My father had low platelets for five years, in and out of the hospital, doctors never knew anything other than to offer repeated transfusions. He passed away finally in 2007. May he rest in peace.

I finally received an appt. to a hemotologist for my low platelet count. The last blood test showed them to be 89 which is quite low since the normal range starts @ about 130-140.My oral surgeon said that 89 was about borderline & he said to start having 1 or 2 teeth removed, packed w/some kind of medicine & then stitched up.I`mm not going to be his guinea pig to just see how it goes.I want to know why it it`s so low as there can be an underlying problem.I`m going to find out WHY it has dropped to 89.I just don`t want it raised,I want to know why it has dropped.I wished I lived in an area bigger than this tiny town in Ga.I`m originally from Brooklyn,N.Y. & there are many more hospitals & experienced Drs. in a larger city. What scares me is the possibility of something alot more dangerous than just not to worry about it.I just don`t want to put a bandaid on this situation.I`ve been very fatigued as well & my Dr. has been giving me testosterone shots as it is also below normal also.My email address is stugots@windstream.net if anyone cares to write to me directly.Any news woulld be of help.Hope to learn some encouraging news.Thank you all........SAL (Diskette)

my husband just found out his platelets were 14000, and has to go back to the hospital today to see what they are. my mom also has the same problem and has been going throught this for months of them going up and then back down low. they have put her on steroids to bring them up and now they're up to 70 thousand from 10 thousand. ask your doctor about steriods. good luck to ev1. and hang in there!

My friend has a low blood count of 80,000. Her doctor wants her to have tests with a blood specialist. Her brother had leukemia and she gave him bone marrow about 10 years ago and saved his life. Could this have impacted her marrows ability to produce platelets?

My daughter has very low platelets. Her count yesterday before transfusion was only 1000! I am not getting answers from her Dr., only that we have to wait and see if her body can start rebuilding these on it's own. Very scary. Does anybody know how long she might go through this. I'm sorry, I know each case is different. But has anybody gone through this for a period of time with this getting better?
my daughter was recently hospitalized with a level of 7000. She had a transfusion and her levels jumpedto 349000. now 3 weeks later it has fallen to 133000. not sure what the next step is. how is your daughter now?

hello everyone! I am looking for some advice!! Here is my story. I started noticing alot of bruises on my 2 1/2 year old daughter so I took her to the doctor. They did blood work and her platelet level was 7. she was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with ITP. She had a platelet transfusion and 2 days later her level was 91 so they discharged her home and said to do weekle bloodwork. Since home her first reading was 349, the next week it was 226 and now this week it was 133. Anyone have experience with this? what next? her doctor said at this point no hospitalization but I need to bring her again this week for bloodwork. Has anyone else had this kind of drops in thier levels and what happened? we are scheduled to fly to florida on Feb. 20th and wondering if I should cancel our trip.

At the beginning I was at 7,000 platelets. Then later, my platelet count improved. When it got to 6,000, they reduced my steroids & a week later, my platelet count dropped down to 35,000. I know steroids can do that to the platelet count when they are being reduced. Tuesday, JAN 8 2011, I went in for an ultrasound of my abdominal area to check my spleen & liver & other organs. Won't know anything anything tomorrow (Thursday), results take 2 days. If my platelet count doesn't improve Friday, then I have to get a bone marrow exam done. Oh & lately, my upper right side of my abdominal area has been feeling uncomfortable most of the time since Sunday.. it feels like it's full.

I was told that I have a low platelet count, but they would not say how low. They also said that my heart beat rate was 50 beats per minute where it should be between 60 to 100 beats pe minute. does anyone know if these to issues are related and wha could all of this mean?

My platelets seem to decrease every now and then, but then they go back up. This condition was discovered when I gave birth to my youngest son and began hemorraging during the C-section. In order to stop the bleeding the doctor performed a partial hysterectomy. After that I began getting tested extensively to see why this had happened. In my case it's genetic, my father also has this condition. I can tell when my platelets are low because of the easy, no explanation bruising and low energy. I remember one time having to go to the emergency room for a minor cut about 1/8 of an inch that continued bleeding for over 14 hours! Other than these two incidents, I've had nothing major.
I have mild low platelet count since 9 years. sometimes 130.000 sometime 110.000, going up and down. the doctor said that nothing can be done and that I have not to panic. I have always doubt on what if my platelets continue to decrease with time. I don't know if I have to do more investigations to discover the cause. They told me no need for this.
