This is a disgrace. Anyone who takes this lawsuit seriously should be ashamed of themselves. It is admitted that he was dead without the transplant. The fact that he had 6 months after the transplant should be the focus. The doctors gave him 6 months that he may not have had. It is easy to say that personal information should be obtained on donors...but what would people like this do or say if they were told that they could have a potentially diseased organ or none at all. I guarantee that most would take the questionable organ for a chance to live a little longer. This family should be grateful for the extra time that they had...he was dead either way.

How do trained medical professionals look at what is supposed to be a set of lungs that are from a teenager and not see that they are diseased and nearly twice as old?

Ridiculous. Learn more about the process of lung transplantation before making yourself look like a fool. The mother and the lawyer are both money-grubbing lunatics.

I do not believe this lawsuit is with merit. I also do not believe HUP knowingly transplanted diseased lungs. The process is far too rigid for this sort of mistake. This suit will further burden an already onerous transplant program where the need far exceeds the donor supply. Please do not let this claim determine your decision to be a donor. Knowledge is power. Organ donors save lives. Thank you to all donors & their families! God bless you.

I too am waiting for a lung transplant and was turned away once after being called because of detecting an infection in the donor lungs. Although disappointed, I was so grateful that the infection was detected. It is with utmost care that the surgeons involved are 100% sure that the organs are suitable. That is their responsibility and there is no room for any error in such a risky surgery. This should never happen again.

Why would you even bother for 6 more months, when assuming these were good lungs, it could have saved someones life? Thats selfish and ignorant.

Has anyone heard the phrase S**T Happens? Yes, it is terrible that something like this happened. It's not fair. Life ain't fair. Why would HUP knowingly implant a deseased organ? To get sued? For bad PR? Oh yeah! Thats genious!
HUP is one of the finest hospitals in this country. It saved my mothers life 15 years ago with her first bout of cancer. It saved one of my friend's lives 10 years ago. I live on the main line- but if anything serious happened to me- my a** is going to philly for treatment.
Anyway- I digress. People need to chill out. Accidents happen. And yes, I would be pissed if I was their family. But I'm not. We should be happy about the time we are given on this earth.

It's a shame we can't even trust one of the best hospitals in the country anymore! They should be sued and the doctors who knowingly performed the procedure with the defective lungs and lied to the family should PERSONALLY be held accountable!

I assumed that organs were tested before they are giving away. Although he would have died without the transplant.Seems like HUP speeded up the process

This is a shoddy piece of journalism. It appears that no effort was made to ascertain the facts in the case. It was simply a matter of allowing a family in mourning to relieve their frustration in the journalistic court of public opinion. This story has left a false impression upon your viewers/readers.

If you want to undo the damage you've done, I'd suggest learning how organs are evaluated and the inherent technological limitations in the system. To accuse any doctor of knowingly implanting diseased organs is ignorant at best and slanderous at worst.

Dear Tracy,
I am disheartened to have watched the article posted on your tv show. The story seemed biased and clearly did not have all of the facts envolved. The story was presented to assist the family in litigation against HUP in my opinion. The article should have explained in depth the pain staking process of identfying a donor, medically managing a donor and then allocating organs to the appropriate recipient. The story should have mentioned the massive amount of resources utilized in obtaining the required information needed to qualify a patient who has suffered a nonrecoverable neurologic injury. The story does not mention the wonderful family who opted save the lives of up to six transplant recipients. It is obviously a tragedy that this family did not have the outcome they desired. Cancer is one of the many risks that a transplant recipient is subjected to while using immunosuppressive medication to protect the transplanted organ. It is clear to me that the family has used Channel Ten in order to slander HUP transplant. Channel Ten should have mentioned the number of lives saved each year by the fanastic and superb medical professionals who go through great lengths to find the appropriate organ for each candidate.

Hey Bubbles how stupid are you? of course the organs are tested before they are transplanted. Did you consider the story was missing very important information that puts the hospital in the clear?

Transplant programs do not knowingly transplant cancer ridden donor organs. Of course you have a one-sided story here. Obviously the recipients family is devastated. Transplantation is a huge risk and sometimes patients don't do well at all. Many people opt to take the risk, the good with the bad to live longer, more quality lives.
