I've had a large hiatal hernia for ten year and have the acid reflux under control with
Omeprazole. The shortness of breath can be relieved somewhat by taking a gas reducing , over the counter medication. I think this helps by reducing abdominal pressure. Just discovered by chance, that eating a couple of pieces of licorice - the real licorice, not artificially flavored, will help stop the coughing. I had been coughing for more than four weeks and was exhausted and the licorice remedy is a God send. I hope it will work for you too.

Wow, this is good stuff. I had to go to the emergency room two months ago because I thought it was heart-related. Since then, I've noticed this pressure is only really bothersome when I am driving my car or sitting in my office.
I still tell myself it's heart-related, but have no clue. When I went to the hospital, I had a high blood pressure, but that was from all the coffee I've been drinking and the intensity of my work environment. The nurses looked at my EKG and x-rays and saw nothing wrong with my heart or anything associated with cardio.
However, just this past weekend, I drove 4 hours to my dad's house and back and this pressure grew increasingly worse.
I really am uncomfortable and this is no way to live. Should I go to my primary care or a gastro Dr.?

stress of driving increases acid in stomach
and can cause this

Hi, after 4 decades of short of breath, and helpless doctors' appointments, I finally found this site. After reading these stories, I am very confirmed that I have hiatal hernia. I always feel there is a bag full of water and food in my left chest under rib, rather than in the belly. I can not run, walk fast, sit, and bending. I cannot even read since i am always exhausted and lack of oxygen. I even am worried to get fainted when crossing the busy street... These symptoms are constant with no break. I always feel there is a bag full of water and food in my left chest under rib, rather than in the belly. My family doctor said I am IBS and will die with it.

I figured out the reason of short of breath is because the food and water stuck in the upper stomach above the diaphragm which prevent the diaphragm raising when exhale, so we don't get the enough space to get the air when we inhale.

It's funny that my GI doctor just had the endoscope done on me a month ago but still missed it. I have to convince him about my diagnosis in next appointment. But mean time, I am trying some pushing treatment I learned from them YouTube and that's helping. I'll keep posted about my dr's final words. God bless you.

Hello Everyone, after 3 years of not being able to breathe properly and fully due to a Hiatus Hernia I have found significant relief in the prescription drug 'Metoclopramide 10mg'. Try it if you are struggling to fill your lungs with air due to your hernia. It improved my symptoms/breathlessness from 8/10 down to 3/10. Life is much better.

I have the big stomach and have recently been experiencing shortage of breath which feels like asthma, I understand from researching around the net that this is in fact the hernia pushing on your diaphragm, which inverts it so you have breathing difficulties. It also feels like a panic attack, as I've had the hernia for 33 years (a pregnancy complication that happened due to breach baby herniating me) I'm not thinking that the panic attacks I had when I was younger were down to the hernia. I am going to get check out now because it's got worse last few weeks, but I think losing weight will solve the problem pretty much. I've never been offered surgery.

I Have been dealing with these problems also. I feel like my stomach and other organs are pushing up and out of my chest. i have been trying to exercise but get out of breath. I use to run 8-10 miles a day. I have been to a gastro Dr and they gave me medication that has done nothing. I look as if I am 8 months pregnant. I eat very small meals because anything I eat, I pay for later. I can barely sit without it feeling like everything s pushing its way up through my ribs. I can not live like this. is surgery the answer or do i try a chiro? Anyone who has had the surgery please help.

I have a small hiatal hernia. I get the breathlessness, nausea, bloating, extremely loud hiccups and a right hand side pain issue if I bend over too soon after eating. I also had a gastric bypass 11 years ago which cured my severe & chronic GERD.

Everything thing I have read is.lifting is not good and I don't know what to do about my job and to tell my boss when dr. didn't seem concerned about it

I am 34 and had a heart attack in April. I had a stent put in. Since then I have been to the ER multiple times due to a feeling of pressure and pain in my chest, sometimes even experiencing pain in my left arm. Now I will be the first to admit that I am VERY paranoid right now about chest pains, but they are real and not just me being nervous/scared/paranoid etc. Has anyone else ever had this issue of heart attack and then a hernia? I do belch a lot and am bloated. I recognize that my pain is not the same as when I had my HA, but it is in the same area and that scares me! The ER people seem to think I am crazy. They only ever check my heart, nothing else, so I wouldn't know if it is a hernia or not. I am going to ask my primary about it asap. I would just love some reassurances from anyone who has had an HA and this as well.

Can a hiatal hernia cause swallowing of air causing extreme bloating with lots of air in your intestines? Can it also cause sinus infection plugging ears from gerd with lots of mucus in throat

I have been having terrible pains since May of this year. Terrible tightness, pressure ,cramping in the left side of my chest. A stress test showed I had diastolic dysfunction stage one so I am on blood pressure meds now but I also have this hiatal hernia. The heart doctor said I am not having a heart attack and o see him in one year so I asked him How am I supposed to live with all this pain. And he didn't have an answer.

That's weird, I've been unusually angry and irritable for the last year or so, along with frequent urination on some days. The doctor said I only had a small hiatal hernia, but it feels terrible. Obviously I don't need to worry about menopause, so I wonder if the hernia screws with our metabolisms? Does anyone's hands tingle a lot too?
. My hands tingle when I have an attack, all the way to my throat pressure for 10 'ins then bloats up and like goes down , and then the gas starts thought at first it was an intestinal infection because it came on in one day never had SSS before not even heartburn

I was diagnosed in 2012 with a hiatal hernia after exteme bloating shortness of breath and chest pain. At first I thought it was a heat problem and had a stress test and a heart cath done and it was fine. I then went to see a Gastroenterologist and told him my symptoms and also told him I have had H-pylori recurring for years. Anyway got diagnosed with the hh but 3 days later after I had been suffering with it for maybe 3 weeks all symptoms disappeared. They reoccur every once in a while but recently about a week ago they came back but worse than before. The chest pains are constant and the shortness of breath as well. They came out of nowhere! I was concerned it was something else because I recently had ankle surgery and also was on a 16 hour car trip so the doctors wanted to make sure it was not a pulmonary embolism, but all my tests came back normal, but I still have chest pain and shortness of breath and intemittent bloating. I am at a loss. Can this too be that damn hiatal hernia?
