I don't think hair loss is harmful for your health, sure for a woman can be a terrific aesthetic problem, therefore also psychological.
If can be helpful, the main treatments are:
minoxidil at various strength and anti-androgenic medicines (in the most cases)
For light hair loss (in women) are enough some advices:

After 1 month of using Propecia from http://goo.gl/F0Fp22 , I noticed a decrease in the loss of hair after a shower. Now in my 4th month of use, there is a notable difference in the thickness of my hair, and some growth noted!
