Hip implants usually replace the ball and socket joint that comprises the hip. To ensure that these new joints stay in place, the implants must be attached to existing bones. This allows the hip implant to function like a real hip.
When a hip implant loosens, implant patients may be at risk for experiencing:
Loss of movement
To correct a loosened hip implant, individuals will usually have to undergo hip revision surgery. Sadly, revision surgery is rarely as effective as replacement surgery, and an individual may lose some of his or her range of motion after a revision. Defective hip implants like the DePuy ASR hip replacement system have been linked to a higher incidence of hip implant loosening and it may be appropriate to consider pursuing legal action against the manufacturer.
