I see a psychologist and work on Interpersonal Equine Therapy with her. Basically, I work with horses (i know it sounds nuts) but it works. I work on my relationships and how to deal with my emotions, which i shut out for a really long time. I am finally starting to feel again. I work with horses to stop the hatred i've stored up against myself, my mom, dad, stepdad, sisters, friends, and people in general. My life has been difficult. You have no idea, really. Kids shouldn't be put through what I have. If any of you had been through half of my shit, you'd be seeing a shrink too.
I have 6 horses and i love them and completely understand the therapeutic benefits, and i think that is awesome that you chose that route for your depression. But if your acne is really really bad, you could try it and at the slightest worry of depression, stop.
I got alittle depressed but that was around finals and who doesn't then right. But even into June I was still depressed then a sat down and re-thought things and now i'm good.
I'm on my last month and was bumped to 80 mg a day due to the fact that i still get hormonal breakouts, but my skin looks sooooooo bad ass!!!
Not just my face, but my chest and back too!!!
My confidence is soaring and i think things are about to change....alot!!
However, what got me through the depression stage was my family and very very supporting doctor. A strong close knit support group, be it family, friends or physicians is ideal to prevent any mental side effects.
And accutane is freaking expensive if your insurance doesn't cover it. My old insurance didn't and it was about 700-800 a month!!
My new one does though and it's only 40!

Hey. I have been on accutane for a total of 12 months. I took a break for about 3 months though, but in total 12 months. I have a rare case of acne fulminans. They start out as blackheads and evolve into nodular cysts, and then they evolve into very painful, and sometimes incredibly deep ulcers. These were located on my back and chest. I was acutally hospitalized over night to be put on an I'V because they were so bad. I was bandaged up for about a week and was off school for 2 weeks. I was in grade 9 at this time. I am in grade 10 right now. I am 15. I am on the highest dose i can be on right now, 120 mgs. The scarring is quite severe, and i still have a few ulcers to speak of. My face has been cleared up, which is awesome, but i still have some on my back and chest.
That's my condition. Now i will tell you about the side effects i have been burdened with.
Hardcore chapped lips and dry skin.
my hair hardly gets greasy.( this is a plus)
back pain and stomach pain ( since these are rare, im not sure if it just a coincidence or not.)
a little bit of hair loss, just when i brush my hair though. nothing crazy.
I have not been depressed, just frusurated. It is extrodinarily difficult to have acne like mine. I cant take my shirt off, i cant go swimming, it takes me forever to shower because i have to air dry because it soemtimes hurt to dry with a towel. Sleeping sometimes sucks. I used to wrestle alot, but its harder now because it is painful. I went out and bout 80 bucks of clothes, i cant wear any of them because they are light colors. Fluids leek through. I know its gross, but i can;t help it. My dermatologist said he has only ever see na case like mine once before. he brought in students to study me because it was so rare.
Those who have it bad dont have it as bad as me. it sucks.
But i am not depressed. I can deal with the side
effects. its the fact that i cant take off my shirt in public and the scarring that will be there for a very long time that sucks.
so i know whats its like.
i have been on a large variety of pills and creams.
Accutane and the I.V. have been the only thing that has worked.
and when i miss a few days, i flare up.
and the blood tests are brutal lol
so stay with it, its worth it.
bw, i am not blaming accutane for my condition. it has only helped me.
good luck to all. It helps to have people to talk to.:)
Oh you baby, those blood tests are nothin! haha
about the lips put moisturizer on them and apply aquaphor ever hour!
My doc asked me if i had any abdominal issues so i believe it is a side-effect, but yogurt will fix you right up. If you don't like yogurt, mix it in a smoothie and you won't even know it's there!

The hair loss just sounds like normal everyday, typical hair loss, especially if you have long hair!

I think you are going to see tremendous results so don't worry!

You have only been using accutane a week and now your an advocate for others to use it.
Unbelievable.
Silver, I'm starting my 5th and supposedly last month at 80 mg a day. I've had only one side effect and that was two ingrowns, and i'm really not even that dry!
My joints are fine and i run 4-5 miles a day.
I'm not depressed, so yay.

I'm an advocate, AS LONG AS, the person knows of all the side effects, will practice caution when taking the drug.

Oh and i was at the river all day yesterday...no sunscreen, and NO SUNBURN. it was crazy, i thought i was supposed to get more sun sensitive! hmmm.... and i normally wear sunscreen, i just forgot...don't get mad at me!!

I was so moved by comments I've read here today. I'm 45-yr old woman with acne-- AGAIN!--& researching side FX for Accutane, since I'm considering asking my dr. about it. Please see this URL for info: http://www.webmd.com/drugs/ drug-6661-Accutane+Oral.aspxdr ugid =6661&drugname=Accutane+Or al&pagenumber=6
(remove my spaces if U want 2 cut & paste). Any drug this powerful will have potential for powerful side FX. There are other options now available: retinoids (Retin-A, Tazorac)+ antibiotics, laser therapy, & chemical peels. If one does decide to use Accutane, please, please allow yourself to be closely monitored for BOTH physical & mental health--don't be shy about telling your dr. about anything "wierd". OXOX & best of luck 2U all!

There is an excellent guide to Accutane side effects on the website www.vitaminA.org . I took Accutane and it's the best thing I ever did. My dermatologist told me about this guide and it helped me manage a few minor temporary side effects.

Although saddened to hear of so many with lasting side effects from accutane, I am also somewhat relieved to know I am not the only one. I have been fighting pain for 15 years now, post accutane, and now can possibly know there is a reason: accutane. I have absolutely loved my complexion since taking it, but would have to question now if it was worth it.

I've been taking this for 3 months now and have had all of the common side effects and a few nonharmful less common side effects of this medication but it is absolutely worth it. Most side effects i've had end up going away after my body gets used to the medication. So a discomfort and painful belmishes for 5 months is tons better than a lifetime of them. It's worth it you just have to work through it.

Ya i used retin-a and had chemical peels once a month, and i'm on birth control to help with my hormones, and that still didn't work, i've tried every treatment you can name.
All my acne is genetic and hormone controlled and very hard to treat, i've been on accutane for 4 months and was under very close watch by my doc, fam and friends.
My face is so clear, i don't have to where foundation anymore!
Plus no side effects

i'm on my 2nd round of accutane - I took it when I was 17 before and really remember no side effects except chapped lips. I'm in my 3rd month now at age 29 (30 next month, eek!) and I can complain about a few things...chapped lips, dry nostrils, itchy skin, but joint and back pain have been the biggest problem. first month was 40mg, 2nd month they raised it to 80mg and my middle back and joints got really achy. I run and have a race in August that will be hard on my body so I told the doctor my issues and he lowered the dosage back to 40 mg. skin is clearer but i get a cyst about once or twice a week. they usually heal a lot quicker than normal though. i use zeno and i think that helps the inflamation too.

I would like to add I am on celexa for anxiety/depression and I haven't really noticed any changes in my mood. it is actually a little better because I'm not embarrassed I'm almost 30 with teenage acne!

all prescription drugs have side effects. i think it is unfortunate people have had horrible experiences on this drug. but it would appear the good results outway the bad. they say it is a last resort for a reason.

Yeah all prescription drugs have side effects, but a lot of prescription drugs do NOT have chemotherapeutic (cell-division/proliferation reducing) actions on the body like Accutane. This is why people have had horrible experiences with this drug causing chronic latent side effects, it randomly shuts down cellular proliferation in various areas all over your body, and the effect can become irreversible. This is why your acne goes away, irreversible reduction of the cell proliferation in the sebaceous glands. Plus, you have mild teenage acne, Accutane is considered a last resort for severe cystic acne, the kind that leaves pot holes in your face and all over your body and is the only condition that Accutane is licensed for. Your dumbass of a Dermatologist has given you an extremely powerful drug that should only be reserved for chemotherapy. I bet he didn't mention this to you. Before you continue to further poison your body with vitamin A (Accutane) do one thing for me, ask you Dermatologist to specifically explain to you how Accutane is working to reduce your acne.

"Its a last resort for a reason"

This statement is complete nonsense.

"Accutane is last resort" is phrase developed by the industry to play on your subconscious. It makes you *think* there is no other options left.

It is pretty much standard that all patients start out on antibiotics which in fact galavanize what will ensure the "last resort" drug is used which happens to be the most expensive for a reason.

Everything is cleverly designed to lead up to that point where you hear "accutane is a last resort". They decievingly steer millions of people this way.

Those antibiotics all patients are given in the beginning are totally worthless against acne and by causing destruction of the host's healthy commensal organisms leads to disfuction in immunity, metabolism and digestion which then makes skin problems worse or that much harder to cure.

They know this. That is why it is done. It is called the "disease-for-profit industry" for a reason. If you *think* your Dermatologist really cares about you, it is an illusion because no caring, compassionate human being would issue such a drug when acne can be totally cured by dietary alterations.

Your "last resort" is complete elimination of things that cause acne and major diseases in the body. Milk, dairy products, Heat altered animal protiens (redmeat, fish, chicken, milk), heat altered animal fats, heat altered vegetable oils, sugar, processed wheat etc. I.E. a raw food diet.

These things only add to your acidity and deplete your bicarbinate bases. The more animal protien you consume, the more acid in your tissues, the more acid, the less base to keep up with neutralizing that stored acid and the more tension around your sebum glands. ALL pharm drugs including antidepressants deplete your alkaline base reserves compounding your problem.

Just because you slam your sebum glands shut with accutane will not make these problems within your lymph, blood and tissue dissapear. Your blood will still be full of unprocessed metabolic waste and acidity stored in your tissue.

It will only spring up as another disease because you ignored what your skin was telling you and that is your are out of balance with your food.

Overall I had a good experiance with the product. There were times (that I did'nt even seem to notice) when I was in Depression. My friends would tell me that something about my personality was different. Even stranger the blood and social tests my doctor and labcorp gave me didnt find any signs of depression. There were times when I felt like suicide, but was able to think of the situation in a better tone. I'm lucky I go to a school and have friends that knew all about the drug I was on, and were able to tollerate parts of my attitude. Luckly Im all over it now, and am back to my normal prank pulling party rorring self. Without Acne!! Just a little advice, let your friends know what your on, and that you may need their help along the way...

I agree with you, Blah. Accutane rocks! I took it for 6 months with minor nuisance lip chapping that went away a few days after I was done. My face is clear. My dermatologist directed me to a site (vitaminA.org)that has a section on managing Accutane side effects that I found very helpful.
