Low platelets can be a sign of myelodysplastic syndrome, a pre-acute myeloid leukemia condition. It can also be "idiopathic," meaning doctors don't know what causes it. Clinical trials in Japan show that MK4, a natural form of vitamin K2, in the amount of 45 mg, can increase platelets. There are videos on YouTube of people discussing this and how they took MK4 and it helped them. See http://tinyurl.com/buu4nk9 and http://tinyurl.com/bofcnmk .

A woman has blogged about her father's experience and others from around the world are telling their stories too at http://tinyurl.com/cepsxoo .

I hope this helps.

try eating apples, or drink apple juice, garlic, lettuce, and the best is papaya leaf juice... keeping these in the diet can help alot. i have garlic and lettuce with every meal and at least 500ml apple juice a day.

Always with any blood result that is concerning to you if your regular dr is not providing you with the information that you need, either go and get a second opinion and /or ask for a referral to a specialist. Self diagnosing or self treating from information on the Internet can be very dangerous. Remember people can die from misusing over the counter (stuff that you get from the chemist without a prescription ) medications too. I wish you all good health and safe treatment.

I recently was seen in two ERs the first one said I had in inflammation showing up on my blood work. They sent me home and said take naproxen (aleve) I'm glad I didn't take that. I later the next day went to a different hospital sat through 6 hours of testing. The dr said my platelets were low 127, my liver enzymes were elevated and also my d dimer was high. However, She could not figure out why I have to see my regular dr this week. Just wondering if anyone has had this sane thing or know what could be causing this??

I've had a low platelet count that has been tracked for the past two years. When I was first referred to a hematologist my count was around 34. Now I fluctuate between 40-70. I get a CBC every couple of months just to monitor it, and will sometimes get more bruising, pupurae, bloody noses, bleeding gums, blood blisters inside my mouth, and fatigue. I choose to manage mine without treatment, because taking a steroid isn't a guarantee that I'll get better. When I decide to get pregnant or if I ever need surgery, I might have to take something, get an infusion, or just make sure that my Dr. knows I'm at a high risk for hemmoraging.
My condition is called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia. What this means is they don't know why my body is destroying the platelets. I was tested for lupus and HIV, and the Drs. checked for other low counts in my CBC to rule out cancer. I think most people with this condition live normal lives, like me, so don't worry too much but do take good care of yourself and make sure to check in if your symptoms get worse.

Some sites will suggest that you can take high doses of Vitamin C, and eat foods rich in Omega fatty acids (like salmon), but I haven't found any of that to be true. Eat a well balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid things that can cause anyone's platelet count to drop (aspirin, alcohol, illicit drugs) and you will be fine.
Usually, unless you have other conditions, a count below 30 (that's 30,000) isn't considered dangerous. It's when you go below that count that you are at risk for internal bleeding.
If you are concerned ask to be referred to a hematologist, who knows a lot more about the condition that a normal general/family practitioner. There are treatments available but none of them guarantee remission.

My daughter has been diagnosed with I.t.p . Can someone tell me what this abbreviation means . Thank you
It means Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. I have the same thing and basically it means that they don't know what exactly is causing her platelet count to be below average. Make sure they do testing for the cause, and get blood draws as suggested by her Dr. Sometimes this is hereditary so if you haven't checked yourself, you should. What that might show you is that you've lived a normal life with a low count, and there is no reason that she can't too :)

Don't worry too much, I have managed mine without drugs, and lived a normal life with my platelets in the range of 40-70 (40,000-70,000) for more than 2 years. Previous to my diagnosis (from looking at past blood draws), they can see that I've had a low platelet count for even longer.

Hi I have been sick on and off for the last 8 weeks. When I went to see ths doc he sent me for blood tests but thought it was a stomach acid issue. When my results came in he said he coukd not find a cause for my continued bouts of sudden sickness but that my platlets were under 90, he didn't give me any info on it and said its nothing to be conserened about.I am tbinking of getting a second opinion and was wondering if someone could tell me if I need to follow this up or if it is not a concern please :-)

I was told by the diabetic nurse that my blood platelet count was was low at 127 it had been as low as 119 but going back over previous blood tests it seems to be about 148-150 she asked me if i had a naturally low count. How am I suppost to know when nobody has ever mentioned it before.on reading about it,it said that metformin which i'm taking can affect the count,I also have an under active thyroid and heart failure .I have an app to see the Dr in a fortnight but am wondering if I should try and get an earlier app.

Wow im amazed that mostly everyone here has low blood platelets, yet no one knows how to bring them back up. I find this very disturbing. Is there no way to get around this? Or do the doctors just want you to wait until there is a prescription medication that you can take. My mother has been missing her chemo treatements because her blood platelets have been low for her past three appointments. last time is was about 73 but now its 48. When she had this problem the first time, after a strong dose of the chemo treatment, they told her to eat greens. Mainly vitamin K to help build her blood platelets. She hasn't been eating them on routine so her results are still poor. Can anyone verify this? Has anyones platelet level increased since the begining of this discussion?

You need to go to another doctor and get a second opinion. The pin marks on your arms is called patikki (sp). A low platelet count means that your blood will not clot like it should. If it is very low, you should not shave, or do anything that may cause bleeding. Mine has been so low, they were afraid for me to ride in the car to get to the hospital. If it is very low, you will need a platelet transfusion. They will hook you to an I.V. line and give them to you just like meds or blood. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the amount you need.

My daughter has a platelet count of 90000 . we have an appointment with a hematologist next friday. I cant wait that long to see whats going on..is this count something that I should be super worried about? What is considered the lowest level that is not cause for concern? I know the range is 140-550 so this count is low but is is cause for severe concern? I am very worried.
