First Success Reported Of Targeted Therapy In Most Common Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
A new study by an international team of investigators led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists is the first to demonstrate that chemotherapy and a new, targeted therapy work better in combination than chemotherapy alone in treating patients with the most common genetic subtype of lung cancer.

Patients with NSCLC with KRAS mutations have no effective empirical treatment strategy for the "individual." Previous clinical trials have found out that targeted drugs were more active when combined with traditional lung cancer treatments and other investigational targeted therapies that target a MEK inhibitor or a PI3K/mTOR inhibitor, etc.
One approach to this problem is to functionally target "multiple" pathways in a cancer cell. Another challenge is to identify which of the targeted treatments will be effective (enzyme inhibitors, proteasome inhibitors, angiogenesis inhibitors, and monoclonal antibodies).
It's going to require multiple drugs administered in combination targeted to abnormal patterns of cellular machinery that effect or reflect malignant behavior, to have any true effect. The solution is "combination" therapy to attack all the different targets there are (or at least they know there are). The "target" is the set of all malignant cells that could evolve.
