If Wegmans wants to be pro-active and stop selling a product every American (last I checked) has the right to purchase because of lung disease, then they should stop selling alcohol (kills more people in traffic accidents than cigarettes do with lung disease) because it contributes to Liver disease, they should stop selling lard and any other fats because they contribute to heart disease etc. etc. etc. Oh and don't sell over the counter drugs, since they can also be misused. Get Real... and don't try and play judge, jury and executioner!!!

Its the same idea as Walmart not carrying certain music they deem offensive. They decide what people "should" be buying, its bullshit. Its just a way to marginalize those they've decided aren't their target demographic and push an agenda over on the consumer. Makes you feel all warm 'n' fuzzy doesn't it?

They want to stop selling ciggarettes yet they bought a Liquer Store and sell alcohol also. Maybe there is a bigger profit margin there! I ask when are they going to stop selling Cough Syrup with Dextomephorphan in it as this is the new drug that kids have been using for several years now and is addictive, But then from the past didnt Danny Wegman have some Coke, not the bottled type problems???

Nice move!
For thise who start whining about "your rights", they are taking away any rights.

They don't sell guns, would that mean they are inhibiting your right to carry a gun? No.

Also as mentioned in th article...
Alcohol can be consumed in moderation with no adverse health effects.

It is about time large companies develop an actual sense of responsibility. They don't have to be all things to all people.

There are plenty other places to buy cigarettes or other products that stores don't want to sell.

Get real. Nobody cried when Circuit City stopped selling appliances. And by golly I have a right to but appliances!!!! How dare they....

Yet another example of Wegmans limiting choice and availability of products in their stores.

All I can say about this...IT ABOUT TIME!! It is a great idea. Now the next goal is to get all of the grocery store in the US to do the same thing.

Cigarette sales at Wegmans are terrible ever since New York decided to tax supermarkets extra. I guarantee that's the true reason behind this. Having cigarettes hidden behind your service desk doesn't really have an effect on children.

This is a good thing, I only wonder if it is because they care about people healt or that sale are down. I also wonder if they plan to stop selling beer, which also affects people negatively.

If you ask me (and I know nobody has LOL), this is a combination of PR spin on an inventory-reduction area that wasn't worth keeping, in terms of sales.

You anti-smoker types want a real victory, you can start crowing when a major gas station chain stops selling tobacco products.

So, good for Wegmans for putting a positive PR spin on a business decision. I would have expected no less if they had stopped carrying trans fats items, for that matter.

Who would buy cigarettes from Wegman's in the first place? They are the most overpriced and inconvienent stores to buy them. As a smoker in the Rochester area I will continue to buy my smokes elsewhere.

Trans fat use in restaurant foods has now been baned in Montgomery Co. Md. They have been given a time limit to phaze them out one hundred percent. I suppose you think this is another unwarranted invasion, like the seat belt law as to what a person can or can't do.
