20 years but 78 percent of the revision surgery is performed due to early failure. In comparison to the standard metal-and-plastic hip devices, studies show that metal-on-metal hip replacements have a higher failure rate and are more likely to damage tissues around the joint. A large percentage of its devices have been failed due to metal falling debris (metallosis), squeaking and popping of the hip area which cause to lessen the patient mobility, bone fractures, corrosion, severe pain and etc.

One theory why metal-on-metal hip implants fail points to the debris that is generated as the joints wear. It is thought that the debris is not compatible with human tissue, which causes the metal hip joints to fail, but itÂ’s not known why. Yes, Vergara. You hit the nail right at its head.

But it takes more vigilance on people's part.Sometimes doctors are way over their heads, you know. My uncle was all-smiles when he got his DePuy. But now he's as nasty as you can get, being yelled at has become part of our daily routine.

He has a DePuy and we are filing a serious one too.
