Either we all pay higher premiums to pay for the care of additional illnesses caused by smoking, or those who choose to smoke pay for the consequences of their actions.

Are you all saying that we should all be held responsible for the actions of others?

There comes a time when people must decide whether or not to be a burden to others. If we have that choice, say, not to smoke, knowing that is a healthy choice, one that benefits everyone, then let those who choose to knowingly cause disease and illness in themselves and others pay the penalty for doing so.

Smoking harms anyone exposed to it and causes much sadness and heartache.

I lost my mother (69), father (68) and brother (60) to lung cancer. All smoked from their teens to their deaths.

The higher cost of health care doesn't need to burden us all when the cost is self inflicted.

You don't understand how insurance works. You should learn about it before voting on such a matter.

I know when the cost of health care goes up, premiums go up. Same when a disaster strikes and destroys property, homeowner's insurance premiums go up. Now tell me that is not true.

We get rewarded for not having accidents over a period of time, by some companies. Other companies refuse to insure us if we have too many accidents but health care insurance is forced to insure so they have to recover the cost of insuring those who have higher than average doctor and hospital charges.

Yes, I feel smoking is something that no person should do, just like being an alcoholic, they start this habit and then are hooked. Drug abusers, it all starts with a choice, so you choose to do those things and expect society to foot the bill, and we do too often.

I think it's time some of these people wise up. Alcohol and tobacco are legal ways to cause harm to people and not just the people who choose to waste their money on those things. Truth is those things are just as damaging as many illegal drugs but because of "big corporations" the government refuses to make it illegal.

Um, of course the premiums will go up when the doctors charge more, that's basic economics. Yet you have not demonstrated how smokers cause the costs of all healthcare to increase. Thus, you are dismissed as an irrelevant, uneducated twit who knows nothing of how insurance works.
