JAMA Surgery Study Highlights In a study reported in the resident's forum, Linda Adepoju, M.D., of University of Toledo Medical Center, Ohio, and colleagues suggest that tumor size, cancer stage, and Medicaid insurance were predictors of undergoing a mastectomy to treat breast cancer.

This is not necessarily a simple issue of poor vs. "not poor."
How many women with Medicaid have dependable transporation to get to five radiations a week for six weeks?
How many of them can afford to be out of work for that long if (if???) the radiation makes them sick? For that matter, how many would come out on the other end with their jobs still waiting for them?
I chose a mastectomy because I was already facing two different courses of chemo, a year of Herceptin, and five years of AI's. The only one I could choose or not choose was radiation, by having a mastectomy.
I'm still not sorry I made that choice six years later.
Oh yeah -- don't leave out the recovery time for the reconstructive surgery.
Researchers are clueless about how these "scientific" decisions affect real, everyday life.
