Ya'll wanna bash this mother for standing up for her child's rights??? Really?? What's sad is that I bet the ones bashing her don't have a clue what its like to raise a disabled or special needs child and have to wipe away thier tears when they have been mistreated because of their disability!!! I, as a mother of 3 children, 2 of which have disabilities have been dealing with and fighting Dayton city school for 4 years now to get this school to do what they are supposed to for special needs kids. I still have not been able to get an IEP or 504 plan for my son who has severe ADHD/OCD because THEY don't feel that he needs it although his Dr's say otherwise.. it ain't easy battling the everyday issues with the school so if this parent felt the need to go further than so be it.. put yourself in her shoes before you judge her for standing up for her child!!! She did what she felt she needed to and every parent deals with it differently.. and to tell her to move so her child can go to a better school?? Really?? Some parents can't afford to just up and move and last I checked in this county your child has to go to the school in which they are assigned to unless you pay tuition.. some of us can't afford it.. I know I can't and I don't get state aid!! My kids have no choice but to go to Dayton city. So back up and look at the whole pic before you decide to pick out one or two things and talk down on this mother!!! I back her 100%.. we must stick up for our children cuz no one else will!!!! You go girl!!

*I'm not "complaining on topix" like I said, this is my first time ever being on here.. I don't like it bc all it is is pure judgement and gossip. My cousin brought it to my attention so I came and seen for myself. You don't know me.. you have absolutely No idea what I have or haven't done to help my child. I'm not blaming the school for her only knowing a few letters bc I know they try hard to work with her and so do I. It's more difficult trying to teach a child like mine, but it's not impossible. The reason why I mentioned her only knowing a few letters is bc I have asked the school to maybe put her in a different class so that she may could actually benefit from the program and they never responded.*Last comment I'm making.. now everyone can go back to bashing us.. after all.. isn't that what you came to topix for? God bless..

Some of this is actually not true. This is a Pre K class. Laws about class setting don't actually yet apply. The article also didn't give enough info about the current Pre K setting, if there was an IEP or even any supports for the child or even if the child qualifies. And it's also just not the schools responsibility to find the correct setting. It's also a parents responsibility to get involved and research options and realize if their child isn't in the correct setting. Some parents simply aren't involved and want their children in inclusion no matter what, even if that's not the best setting for the child. Happens all the time.
Also, you blaming the school for those 3 letter in 2 years is unfair. There are some kids with disabilities that will never learn any letters. There isn't enough info given to make that judgement.
<quoted text>
*See this is the exact opposite of what I want for her.. I do NOT want her secluded from the other students.. she has the right to live a normal life just like everyone else.. that's all I'm saying. Dayton City school is just a sorry excuse for a school and I'm very proud to say that the school year is coming to an end and I will be relocating so that my kids DO get the proper education. I'm only being a good mother for stepping up and speaking for my baby. She appreciated very much and the beautiful smile on her face pushed me even harder to fight for her rights. If you guys on here still don't understand, then that's fine.. we're not trying to be understood, we're just trying to be heard.. I've seen alot of bad parents and parents who don't care not one bit about their child's/Children's education, but seeing as tho all of you have commented, that just goes to show that most of you are good parents. This is Rhea County and we all know how most of these so called parents raise their children so again.. I see where you all have gotten your harsh words from, but the county I live in, does not determine the type of mother I am.. and I'm sure it doesn't determine your ability to raise your child right either. God bless y'all and have a good day.

I did not plaster her pic on the news.. the news lady got that picture from my personal Facebook without asking. I knew nothing about them even having it until the news aired. Yes, I brought her with me so they could see she was capable of going on her trip. She has high functioning autism. They had many people help chaperon this trip and didn't even ask me to help.. I would've gladly went with them so she didn't miss out. It's really sad everyone thinks this is a cry for attention bc it's really not. I actually can understand where some people may think this, butbin this particular case, that's just not true. The whole point in even agreeing to do the story is to expose that school of what they're doing wrong and hopefully shining some light on the problem. People are so judgemental.... it really sadens me. Everybody has a right to their own opinion, but I believe it's God who's going to judge us when our day comes. This is going to be my last comment because this is rediculous.. we have plenty of people backing us up all over the world but of course Topix is going to be the place to bring all the negativity possible.
Well one more thing that I didn't cover... By no means am I blaming the school, teachers etc for her having autism.. I'm more educated than that. I take full responsibility in helping her learn bc I know it takes more than just the teachers to help. At the end of the day, I am her mother and I love her and her teachers to death bc they're so sweet and we communicate every single day to help each other, but this just isn't the right school for autistic children and it's too late in the school year to switch schools and I have to find a house in the county school zone (which I'm working on) so my baby can get the best education possible. I have been bashed for standing up for my baby's rights, while a whole lot of parents around here don't want anything to do with their children. What is the world coming to? We bash our fellow good parents, but yet we say nothing about these parents who don't care enough about their kids to even feed them, let alone stand up against the world and fight for them.

If the child is special needs then special education should have stepped in to take the child on any field trip. Do not know circumstances. If the child is not special needs but has been chosing to disobey school rules and norms the child should not be treated to a field trip. If the child has a school IEP then by law, the parent has rights.
Not speaking about this case because do not know details, but there are violent kids thrown to school systems who are not special needs. The schools try and keep other children safe when these kids go off on teachers and students. Before you judge a school, as a parent, you might want to be glad the school is making the choice to keep your child safe if he or she got in the path of these violent children. Kids who follow rules and behave have the same right to be safe as a child who chooses not to obey.
Again, an autistic child who is really autistic or special ed, is not what I am talking about. Safety of all kids is a schools main priority. Don't allow your child to disobey, hit, kick, curse, spit, throw tantrums furniture and expect the schools to overlook bad parenting and spoiled children. Easy to say they have a problem but maybe the real problem is you and your spoiled child.

Wow! There is something wrong with society, not them? If the child is autistic and doesn't respond to discipline the same way other children do, how is that a problem with society? What are they supposed to do? Allow the child to be disruptive throughout the trip, essentially taking away from every other child present?
*Its not ok to allow your child to misbehave no matter their conditioni agree with that and I inforce rules to the best of my ability. Why I said something is wrong with society is bc of people like you. All these kids want is acceptance and love.... that's it. Kid's get out of control bc they're just being Kids.. kids with this type of disorder get more out of control than your average child. But see that's the thing.. I treat her the same as I do my other kids.. they all are made to mind and be respectful. My daughter would not have been a problem on that small trip. I really don't understand why you're so offended by this and why you have so much to say???? Why can't you just be a decent human being and show some support? If this was your child and your story I would back you up 100% but I guess we're completely different with a totally different outlook on life which is perfectly fine, but why are you being so hateful? What have we done to offend anybody? Nothing. You protect and stand up for your family because you love them right? Well that's all I'm doing.

*You're exactly right.. it is never ok to allow that type of behavior and endanger the other students or the teachers. My daughter does none of that.. she only whines alot (but not at school) and the other thing she does is disrupts class which again is not ok. She gets in trouble for disrupting wheather at school or at home. Even tho she has aspergers, I still do my very best to instill good behavior and well manners in her. She is made to obey.. but she has not ever hit, spit, cussed another child or adult bc she knows better than that. I teach her if she feels upset then she needs to come talk to me or her teacher if she's at school. She really is a good kid, she just has a different outlook on life that we don't have that's all..

It's called constructive criticism, you're the one bashing others. And you're just as judgemental as anyone else based on this part below. You expect and want people to back you up 100 percent. Some will blindly do that, but others are being more fair since it's a one sided story. There's nothing fair about that.

Last I knew, media had to have parental permission before using a photo or full name of a child.

Taking a child to the same place yourself proves nothing. Anyone who has a child on the spectrum knows experiences with their parents is never the same as experiences with a whole class. Most parents and schools know the tolerance level of a child, except on a field trip, they cant just leave when the child has had too much as a parent can. Plain chaperons are also not the same as a trained in autism- adult to be 1:1 to a child on the spectrum. That's what is doing best for a child. Getting a call 2 days before the field trip would had been the time to offer to go along, not wait for anyone to 'ask'.
It's also conflicting when previously it was said "She can't help it," said Atha, "I work with her and work with her on it. I discipline her like I'm supposed to. I do everything in my power, but at the end of the day, the autism is her. That's who she is." Schools don't simply disallow a child from going on a field trip due only to a diagnosis. In that one article, it was revealed within the article the schools reasons. Those who are educated know there's more to this than the one sided version and although one may think this may bring attention against the school, you may end up affected those families which remain in that district in a negative manner. Special ed is a very private matter to each parent.

This also has nothing to do with God, or
insinuating a judgement day for opinions. If you didn't want differing opinions, keep it out of the media.

Bet at high school you would see alot things going on.

Get the news on it. I bet you they will change the tune alittle bit. If that was my kid I bet you I would. The news makes magic happen. Girl don't let them run over you nor your kid. They will if you let them. You have a good reason be mad and upset. Alot people sit in corner with mouths shut don't be like that. We got stand up for our kids, and what is right. Make some phone calls you will see your kid gets treated better......

The person FRIEND is NOT a parent of a child with a disability!!! There is no way in hell another parent would speak to another that way that has walked this road!! Friend is a teacher or principal that is running their mouth. Parents encourage each other and offer advice on what works etc.. they don't act like this!

Want people not to butt into their business, you don't go to the media, over a Pre K field trip to a produce market. Get real. And so sorry, I am I parent of a child with autism, and I don't work for any school district. I don't jump on band wagons, either. Yes, parents disagree with other parents all the time. It's a one sided account, and anyone who takes only the one side presented are then only one sided people who refuse to acknowledge there even is another side.

Going to the media over a Pre K field trip, allowing full names and a photo is to gain 'poor me'. Any other school this parent attempts to put their child in will now know this parent is media-happy and the child will only suffer due to it.

Yes you go to the media to get something done about how disability kids get treated. Maybe it will get something done how they look at kids with disabilities.... They need only put teachers who care in that spot as a teacher. The ones dnt have heart dnt need be in there. Just like at nursing homes workers are so mean to the people. If you dnt love them you dnt have no business working in that field.....
