I all so want to make people aware of what a platlet count of below 20 25 means be ever so careful with this person if they have a bleed ,for my mother her throat they spu blood from eating slight nick from what ever bit of meat crunchy potatoe, its scarry you must be so calm as if you are not and they panic it raises there blood pressure they will bleed out quick you must take control of your self tell them to calm its ok dont worrie laugh pull there fear down for me it was shocking but i clicked in to the be calm roll some one spuing blood and living 20 minuts from hospital is horrific be calm take control reassure calm them they will only calm if you are ,talk them out of there fear . its not nice but god if you can slow the bleeding from were ever in there body you have time if you panic so will they. Freak out later just as i did it saved mum for six months . hay not every ones platlets drop so low treasure what you have why you have them, many diffrent conditions creat this problem . HEATHER.

My daughter has very low platelets. Her count yesterday before transfusion was only 1000! I am not getting answers from her Dr., only that we have to wait and see if her body can start rebuilding these on it's own. Very scary. Does anybody know how long she might go through this. I'm sorry, I know each case is different. But has anybody gone through this for a period of time with this getting better?
My Mom is currently in the hospital (for 24 days now) and has very low platelets about 4000, she received chemo to see if it will kill what they believe was a virus that attacked her spleen. They also want to see if this works and she starts to make them on her own or they make take the spllen out. At one point whatever they did she was up to 77,000! I don't get this, is this problem so unusual that these doctors are so puzzled as to what to do? I feel your frustration.

My regular dr. has been watching my blood platelet count. In May it was 200, then dropped to 163, then 144 now 136. I know these #'s are not extremly low, but I was also slightly anemic with the low platelet count. So I was sent to a specialist. I had a barrow marrow biospy done several days ago. I have also been tired, achy, and I went thru a period of time between May and August when I was experiencing quite a bit of joint pain and I am usually pretty achy all the time. Anyone out there have any idea what might be going on??? I will have the results of the bone marrow test at the end of this week. I am sitting on pins and needles waiting for an answer....Has anyone been thru something similiar?? Thanks

I don't know much about any of this just that my Dad's got very low and they gave him steroids and as of right now they have jummped back up to 102, 000. from a low 15,000...Hope everything is ok for you....

My wife has severe migraines. The only medication that has brought her noticeable relief is Depakote (valproic acid) but one of the side effects is that it lowers red blood platelets. Lots of web sites that talk about Depakote warn about this effect, but say nothing about what to do about it (other than have your blood monitored and stop using the drug if a problem occurs).

But my wife CAN'T stop taking Depakote. She has migraines EVERY DAY, and this drug is the only thing that gives at least partial relief. Is there a way to raise red blood platelets in spite of the Depakote?

I have just been told my blood platelets were low 72 and I am 52 years old. The doctor is thorough and wants to do more tests in two weeks. She said that viruses can lower the count and as i have been sick on and off for 2 months she wants to wait for me to improve before having another blood test. therefore the body obviously restores them itself unless there is another underlying problem other than a virus. Always ask questions and dont leave the surgery if you are uncertain or dont understand.

I am going through this now. I am 32. I was at the doctor for a routine check up and blood work. THey called me the next day and sent me to Emergency department at the hospital. My blood levels were all critical. Platelett being less then 10,000 when it should be over 175,000. White blood cells and Hemoglobin are also less then half of what they should be. I have to get blood transfusions untill the results of the Bone Marrow Biopsy comes in. They Beleave I have Acquired Aplastic Anemia - A rare desease where the bone marrow stops making, or cant make enough new cells. Low levels is very serious and you should get looked at. Have them check your Vitamin B12 level, this could be the cause in some vegans, or vegetarians. Good luck to all

My husband has been to the Dr 4 times in the last 6 weeks. What started out with yearly check-up and blood test showed he had a low blood platelet count. Our family Dr. said she wasn't worried about it quote, its probally a lab screw up. But I was not satisified with that so I had my husband schedule another blood test. It also came back with low platelet count. Now 4 sets of blood results later the count is still low and my husband has a appointment next week with a blood Dr. He is 57 and his father died 6 yrs ago with leukemia, so my husband is worried. We know nothing about what it means to have a low blood platelet count . SCARED

Kay,
It could be That he has a infection also. We just went threw this with My Dad ,we were scared to death to. Dad had nuerous blood tests and platelets were supper low...15,000. Very bad . They had him set up twice for a bone marrow to see if it was cancer ,But we canceled them, It looks like Dad Has Tick fever which attacked the Platelets.Has your husband been runnig fever ? Look up low platlets on the internet. It will tell you a # of things , not neccessarily Lukemia, although it was one of the first things they looked at with Dad because they were so low.Hope everything turns out good for you , i know it's scary...

My doctor just called me to let me know that my platelets are 70,000. This was my 5 CBC in 10 days. I have had 7 chemo treatments and was to have 9. I have Ovarian Cancer and started my chemo in February. She believes that the chemo has made me toxic, so I am done with treatments at this time. I have to let my body take a rest. I will have another CBC this Saturday. Normal range is 150,000-400,000 and varies with different labs. I just pray that it is from the treatments and that there is no cancer anywhere else. I am believing that God has healed me. But your mind does wonder............... :)

She called again to cancel my appointment later this month. She said my body needs a rest from chemo. I have not been sick at all with my treatments and feel very fortunate. Actually now feel worse than ever, but can't complain. Headaches and joint pain. I will be getting a CATscan to see if all looks well. But I do know what you mean about counts being low. Got my CBC report today in the mail from yesterday and 7 of my test results are below normal, 3 above, and 3 normal.

DID THEY TELL YOU WHAT HIS COUNT WAS? I JUST HAD 2 CONSECUTIVE LOW COUNTS BUT THEY WERE ONLY OFF BY 18,000. NORMAL VALUE IS 150000-400,000. THERE ARE 150 POSSIBLE CAUSES TO LOW PLATELETS.TRY NOT TO WORRY ABOUT SOMETHING THAT POSSIBLY DOES NOT EXIST.(EASIER SAID THAN DONE)IM STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF I NEED TO SEE A HEMATOLOGIST OR NOT. MY DOC OFFERED TO EITHER FOLLOW IT OR GO TO HEMATOLOGIST.I CALLED HEME. AND ASKED IF THEY THOUGHT I NEED FOLLOW UP...WAITNG TO HEAR BACK.
IST COUNT WAS 110,000 THEN 132,000....LET ME KNOW

Janice,
I read your post and was wondering how your bone marrow biopsy turned out..Are you O.K?( I was just told that 2 counts revealed 110,000 and 132,000...which are not scary low or rissky for bleeding but still off.May be 150 differant things...Going to hematologist next week or so

I have a 12 year old daughter who has had 2 low platelet readings. One was 81 and the other 76. The first was done in the dr's office during a routine physical, the other was done at the hospital. We have been referred to a hematologist and have an appointment in a couple of weeks. I have been interested in all the comments shared on this forum. They have given me hope that this isn't necessarily a dreadful, life-threatening disease.
