HELLO everyone, I am so glad to have found this site. My husband was just told that he also has a hiatal hernia. He has been having shortness of breath and coughing with clear mucus for many months now.It is good to have others to talk with to help guide me thru this with my husband.
Although this is a good way to move the stomach down out of the diaphram. If there is problems with the Psoas or Illiacus muscle the hernia will return over and over not to mention that you could also have a problem with your multifidus muscle and your rib function for breathing. Have a Chiro with certification in Applied Kinesiolgy check you out and they can fix it all with no meds and no surgery. Food isnt your issue but choosing baby food for now would be a good idea since its easier for the stomach to handle til you get it fixed. you could try one capsule of HCL Pepsin at each meal or if you forget try to have them with you and you can take it anytime after a meal. You obviously need a good massage therapist that really knows how to fix your muscles and the AK/Chiro for the rest but sometimes you can get away with only a Chiro/AK person who is talented.

Forgot to mention...Does anybody with hiatal hernia gasp for air or get out of breath and then have to pass gass?
It happens frequently. I can be sleeping, walking, sitting, running, and if this senstation happens, I gasp for air sometimes or feel out of breath, then I know it is because I have to pass gass. LOL. gasping lasts can last 20 seconds.
?
I totally have this symptom, I was scared to tell anyone about it bc they may think I'm crazy, I'm glad to know I'm not alone...feel better soon!

My husband was told that he has a slight hiatal hernia.Would he still have mucus, a cough and shortness of breath? He just turned 60 a few days ago.He has been having this problem for a few months now.It seems like it happened over night.he used to walk on the tread mill 30 minutes twice a day and it seems like over night he couldnt do it anymore without coughing and shortness of breath. He sees the doctor again tomorrow for a followup appointment.Any thoughts would be greatly welcomed.

I see this problem at least once a month
Find a very good massage therapist who can work on your IllioPsoas muscles and associated pelvic muscles. I recommend a Chiropractor well versed in Applied Kinesiology. They can fix all of this. Your symptoms to a person like this will know exactly what is wrong and your symptoms are not unusual for this type of surgery. I personally have worked on many and get get them back to normal in about 4 sessions. The docs will be confused at best and just medicate the daylights out of you and you will get very frustrated and the symptoms wont go away or will get worse

I am 21 and have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. I am thin, 125 pounds. I don't smoke, eat healthy and exercise daily. I have the same symptoms as many of you, pain under left ribcage, pain in ribs, nausea, diarrhea, pain in my back. When I lay down I can actually hear my stomach move into my chest. Sometimes when it is up my chest will "click" to my heartbeat. I have found no relief.
So my question is - is this it? Everywhere I have looked nobody has an answer. I have been to doctors who only prescribe antacids. I have been to Chiropractors that pull the stomach down but it just keeps sliding back up even when I'm standing.
At this point I am starting to feel like I will have to live with this - If that is the case I will probably kill myself within ten years or so... I really can't live like this and I feel like I am out of options.
To all of you who are suffering I feel for you -
I am going through the same thing right now and cannot find a doctor who thinks it is serious enough to operate on me. I do not know who to go to who will understands what i am going through. it seems the only time they will even consider to operate on you would be if the hiatal hernia is strangulated. I wish you the best and I hope you can find some help out there? Know that you are not alone with this...

My dear Sister was diagnosed with Hiatal Hernia and it took her 15 years to finally have surgery. She had suffered needlessly for years with severe acid reflux, and for about five years SHORT OF BREATH and FATIGUE. She finally had Lapband and they fixed her hiatal hernia. The hernia was so large it went up into her diaphragm putting pressure on the heart and lungs. This is what caused her breathing problems and lack of energy. Depending on size, this can cause severe problems - lack of oxygen, fatigue, and possibly blacking out! Her cardiologist and asthma physicians did not alert her to this fact and tests came back negative. PLEASE get the endoscopy and have surgery to repair!!!

Yes I had the surgery 20 yrs ago. Worked wonderful. But 20 yrs later I am facing the same thing. This means a repeat of surgery. I don't recall having shortness of breath but I am now and really bad. The surgery was God sent. I will do it again.

I've had a hiatus hernia for a number of years and it's aggravated by a lot of things, including running. Shortly after starting a run, my upper abdomen just below my chest will protrude up to almost 6 inches. I've tried changing my diet, taking medications, strengthening my core, and other remedies and nothing's helped. I don't get a lot of reflux by my symptoms include shortness of breath; excessive yawning; protrusion; excessive gas; and pain in the abdomen, chest, and upper back. When it's protruding, I can't even stand up straight which causes a whole other set of problems. I'm seriously considering the surgery.

You need to make that appointment and have them run some test. You should make sure that your not having any heart issues.Shortness of breath could be a number of causes.

I too was recently diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, though I have not yet been advised what type it is or the severity of it. I am working on diet and and lifestyle changes, but progress is slow. I too have abdominal and chest pains, shortness of breath and problems with gas. I am so glad to have found this siteand to learn I am not the only one.

HEY EVERYONE, I JUST GOT AN ENDOSCOPY DONE LAST FRIDAY 05/18/12. MY DOCTOR DIDN'T WANT TO DO IT, I HAD TO BEG HIM TO ORDER THIS TEST, HE JUST KEEP SAYING IT WAS GERD AND THAT IT WAS ANXIETY RELATED AND TO START TAKING ANXIETY MEDS, WISH I REFUSED BECAUSE I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG. SURE ENOUGH IT WAS A HIATAL HERNIA, I'M VERY SHORT OF BREATH. I ALSO WAS DOING SOME HEAVY LIFTING AND TAKING PROTEIN SHAKES EVERYDAY. I ALSO HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES AND ALLERGIC TO GLUTTEN. I WENT TO THE DOCTOR YESTERDAY TO SEE ABOUT MY RESULTS. HE DID AN EKG AND TOOK MY OXIGEN LEVER ALL THAT WAS NORMAL. HE ALSO ORDERED AN XRAY, I'M GOING TODAY TO GET THAT DONE. I JUST CALLED MY DOC AND TOLD THE OFFICE I NEEDED A REFERRAL FOR A GENERAL SURGEON, SO I CAN GET A SECOND OPPINION. THIS DOC DOESNT SEEM TO WANT TO HELP SO AS SOON AS I GET REFFERED OUT I'M DUMPING HIM. IS MY HEALTH, I DID THE RESEARCH AND THERE IS SHORTNESS OF BREATH WITH A HIATAL HERNIA. I'M NOT GOING TO LET THIS BEAT ME. I'LL KEEP EVERYONE POSTED. BE PROACTIVE FOR YOUR OUWN GOOD.

33 YR FEMALE RECENTLY DIAGNOSED WITH MEDIUM SIZE HIATAL HERNIA, ESOPHOGITIS, GASTRITIS AND POSITIVE FOR H. PYLORI FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. THIS ALL STARTED WITH SEVERE BURPING AND ACID REFLUX. I CANT DESCRIBE HOW HORRIBLE I FEEL ALL THE TIME. HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT WITH CONTROLLED DIET IT CAN BE SOMEWHAT TOLERABLE, BUT ALL SYMPTOMS ARE STILL PRESENT. HAD 2 EGDS, CATSCAN, TRIED SEVERAL MEDS...STILL NO CURE FOR ME :( I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP HOPE AND KNOW THAT ONE DAY I WILL HAVE MY ENERGY BACK AND BE ABLE TO BREATHE EAT AND SLEEP. I REALLY DONT THINK ANYONE CAN HAVE SYMPATHY UNLESS THEY HAVE FELT THIS THEMSELVES HONESTLY. DONT GIVE UP ON HOPE JUST KEEP CLIMBING THE LADDER OF DR'S UNTIL YOU FINALLY GET AN ANSWER AND CURE. I HAVE JUST SEEN A BAYLOR COLLEGE OF MED DR AND I HAVE FAITH HE CAN HELP ME!!

In March, I had surgery for my HH. It was the BEST decision of my life!! The healing on the insides will take a long time, but I feel so much better!! Have the surgery. You will not regret it!
