I remember this policy being like this when I was a kid, having to make up classes in summer school.

Why is this suddenly news now?

Boo hoo. Why did he fail the class during the school year anyway? I hope he learned a lesson.

The student should attend the rest of the sessions anyway, regardless if he'll get credit or not. He shouldn't waste this learning opportunity, especially since it's already paid for. I hope his parents see the bigger picture and encourage him to do that.

This is kinda ridiculous..I mean if the kid was sick he was sick with a doctor's note..what about during the regular school year when these kids don't show up for school,do they do the same? There would be a lot of job openings in the real world if you called in sick for a couple of days returned with a doctor's slip and got fired..swine flu or not the boy evidently was ILL

Sounds to me like the whining Daddy may be the problem in this young man's life. Son, be responsibloe for your life, don't allow others to control your destiny! Learn the rules of what you are doing, depending on your daddy aint good enough!

He missed the equivalent of 4 weeks of school if it were the regular school year. If you're out that long, you should fail.

Why is this news? These have been the summer school rules for untold years. My kids are in their late 30's and it was in place when they were in school.

sounds like Randall Miura can be held liable for criminal endangerment for maintaining a policy that requires sick students to attend school, thus endangering other students and then the risk to elders at home or infant syblings more at risk from flu and other illness. Also when a school district policy differs from state and federal health quidelines they should loose all federal and state funding.

Many people never had kids attend summer school, so they may not be aware of the policy. Plus, this is a time of whining and lawsuits, as evidenced by the post by Alex of IL, who BTW doesn't know how to spell "lose".

The school tells the kids to say home.
Do not come to school and then promptly kicks them out and keeps the $200.00

Next time have the kid go to school even though they have swine flu. That would fix them.

Stupid, stupid.

attendance is more critical than a childs health, Miura you are an idiot! no parent should let thier child go to school with the flu! Typical State DOE mentality

Summer school is not a requirement. It is an opportunity to do the work one failed to do during the regular school year. It is a priviledge to be given a second opportunity at a reasonable price. Stuff happens, he couldn't fulfill his end of the requirement, the reason is irrelevant, he had his opportunity to suceed,(two in fact) and now an unfortunate event (becoming ill) should teach him to grab opportunities the first time they are given.

Is the parent trying to gain sympathy from the public because the kid failed the course during the regular year? Had this been a case of a kid trying to take classes to get ahead, I don't think the newspaper would have been notified.

Wrong focus! It should be on whether he learned what he was supposed to have learned. Did he pass the tests and final exam?

I am so glad my kids don't go to school in Hawaii. They make up things as they go along. Only two excusable reasons. 1 kids gotta go to court and 2 the swine flu. Swine flu wasn't around 30 yrs ago so I guess we change the rules when we feel like it. I don't feel sorry for that family what I feel sorry about is no one should be denied an education but again that is Hawaii what can you say. People is never happy there. Whether it is good or bad always going to have people complaining.

You fail to see the forest through the trees. It is about sending a sick child with the flu, to school. Would it have been better to infect the entire class so the all were kicked out??

I understand him being dismissed, because it is very difficult to catch up in summer school. But, Give him his money back! For a couple hundred more dollars he can go to a private summer school and actually learn something. They're used to collecting tuition, and realize that your entitled to the education you are paying for.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Leo

Perhaps it's the fact that it's Christmas Eve and everyone is busy, but you can't help feeling that you're walking on eggshells around certain people. Their emotions are very close to the surface and could erupt at a moment's notice, perhaps in a storm of tears or a fit of pique. Calm them down and ask if you can do anything to help.
